Hennessey Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca

Having a drag strip behind your office would be both a wonderful play thing and an unyielding distraction. Hennessey Performance Design has such a delightful strip of attention-destroying asphalt at its disposal, and it uses this quarter-mile test track to examine the straight-line acceleration of its latest products. The most recent vehicle to run down this stretch is the Hennessey-tuned Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca.

According to Hennessey, the supercharged engine of this Boss 302 pumps out 650 horsepower. That's enough scoot to push the car from 0-60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds, and on down the strip in 11.9 seconds with a trap speed of 124 miles per hour.

It's fast, it's loud and it's captured on video. Click past the jump for the clip.

Abarth 500 Cabrio Italia

The second special edition model Abarth will be unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show is called the 500 Cabrio Italia. No, this new model isn’t a tribute to the Ferrari 458 Italia, but it is a model that was specifically built to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italian unity. There will only be 150 units built, appropriately so, each will feature a special chrome "500 Cabrio Italia" plate with satin effect.

The 500Cabrio Italia is painted in a special Blu Abu Dhabi livery combined with an electrically operated black top and tinted rear windows. Adding a touch of class and sparkle are the 10-spoke 17" rims with diamond effect combined with yellow Brembo front calipers.

Along with the celebratory additions to the exterior of the vehicle, Abarth has also supplied the special edition with a number of components that set it apart from the rest. For starters, the "esseesse" brake system consisting of perforated self-ventilated front brake discs and fixed four-piston calipers has been added, as well as Xenon headlights with dipped and main beam functions.

Sliding into the vehicle, the driver will notice "Abarth Corsa by Sabelt" seats in natural leather with carbon fiber backrests. Once comfortably seated, the driver can wrap their hands around the black leather steering wheel with double stitching and take advantage of the Alutex aluminum glass fiber pedals and gear lever knob. There is also a carbon fiber running board with dedicated "Cabrio Italia" graphics finishing off the aesthetic improvements. On a technological note, the Abarth 500 Cabrio Italia boasts of an Abarth Blue&MeTM MAP satellite navigation unit with a telemetric function developed in conjunction with Magneti Marelli.

Running the 500C Italia is a 1.4 Turbo T-Jet engine that delivers an impressive - for this class - 160 HP. This power will allow the 500 Cabrio Italia to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds, while top speed sticks at 131 mph.

Lamborghini Murcielago SV by DMC

Now that the Aventador has up and replaced Lamborghini’s steadfast seller - the Murcielago - tuners are now sharpening their fangs and sinking them into projects for the gone but not forgotten model. For those that liked SR Auto Group’s rendition of the Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce, but failed to have an SV model waiting for the transformation, meet Lamborghini-tuning extraordinaire, DMC. This German tuner has created an upgrade package for the Lamborghini Murcielago that converts the standard supercar to the top of the line Super Veloce model.

The package starts off with the usual array of exterior modifications, including new bumpers, an integrated rear diffuser, and a large rear wing, all of which are made of carbon fiber. Topping off the exterior look is a new set of wheels and more carbon fiber goodies for the interior.

Not one to leave well enough alone, DMC pumped up the supercar’s V12 engine from an output of 572 HP to 600 HP and 353 lb-ft of torque to 365 lb-ft. Not exactly the 670 HP and 490 lb-ft of torque found in the actual SuperVeloce model, but we’re sure customers will take what they can get. That added grunt was provided with an ECU remap and the DMC stainless sports rear silencer and sport metallic catalytic converter bring forth a sportier sound.

Official: BMW begins testing autonomous car tech on highways

bmw autonomous test drive

Automakers are always looking to push the boundaries with experimental technology, but BMW seems to be ahead of the curve with respect to autonomous vehicles. Previously, BMW was sticking to closed circuits to show off its TrackTrainer. Now, however, the German automaker is venturing out on to public roads, and it's doing so with an automated 5 Series fitted with advanced ConnectedDrive technology.

