The new NBA draft deadline is ridiculous

Forget the even-handed headline. Discard the soft language. Neglect the subtle caveats.

Let's just call a spade a spade: The NCAA's decision to further shorten the NBA draft early-entry deadline is one of the silliest, most cynical and least student-athlete-friendly decisions ever.

Last year, the NCAA shrunk the early-entry deadline to May 8. That shortened the time of those players testing the NBA draft waters -- you know, trying to figure out their professional futures -- by 40 days. Why? Because the ACC's coaches were frustrated by the oh-so-difficult task of recruiting players in the spring signing period without knowing which current players would ultimately leave school. They came up with the plan, voted on it, agreed it was just a dandy idea, emailed it over to the NCAA and voila! Done deal.

A year later, here we are again. The ACC's coaches drafted a new proposal, one that moves the early-entry deadline all the way up to the day before the beginning of the spring signing period. In 2011, that date -- April 12 -- would have passed us by weeks ago. It would have given underclassman prospects exactly eight days after the national title game to decide whether they wanted to go pro or stay in school for another year. It would have -- I mean, it will; I'm still having trouble with the idea that this is actually happening -- forced players with millions of dollars on the line tomake life-altering decisions in the matter of a few days with minimal information on which to make them.

Under this rule, there's no "testing the waters." There's no information gathering. There's only the choice. Make it or don't. Stay or leave. Dive in or stay on the shore. And good luck with whatever is in that water when you get wet.

Consider how the typical college student goes about turning his collegiate experience into a profession. She gets to take internships. She gets to make contacts. She gets to interview anywhere and everywhere that is interested in interviewing her. She visits those offices, gets familiar with her future co-workers, learns what she can about the relevant cities. If she's lucky, she gets an offer or two and she has weeks, even months, to decide which option is best.

Now imagine if that same student was legally disallowed from talking to anyone associated with her profession for the entirety of her four years in school. Then, eight days after graduation -- big day, family's in town, bring the camera -- she is told that she may or may not have a chance to get a job, but she doesn't get to know where. She doesn't know how much money she'll make. She doesn't know what city she'll live in. She doesn't even know if she'll actually get a job. Oh, and one more thing: If she leaves school but doesn't get a job in her chosen profession, she's not allowed to go back to school and buttress her academic credentials. But hey: There's always jobs in Europe!

That's an imperfect analogy, but you get the idea. See how utterly ridiculous this is? How antithetical to the mission of college athletics it seems?

And why is the NCAA doing this? What's the grand reason for this massive change? So college basketball coaches -- those poor, bereft, designer suit-clad millionaires -- can know without any uncertainty whether they need to sign another recruit in the spring.

I hate being the outraged, angry sportswriter. I hate it. I also hate the reflexive anti-NCAA tone that most fans tend to take anytime the NCAA does anything even slightly inconsistent or questionable. But come on, guys. Not only did you allow this rule to pass, but you released the news in an indirect one-sentence announcement at the end of an otherwise unrelated press release. That release is here. The sentence reads as follows:

"Additionally, all legislation adopted by the Legislative Council earlier this month is now considered adopted."

Oh, OK! Good to know!

Come on, NCAA: At this point, you're asking for it. And you deserve everybit.

The only worthwhile caveats here -- OK, so you can stop ignoring them now -- are as follows:

1. This rule might not survive the year. The NCAA could still override the adoption of the rule, bring it to review in January and vote it down. That seems incredibly unlikely, but it's a possibility. (We got it here because the NCAA legislative council approved the measure earlier this month, and the NCAA Board of Directors took no action on it Thursday, which by default makes it a new rule.)

2. Maybe -- maybe -- Bylaw Blog's John Infante is right in saying that the rule could limit the number of players who open themselves up to bad advice in the water-testing process and end up making bad decisions they wouldn't otherwise have made.

You don't need me to tell you that those are some pretty weak caveats.

The bottom line is this: On Thursday, the NCAA adopted a rule devised by and on behalf of coaches. This rule actively hurts its student-athletes' ability to make educated decisions about their professional futures. It forces players into making an all-or-nothing decision based on no more than a week of information about the trajectory of that future.

