The Phoenix Suns have assigned rookie power forward Gani Lawal to the NBA D-League's Iowa Energy, the team announced today. This news may come as a bit of a surprise considering yesterday's announcement that Suns' starting big man Robin Lopez will miss several weeks with a knee injury, though the Suns plan to start Channing Frye at center and will sign former D-Leaguer center Earl Barron to bolster the front court while Lopez is out.
The 6-foot-9 Lawal was selected by the Suns with the 46th overall pick in this year's draft, though at one point he was considered a potential late first-round selection when he decided to withdraw his name from the 2009 NBA Draft. That didn't happen, in part due to sharing Georgia Tech's frontcourt with Derrick Favors, who was selected 43 spots ahead of Lawal by the New Jersey Nets.