The system is enabled with a push of a button, once a driver has reached a highway. After it's allowed to work its technical sorcery, the ConnectedDrive system takes over acceleration and braking duty. If the system detects a slower moving vehicle in front, and no vehicles to the side, it's capable of passing said traffic.

BMW is hard at work teaching its prototype how to deal with more traffic situations, such as construction sites and intersections. As the system continues to learn, it will only get better at making sure you're non longer needed. Click past the jump to learn more about this autonomous BMW prototype, and be sure to get a closer look by clicking through the gallery.

Spy Shots: 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe shows its new face, interior

We recently stumbled upon some grainy photos of what appeared to be a completely uncovered 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, showing off its new Veloster-inspired nose. Now, our intrepid spy photographers have caught a pair of Genesis Coupes out testing in the Death Valley heat, showing off the brand new nose.

These prototypes appear to either be the top-trim Track model or the hardcore R-Spec, featuring large, 19-inch wheels and a set of Brembo brakes. We've also managed to get our first glimpse at the coupe's revised interior, though from the looks of things, not a whole lot has changed (we'll wait until we see a console shot before drawing conclusions, though).

As for what's under the hood, a safe bet is that the coupe will get the revised, direct-injected 3.8-liter V6 from the Genesis Sedan, producing 333 horsepower. Of course, we're all crossing our fingers that Hyundai has found a way to shoehorn its new 429-hp 5.0-liter V8 under the two-door's sleek hood.

The 2013 Genesis Coupe is expected to debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January. Stay tuned for more details.

All the ingredients are there for Connecticut

The Connecticut Huskies were in a pretty good shape before landing Andre Drummond, but now the defending national champs are easily among the upper echelon of the vaunted Big East. If the NBA's collective bargaining agreement makes college students stay longer than the current one year before entering the NBA, Drummond will make the Huskies relevant for years to come.

In Drummond, Jim Calhoun has scored one of the most dominating big men in high school basketball. He will bring NBA size, great length with the ability to rebound and block shots to go along with a developing offensive game.

What is so impressive for this big man is how he can pass the ball in a high-low setting or with his back to the basket. Plus, he can defend in the low or high post, while protecting the rim, which will help the Huskies' defensive field-goal percentage.

Calhoun will be able to play a monster lineup with Drummond and Alex Oriakhi down low and possibly move Oriakhi over to his natural position of power forward. With Roscoe Smith and DeAndre Daniels at small forward, Jeremy Lamb at shooting guard and explosive freshman Ryan Boatright, the Huskies' lineup is looking hard to beat.

All that remains to be seen is how fast the freshmen pick up the intensity and sustain it, because all the talent is there for another run at a national title.

2012 porsche 911

The 2012 Porsche 911 has made it's virtual world debut by way of spec sheets, pricing information and still photography, and now, there's video. Porsche has pulled back the wraps on its latest two-door icon, and this video will most likely be the first of many showing off the iconic coupe. There's not much to say about this first official video, however, as it's light on any details other than ones designed to attack your senses.

Visual and aural delights are waiting just after the jump.

The clip will have to do until we can get up close and personal with the car when it hits the stage at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Until then, check out the video and the image gallery.

James Bond's Cars graphic

James Bond and Aston Martin go together like a tuxedo and a license to kill, but everyone's favorite international man of mystery has been behind the wheel of more than just British sports cars during his long and sordid career. The good people at CarBuzz have worked up a lengthy infographic detailing the long history of British Intelligence vehicles piloted by none other than 007. Bond has even held the keys to a Ford LTD on at least two occasions in what could only be a practical joke from Q. He's also helmed such classy rides as a Lincoln Mark VII and an Audi 200 Avant.

That was long before Pierce Brosnan sent a BMW Z8 to its grave or Daniel Craig skipped an Aston Martin DBS V12 off its roof. Of course, as the graphic points out, these are just the cars that 007 has driven over the years. The spy has also commanded a couple of tanks, at least one bus, six helicopters and 20 boats or submarines. Hit the jump to check out the full graphic for yourself.