The draft process is always imperfect. There's no magic bullet. Bad decisions will be made whether players have 100 days or 100 hours to make those decisions. But the NCAA has a responsibility to its student-athletes, who happen to be the reason the NCAA exists. (And, for that matter, earn multibillion-dollar TV contracts for its marquee basketball competition.) By allowing coaches to enact this rule, the NCAA is abdicating its responsibility to the best and brightest of those student-athletes.

Simply put, this is wrong. In so many ways, it's just plain wrong.

Need For Speed gives an early peak at The Run

Need For Speed: The Run Debut Trailer - Click above to watch the video after the jump

If you're getting bored of the racing games that are relegated to the track, the Need For Speed franchise is hoping to grab your attention with The Run. The new game, which doesn't hit stores until November 15, promises to mix hot rides with a healthy dose of drama. The premise is simple: The gamer will need to make their way across the country while bad guys and the law chases them all the while. In other words, its kind of like Smokey and the Bandit meets Fast and Furious, perhaps with a touch of Grand Theft Auto.

Hit the jump to watch the first trailer for the upcoming game. The clip is short and it doesn't reveal much, but we did catch a glimpse of an Audi R8, a Porsche Cayenne, a Mustang and even a Ford Taurus Police Interceptor. That's not a lot to go on, but the post-jump press release says gamers will "blow across borders, weave through dense urban traffic, rocket down icy mountain passes and navigate narrow canyons at breakneck speeds." Sounds like it could be fun.

Friday Bullets

  • Important: not all turnovers have the same impact.
  • Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge. Tall guys who can shoot are, really, really hard to guard.
  • So what if Kyrie Irving may never be an MVP candidate. Some consistently strong play at the point guard position sounds well-worth the top pick in Toronto.
  • Take heart, Nets fans. Deron Williams likes where things are going...on FaceBook, anyways.
  • A bittersweet ending to a college course on the culture of basketball.
  • Outsourcing is affecting everyone. Excel's Jeff Schwartz, who represents Jason Kidd, Paul Pierce and other NBA cash cows, also represents five of this year's top international prospects.
  • Anthony Macri on the Grizzlies' potent front line: "On any post touch Randolph gets now, there is a looping dive from Gasol toward the rim, but outside the lane. A traditional cut here would be directly down the center of the lane, but Gasol moves outside the painted area to both give Randolph more room on his initial move and also to force his defender to define their defensive plan. Most of these types of dives are meant to produce scores, but this is not the primary purpose of Gasol's cut. It's a smart adjustment given the kind of bucket-getter Randolph is."
  • On HoopSpeak, Ethan Sherwood Strauss takes an unlikely position against the league's instant replay rules. Strauss is concerned with the fan experience, one that is not improved by halting for three minutes of standing around to determine what happened in the most exciting moments of the game. Instead of the cathartic release of victory or defeat, we're left with an awkward outro of announcers cautiously narrating short guys looking at a monitor. But I'd bet the players in these tense situations appreciate that their efforts are authentically rewarded. Doug Collins, for one, probably wishes there would have been some replay review rules in place at the 1972 Munich Olympics. A compromise: designate an official to monitor the replays full time and make quick rulings instead of relying on a referee huddle to sort it out at mid court.
  • Even without playing, Rashard Lewis was a major upgrade over Gilbert Arenas.
  • A Storm Trooper gets posterized.
  • Man, John Kuester had a rough year with the Pistons. But at least no one tried to strangle him.
  • Rondo takes it to another level in the playoffs.
  • Not everyone is on board with advanced statistics. After all, the emotion of the game, what really connects with fans, doesn't always come through in PER. Then again, these statistics teach us new ways to appreciate the game. So what's the right way to watch basketball, anyways?
  • These playoffs have been awesome, in no small part because superstars like LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Durant have been as advertised. So why does David Thorpe pick Marc Gasol as his Postseason MVP? A hint: he's outplaying a legend.
  • Josh Smith cracks me up, on purpose!

RallyCross and the X Games were made for one another, and X Games 17 will feature one of the coolest tracks ever. The games, which will run from July 28 through July 31, will include a first-ever rally street circuit in downtown Los Angeles.

Three-time rally gold medalist and Top Gear U.S. host Tanner Foust sounds pretty excited about the development, and we can't blame him. "Being in the car, ripping through streets, cranking the handbrake through intersections while door-to-door and jumping next to buildings is going to be truly epic! I can't wait!"

We're guessing ESPN can't wait either, as the shots from the competition will likely be awe-inspiring. And the sports news network will have the event very well covered, with 25 hours of high definition coverage and another 18 hours of 3D coverage.

And, of course, the X Games wouldn't be the X Games without dirt bikes, so you can expect plenty of Enduro X coverage. There will also be eight new Moto X competitions, which will take place inside The STAPLES Center. Sounds like a good time. Hit the jump to read over the ESPN press release, and check out our high-res image galleries below for some of the rally action from last year.

Carl Edwards Grabs Pole for Phoenix Race

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Phoenix International Raceway is filled with bumps and cracks and has patches on top of patches trying to hold it together for one last race.

It may be falling apart, but one thing it has never lost is speed.

Carl Edwards had the fastest lap on one of the fastest days ever at Phoenix, setting the last in a slew of track records on Saturday during the final qualifying session before the surface undergoes a makeover.

"This track is great," Edwards said. "I talked to (track president Bryan) Sperber earlier and I think the question I asked him seems a lot of people have asked was: 'Why would you even mess with this?"

Raceway officials don't have a lot of choice with the track nearly crumbling.

It's at least going out with flourish.

What do you think about at the line?

Nothing at all.

With a playoff elimination game on the line, Joel Anthony stepped to the stripe. Later the Heat told Kevin Arnovitz what the 64 percent free-throw shooter thought about as he calmly sank two shots, and the Sixers:
"I just try not to think about anything," Anthony said of his routine. "Just focus on the rim, eyes on the rim, catch my breath. Don’t listen to anything. Don't listen to the crowd. Don’t listen to any of the players. After that, just make them. Follow-through the way I’ve been practicing all the time. I practice free throws all the time with Coach Askins before games. Come to the line, got to make one to tie, two to win. Try to put that mental pressure on yourself."

Anthony responded to that pressure by swishing both ends of the pair, giving the Heat a 3-point lead with 16.8 seconds to play.

"I don’t know how many times 'Doc' has probably been in that situation in his basketball career," Dwyane Wade said of Anthony. "I don’t think he knew what situation he was in. The only thing he knows to do is go up there and make two. I don’t even think he really realized the situation and he didn’t overthink it. That’s what happens late in games when you get to the line -- you start thinking too much. I don’t think he thought at all. He just went up there like normal, like, 'OK, I’m going to try to make two.' And he did."

Neal's three saves Spurs from elimination

The San Antonio Spurs have plenty of veteran leaders on their team, but facing elimination in the final seconds of regulation against the Memphis Grizzlies, it was a rookie that saved them. Gary Neal hit a three-pointer at the fourth-quarter buzzer to send the game into overtime where the Spurs would go on to win 110-103.

Gary Neal
Neal
Neal led rookies in three-point percentage at 41.9 percent during the regular season, good for 12th-best overall in the league among qualifiers. However, he wasn't even the best three-point shooter on his own team during the regular season. Matt Bonner and Richard Jefferson both shot a higher percentage.

Before Wednesday night, Neal had only one attempt this season in the final five seconds to win or tie a game -- missing a three-point attempt in the final seconds against the Suns on April 13 that would have tied the game.

From the Elias Sports Bureau: This was the first time in Spurs history that they avoided elimination from a playoff series with an overtime win. Prior to Neal, the last player to make a game-tying three-point field goal with less than one second remaining in the fourth quarter of a playoff game was the Detroit Pistons Chauncey Billups in 2004 against the New Jersey Nets. The Nets won that game in triple overtime.

A lot of credit for Wednesday's win goes to Manu Ginobili, who made a tough two-pointer with his foot on the three-point line to cut the Spurs deficit to one point with just over two seconds left in the fourth quarter. Ginobili, who struggled in Game 4, bounced back with 33 points on 10-of-18 shooting. The Spurs are 8-0 when Ginobili scores 30 or more points in the playoffs.