Report: Chrysler 200 sedan staying home, only convertible going to Europe

chrysler 200 convertible

Fiat is getting ready to stick For Sale signs on the Chrysler 200 in the European market. However, it seems only the 200 Convertible will be making the trip across the pond, where it will wear Lancia Flavia badging.

Why is the sedan stuck stateside? Fiat executives find it too costly to add a diesel option, and feel the 200 sedan won't sell well without an oil-burning powerplant under the hood. The convertible, however, is viewed as an attractive offering (in a manner of speaking) despite the gas-only powerplant.

Good news, American business travelers - you can now rent yourself a droptop Sebring 2.0 while jet-setting in Europe, too.

Traffic tickets delay Artest name change (AP)

Ron Artest's bid to become Metta World Peace has been delayed. A Los Angeles court commissioner delayed ruling on a name change petition by the Lakers forward until Sept. 16. Superior Court spokeswoman Elizabeth Martinez says the court cited Artest's outstanding traffic warrants as the reason for the delay.

First Cup: Thursday

  • Mike Wise of The Washington Post: "If Kevin Garnett’s contract was the flashpoint of the 1999 lockout — his $126 million dwarfed the $85 million paid years earlier for the entire Minnesota franchise, thus making it hard for a small-market team like the Timberwolves to put enough help around a star to contend — the salary of a player believed to be a dud is at the heart of this dispute. Owners are sick of paying premiums for damaged goods. Players are putting the onus on the people who signed them to those deals, irrespective of who turned out to be a lousy employee. Nowhere was the impetus for a long labor stoppage more obvious than here in Washington, where what was once thought to be a blockbuster deal — Gilbert Arenas for Rashard Lewis this past December — was in reality one franchise’s lemon traded for another. Only in the NBA can a town be excited by moving a player with three years and $60 million left (Arenas) for another with more than two years remaining on a $118 million deal. Why were the Wizards ecstatic? Because as bad as Lewis’s $19 million-plus deal per year was for a player with declining numbers the past three seasons, at least they only had to have his contract around for two years instead of three. That’s sadly called success before the trading deadline. Beyond finding a more equitable split of income, stale contracts are why the union and the league may not come to terms this fall and perhaps beyond."
  • Mike Wells of The Indianapolis Star: "Q: Everybody knows Donnie Walsh as a nonstop worker. Do you have any hobbies that will keep you occupied? A: I know it's hard to believe, but I enjoy doing nothing. I think I can do that better than anybody. I read books. I do crossword puzzles. But I don't have a real answer on how this will go because I've never really done it before. ... Q: Will you officially retire once you finish the season with the Knicks? A: I'm never going to say I won't do it anymore, I'm not going to do that. There have been too many people who tell me I'm going to miss it, so I'm going to keep options open. The day I say that's it will be the day I say that's it for real. Like when I left New York, I never said, 'I'll never do this again.' I don't see any reason why you would say (you're retiring). Q: Larry's future as president is murky. Any chance of you returning to the Pacers in some capacity? A: I didn't come back here for that. I don't really want to get involved in it because I brought Larry here, I brought a lot of people here and they have a good opportunity to be successful. I don't want to be in the middle of all that. I haven't talked to anybody about it. I won't talk to anybody about it. They're my friends and I really haven't given that a lot of thought since I'm a consultant for the Knicks for this year."
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: "It has been Bryan Colangelo’s intention to make a major front office move since losing Masai Ujiri to the Denver Nuggets. The question was, who to hire and what title and responsibilities to give him? Colangelo isn’t so much caught up in titles as he is in who does what. If he’s president but no longer general manager in the future, no big deal. If he’s the president and GM and someone else holds another decision-making title, no big deal. His bottom line is finding an experienced NBA executive, someone who might have been a GM elsewhere, someone who might be ready to be a GM somewhere else, someone who can add to a front office that Colangelo believes needs to be enhanced. This is not unlike what Mike Babcock did in Detroit with the Red Wings coaching staff: He wanted to change his staff to hear new ideas and fresh ideas. Colangelo wants to do the same for his front office."
  • Mary Schmitt Boyer of The Plain Dealer: "In spite of reports to the contrary all over the Internet recently, the Cavaliers have not yet officially discussed retiring former center Zydrunas Ilgauskas' No. 11. While it is certain that will happen at some point in the future - after all, the much-loved Ilgauskas is the team's all-time leader in games played and rebounds, among other things - the team has not decided to do so yet. Because of the lockout, the Cavs cannot comment on the situation now, but at the time of the NBA draft, sources said the subject came up as rookie Kyrie Irving was deciding which number to wear in Cleveland. Irving, the former Duke star who was taken with the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft last June, wore No. 1 for the Blue Devils, but Daniel Gibson already wears that number in Cleveland. Irving asked about No. 11 because that number was retired by Boston University in 1988 in honor of his father, Drederick, who was at one time the school's all-time leading scorer. But it was suggested to Irving (who held up a No. 15 jersey during his introductory press conference in Cleveland) that No. 11 could be a number that might eventually be retired by the team. He was told it was so closely tied to Ilgauskas in Cleveland that he might want to select another number that he could make his own. Eventually, Irving decided on No. 2."
  • Brian T. Smith of The Salt Lake Tribune: "Jazz small forward C.J. Miles is backing up his words. Miles entered the offseason by declaring that this was the most important summer of his career. The Jazz picked up Miles' $3.7 million team option June 29, and the sixth-year player has responded by significantly slimming down through constant workouts. Miles, 24, averaged career highs last year in points (12.8), rebounds (3.3) and minutes (25.2). His production dropped off during April, though, as he struggled with his shot and place on the team under first-year head coach Tyrone Corbin. The 6-foot-6 Miles played with a recorded weight of 232 pounds last season. However, he appears to have lost a considerable amount of weight as he enters what could be his final year under contract with the Jazz. Miles has spent part of his summer running the court with Utah forward Paul Millsap and former Jazz guard Ronnie Price."
  • Tom Griffin of the San Antonio Express-News: "LeBron James admits to some vanity. Take his receding hairline which he tweeted was the subject of a recent dream. 'Had a dream my hairline was back!,' James tweeted. 'Woke up and went to bathroom, turned on light slowly. Same ol story. Damn! Lol #wishfulthinking.' Of course, James could use some Rogaine to take care of that problem during the lockout. Or he could shave his head and come back with a glowering look once he starts playing basketball again with the Miami Heat. Considering all of the money he has riding on it, the Rogaine would be the best career choice for him. There might even be a commercial in it for him."
  • Michael Lee of The Washington Post: "So far, the offseason hasn’t really been much different for Javale McGee since he continues his same workout routine of dunking on random people at an open gym at HAX Athletic Club in Los Angeles, lifting, riding his bike and boxing, as he did last summer. McGee has had the opportunity to travel abroad, with his trip to the Philippines followed by a tour through China earlier this month with his shoe company, Peak. 'It really hasn’t been that bad, because we wouldn’t be in training camp yet, so I feel like if the lockout is still going on when we’re still going to training camp, that’s when we’ll feel it,' he said. McGee sat in for the regional players’ union meeting last week in Los Angeles, where about 70 players showed up to get an update on the labor situation from union head Billy Hunter. Despite the speculation that the lockout could wipe out an entire season, McGee said he feels both sides will reach an agreement. 'I’m optimistic, just for the fact that I don’t think the owners want to lose all that money. Because it’s a lot of money and last year was a great season money wise. I don’t think they want to lose the money of an upcoming season.' "
  • Kevin Ding of The Orange County Register: "Lakers fans have greater fondness for their end-of-the-bench folk heroes because of how often they’ve gotten to see them in blowouts in recent successful seasons, and right up among the leaders is DJ Mbenga. Mbenga was let go by the Lakers before last season — although he picked up two NBA championships before that — and landed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Hornets, although only a little in the Hornets’ first-round series against the Lakers. Mbenga’s downward spiral (not that he was ever that upward) has continued with word of his release from the Belgian national team with little big-time pro talent. Writer Wendell Maxey saw him play Saturday and described his go-to moves as 'turnovers and missed layups.' At age 30, 'Congo Cash' looks like he’s cashed out."
  • Justin Terranova of the New York Post: "Spero Dedes was named the new radio play-by-play man for the Knicks in early August, but an alleged Hamptons’ DWI arrest in the early morning of July 4 put that hire on hold. 'I take full responsibility. It was a 48-hour period where there was a lot of uneasiness,' said Dedes, who will also back up Mike Breen on the MSG Network. 'I’m coming to New York, I’m coming to an organization. These people don’t know me, they don’t know my character and I just felt bad this was my first impression with my new employer. That’s the last thing I want to do,' Dedes said.'One of the reasons I’ve been so lucky to get the opportunities I’ve gotten is because I’ve not made mistakes like that. It’s all on my shoulders.' Dedes, who was raised in Paramus and is a Fordham graduate, is coming to the Knicks after spending six seasons of doing radio play-by-play for the Lakers."
  • John Reid of The Times-Picayune: "The Hornets continue to strengthen their base of corporate support, as Chevron agreed Wednesday to become the franchise’s fifth major Crescent City Champions sponsor. Entergy, the lone Fortune 500 company in the metro area, agreed last week to join Cox Communications, 7-UP and Ochsner Health System as Crescent City Champions sponsors. With the new sponsorship deals, Hornets President Hugh Weber said they are $4 million ahead of where they were at the same time last year. It’s the most Crescent City Champions sponsors the Hornets have signed up since the exclusive sponsorship program was established in 2007."