OTHER NBA ACTION:
The Oklahoma City Thunder eliminated the Denver Nuggets behind a dominant performance by Kevin Durant. With the Thunder trailing by nine points with 3:30 left in regulation, Durant led the comeback by outscoring the Nuggets 14-6 by himself. Durant hit five of six shots in that stretch and finished with 41 points, which tied a playoff career high. Of the four 40-point playoff games this season, Kevin Durant has two of them. The Thunder are now 7-0 this season when Durant scores 40 or more (5-0 in the regular season, 2-0 in the postseason).

All-new Honda CR-V coming this fall?

2010 Honda CR-V
Honda CR-V - Click above for high-res image gallery

The 2012 Honda CR-V is coming, and you can expect the successful compact crossover to continue in its current mold despite being an all-new generation. There's virtually no official information on the next iteration of the popular CUV, but since the current formula outsells even the Toyota RAV-4 and is still among the top finishers in comparison tests, we wouldn't expect any wild departures.

Fuel economy is likely to improve from the current CR-V's figure; front-wheel drive models may even hit 30 mpg on the highway, up from the current 28 mpg. C/D suggests that the current CR-V's 180 horsepower output is probably not subject to change. And while it seems odd to be talking about what's staying the same on a new model, the CR-V's massive sales numbers make it a golden goose for Honda that must be handled very carefully, not unlike the conservatively recrafted 2012 Civic that was just revealed at last week's New York Auto Show.

BMW X6 M, Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, and Porsche Panamera get dressed up in drag

Don’t worry, no one has manufactured high heels and extravagant wigs to place on any undeserving vehicles, but we have found a drag race that errs on the side of weird. Motortrend has taken a chance on a very eccentric review by pitting three out-of-place vehicles against one another: the BMW X6 M, Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, and Porsche Panamera.

If you take a look at the specs for these three models, a drag race may not seem too strange a task to undertake. The BMW X6M is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 mated to a six-speed automatic with manual shift paddles that together produce 555 HP and 501 lb-ft of torque. It gets from 0-60 mph in a whopping 4.3 seconds. The Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon comes equipped with a 6.2 liter supercharged V8 engine that delivers a total of 556 hp and 551 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine can be coupled to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. It also does the 0-60 mph sprint in 4.3 seconds. The last awkward vehicle of the test was a Porsche Panamera and its 4.6L twin turbo V8. This engine produces 500hp and 568 lb-ft of torque when mated to a Porsche’s 7-speed twin clutch transmission.

We won’t spoil all of the fun and tell you who won this crazy race, but we will tell you that this video is a definite must-see!

Hoops attendance down, but not by much

Last spring, when the NCAA released its 2009-10 college basketball attendance data, the conflicting numbers seemed to say two things at once: College hoops attendance was both down and up.

Of course, that wasn't true. In 2010, over 27 million people attended a college basketball game, the fourth-highest total in NCAA history. But because that number was spread across a larger-than-ever group of Division I schools, average attendance dipped by about three percent despite the sport's total gain.

Twelve months and one rather thrilling season later, the NCAA has released an updated set of data. Where does Division I college hoops attendance stand now?

The answer: Pretty much where it was in 2010. According to the NCAA, 27,626,125 fans showed up for D-I hoops games over the course of the 2010-11 season. That's an increase of 86,706 total fans from last season's tally. But the overall D-I attendance average figure took the slightest of dips: An average of eight fewer fans attended all D-I hoops events this year compared to 2010.

You can break this down further, if you're so inclined, by enlarging this handy chart. Among the notables are a slight year-over-year decline in NCAA tournament attendance and a more pronounced decline in 2010-11 Division I home game attendance.