Saint Louis dodges bullet on serious injury

Saint Louis guard Kwamain Mitchell's 2010-11 season was a lost one. Legal issues landed him in hot water with the school, and after being readmitted and serving a suspension, it became so late in the year that he simply redshirted. The Billikens went on to win only 12 games without their leading scorer.

So it was with a sigh of relief that the back injury Mitchell suffered on Friday did not appear to be a serious one after he fell backward into metal bleachers. He spent Friday night in a hospital in Ottawa and the exhibition game against Carleton University was called off with 3:13 left. Doctors found no structural or bone damage on Mitchell, who was scheduled to fly back from the preseason tour of Canada with the team on Sunday.

Mitchell, who as a sophomore led the Billikens by averaging 15.9 points, figures to be an important part of a team that hopes to improve on its tied-for-10th finish in the A-10.

Saint Louis will have a chance to make some noise in the 76 Classic, going up against Boston College in the first round. The Billikens will also play at New Mexico to start a home-and-home series, giving coach Rick Majerus an opportunity to go back to The Pit.

Majerus also had his own health issue before the trip when he underwent a heart procedure, but seemed to be having a good time in Canada.

"I love Canadians," he told Western Ontario's team website. "They're so friendly. Since I've been here, I've always been asked 'what can we do for you? Can I get you anything?' That's why I always love coming to Canada."

Aside from the injury, Mitchell enjoyed himself, along with the rest of the team as can been seen after he was handed a flip cam to document the trip.

Official: Audi Urban Concept rendered

Audi didn't release any additional information the on the Audi Urban Concept today, but it did let loose a photo rendering album of the e-tron-branded concept in coupe and roadster forms that we'll soon get to know in Frankfurt. Powered by two electric motors, the driver and passenger will get to their staggered seating positions through the tailgate, and can let the sun shine in through the sliding canopy once there if they're in the coupe.

We look forward to finding out if all this is as funky in person as it is in print. Until then, there's that bunch of photos to check out in the high-res gallery.

Officials from the league and players' association will meet again next week, people with knowledge of the plans told The Associated Press on Thursday. It will be only the second session involving leaders from both sides since the lockout started July 1.

Luke Walton eager to test coaching chops

Luke Walton's decision to become an assistant coach at Memphis was one of the more intriguing -- albeit minor -- NBA and college stories of the offseason. Walton is mired in an NBA lockout, so he can't fully dedicate himself to coaching. But he also can't do much else.

To me, being a millionaire who lives in Los Angeles and spends his lockout time "not doing much else" sounds rather awesome. Think of the leisure activities one could pursue. (In the words of Brendan Huff, "so many activities!") On Thursday, Walton admitted that he considered the luxurious possibilities of doing nothing, but ultimately decided that the Memphis gig was a perfect opportunity to get a feel for coaching and decide whether the profession was worth pursuing once his playing days are over. And he even got advice from one of -- if not the -- greatest coaches of all time. From Fox Sports Radio:
"That’s part of the reason I took it, just to kind of get a feel for it. Obviously I made some phone calls to some people before I said yes to get there advice on it. Most everyone, including my old coach, Phil Jackson, thought it was a great opportunity for me and something I should do just for that reason, to find out maybe I hate sitting in gyms blowing whistles for three hours a day when I could be down in Manhattan Beach. But maybe I’ll love it.”

If Phil Jackson tells you he thinks coaching is a great opportunity, I'm sorry, but you take the man's advice. It's funny: Walton sounds like a college kid who isn't sure he wants to travel abroad, but figured he might as well while he has the chance. If it goes well, great. If not, no harm done. Maybe this isn't the ideal situation for Memphis fans -- and Walton could still be pulled away at any time if the lockout ends -- but compared to Josh Pastner's original plan of rolling with just two assistants, it's a great fit for everyone involved.

What exactly will Walton do? He explained that he would be in charge of the big men, while fellow assistant coaches Damon Stoudamire and Jack Murphy would handle the guards and wings, respectively. And if his players don't listen?
“Damon and I might have to play some two-on-two just in case the kids get out of line.”

Dear Memphis communications staff: If this ever happens, video needs to hit the Internet immediately. Signed, everyone. Thanks.

Video: MotorWeek recalls the genesis of affordable Japanese luxury cars

Lexus ES250

Today, Japanese automakers have an iron grip on the affordable luxury segment, but it wasn't always so. All it takes is a quick look through the MotorWeek archives to recall that there was a time when most consumers didn't realize that Lexus and Infiniti offered cars positioned below the LS 400 and Q45 that coddled without breaking the bank. In 1990, MotorWeek compared the then-new ES 250 and M30. With 0-60 mph figures in the 10-second range and host of push-button controls, both vehicles offer a trip down memory lane.

The clip also demonstrates how far we've come since then, considering that a number of compacts now offer more refinement and better performance than these luxo-dinosaurs did 21 years ago. Hit the jump to watch the video for yourselves.

Teased: Lexus teases GS F-Sport and GS 450h

Lexus GS F Sport teaser

Lexus may have debuted the 2012 GS 350 as part of last week's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance festivities in California, but the automaker isn't quite done with the rollout of its new rear-wheel-drive sedan. Seen here, Lexus has just released two teasers of two more models in the GS range: the sportier looking F Sport and hybrid-enhanced GS 450h.

Like the rest of Lexus' F-Sport treatments, we don't expect the GS F-Sport to be much more than a trim-and-tape job, though some suspension tuning may be in store for this model. It's been long rumored that Lexus is preparing an honest-to-goodness GS F performance model, so the F Sport trim ought to be similar to what the automaker offers on its smaller IS sedan.

The GS 450h will likely use the same 3.5-liter V6 and electric motor setup that's found in the current car, though some small massaging should hopefully improve fuel economy ever so slightly. We'll have the full details on both cars later this year.

Casper Ware captures MVPs, NBA attention

Long Beach State has reached the championship game of the Big West tournament for the past two seasons. They lost both times and fell short of the NCAA tournament. Still, Casper Ware isn't looking back.

"I can't cry about it or be sad about it," said Ware, who will get one final shot at reaching the NCAA tournament as a senior. "I just have to use it as motivation.

"It's a whole new season. Our goal is to get to that final game and win it."

So the reigning Big West player of the year set out this summer and showed off his game after a season in which he averaged 17.2 points. That has resulted in another MVP award at the Drew League, where he consistently put up 30-point games.

Summer league basketball is just that, as coach Dan Monson cautioned. It's also a good sign that Ware has done it alongside some top NBA players and gotten their attention, according to Gazette Newspapers.
He dropped 43 points on a team that featured NBA ballers DeMar DeRozan, Ron Artest and Steve Blake. He scored 33 points while playing on a team with LeBron James, impressing James so much that the NBA MVP asked Ware to teach at his camp the next weekend. He played against or alongside Kevin Durant, Michael Beasley, Austin Daye, and more, consistently flummoxing top-tier talents and drawing praise from Twitter feeds to asphalt arguments.

Two weeks ago, the respect he's garnered took an interesting form, when he brought DeRozan, the Thunder's James Harden, and 2010 number one draft pick John Wall into the Pyramid to play hoop during an Open Gym session. Ware said it was good for him and his teammates to get a look at how the best in the world play, and didn't mind hearing that video of All-Stars in the Pyramid may one day help the school's recruiting cause.

That's certainly some pretty good company, and if it gives Ware confidence going into the season, it's great for a Long Beach State team looking to get over the hump.

Casspi eyes Tony Parker's French team

The San Antonio Spurs would undoubtedly prefer to see them playing together in South Texas, but the prospect of Tony Parker and longtime Spurs favorite Omri Casspi teaming up in France is very much alive.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Monday that Casspi is giving strong consideration to signing with ASVEL in France's top division.

That's the same ASVEL club which claims Parker as a co-owner and as its vice president of basketball operations.

It initially appeared that Casspi -- after being dealt from Sacramento to Cleveland on June 30 in the final trade consummated in the NBA before the start of the July 1 lockout -- was a lock to play for perennial Euroleague power Maccabi Tel-Aviv in his native Israel in the event of the lockout bleeding into November or December.

But David Pick of Eurobasket.com reported earlier Monday that Casspi and Maccabi officials, after a sitdown, have mutually agreed that they would not be able to reach contract terms that both sides can stomach.

France isn't the only destination that Casspi -- coveted by the Spurs since he was drafted No. 23 overall by the Kings in 2009 -- is considering as a lockout alternative. Various reports in the Israeli media say he's drawn interest from clubs in Russia and Spain.
But ASVEL, situatated in the Lyon suburb of Villeurbanne, does have one clear advantage: Casspi and Parker share the same agent. They're both represented by CAA's Steven Heumann.

Last week in London on duty with the French national team, Parker told ESPN.com contributor Ian Whittell that he will play in his native France if he plays anywhere other than the NBA this season as opposed to seizing upon the interest Parker has generated from teams in China.

"My agent talked about China a little bit," Parker told Whittell. "... I'm not going to take any decision until the end of September, after the European Championships. I want to see if I'm healthy, if I'm hurt and by then we will also know a lot more what is happening with the situation of the lockout.

"If I play [abroad], I will definitely play in France, for my fans, for my team ASVEL."

As for the prospect of Casspi ultimately winding up alongside Parker in the French League, one source close to the situation said it really "might happen."

Casspi is currently nursing a injured left knee that threatens to knock him out of the European Championships (EuroBasket) later this month in Lithuania. Israel's only NBA player told reporters over the weekend that "right now my leg is in a bad state."