Both of which are, to be frank, no big deal. That goes for the overall numbers, too. Sure, the NCAA might like to show a greater average fan increase. It would surely also prefer to show an increase in NCAA tournament attendance. But an overall increase isn't so bad itself, and when you factor in such a large number of schools -- 335 this season, the most of any year by the NCAA's count -- a tiny decrease in average fan attendance is hardly something to fret over. Frankly, it's the cost of doing business at a 335-school scale. Not every Division I gym is Rupp Arena or the Carrier Dome; some schools just play in tiny and poorly attended environments. Oh well. (Plus, the NCAA record an all-time high -- 1,788,364 fans over 235 games --in non-NCAA tournament neutral-site attendance. So that's something.)

Oh, and speaking of Rupp Arena, the NCAA also released the individual attendance rankings. You'll never guess who came in first. OK, so you probably will; it was Kentucky. Big Blue Nation packed Rupp to the tune 23,603 fans per game, the highest average mark in the country. Syracuse came in second with 22,312; Louisville, North Carolina and Tennessee round out the top five.

Here's an interesting tidbit: Coming in at No. 6 in the nation was BYU, which was one of only two schools to experience an average home attendance increased of greater than 4,000 fans. The other? San Diego State. The power of The Jimmer (and/or Kawhi Leonard) strikes again.

In any case, there are your 2010-11 attendance numbers. Not great. Not bad. Not showing off. Right in the meat of the curve.

In an age where college basketball seems constantly besieged by rumors of its popular demise, there are no sweeping conclusions to be drawn here. George Costanza would have been proud.

Caterham Seven Team Lotus Special Edition

After a failed partnership with Group Lotus, entrepreneur and Team Lotus boss, Tony Fernandes, has recently expanded his automotive profile with the acquisition of British sports car maker, Caterham Cars. The official confirmation was given at a special event at Duxford?s Imperial War Museum. Both companies have a strong link to Colin Chapman’s philosophy of ’less is more’ and Fernandes’ opportunistic interest in road cars places Caterham’s unique Seven on a pedestal. Proof of that is in the new special edition Team Lotus Special Edition Seven created to start this partnership off on the right foot.

The only distinguishing features for the Team Lotus Seven will be its Team Lotus-inspired livery paint job with matching interior. The most important addition will be a plaque carrying the signatures of Team Lotus F1 drivers, Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen. Owners will also receive a Seven history book signed by chief designer, Mike Gascoyne.

Caterham managing director, Ansar Ali, said: "Caterham Cars is starting an exciting and hugely important chapter, so it?s entirely fitting that we celebrate our opportunity to take Colin Chapman?s ?less is more? philosophy global, with this special car. Owners of the Special Edition Sevens will have not only a fabulous British sportscar, but a genuine piece of automotive history in their garage."

The new Team Lotus Seven will be limited to only 25 units, each priced at 13,650 or about $22,500 at the current exchange rates. The package can also be applied to any model in the line-up, up to the top of the range Superlight R500.

A poem for Shaquille O'Neal

The year: 2000. The king of the basketball world: Shaquille O'Neal.

As usual, I lost a bet. This time the circumstances were cloaked in stat geekery, and maddening. But the end result is: Shaquille O'Neal contributed more to the Celtics this year than Darko Milicic did to the Timberwolves. So, per the terms of the deal, I owe blogger Tom Ziller one flowery ode to O'Neal. It did not come out all that flowery, but at least it kind of rhymes:

The story of Shaquille

"I Dominate Games Always and Forever"
You looked in my eyes and swore it was true,
Explaining the masking tape, with
"I.D.G.A.F." written by you.

Trophies in stacks, 2000 was your year:
MVP, Finals MVP and the Larry O'Brien.
41 and 12 in the clincher,
the Pacers were crying.

They couldn't beat you,
So they talked free throws and girth.
You flexed, dunked and laughed,
Strongest giant on earth.

"Always and forever," though ...
That's a mighty long time.
Especially when you ignore advice
On stretching, weight loss and stepping to the line.

38 in street clothes, The Big Spectator
More years alive, this time, than nights wearing green.
If there's a game you're dominating,
It's not the NBA. Not without a time machine.

So how about that? I just called you a liar.
But not how you think; Of course age would eat glory.
No, you told the Big Whopper 11 years ago
Being cute with the truth, smiling through stories.

"I.D.G.A.F." you called a promise,
As your mother, Lucille, laughed and got antsy.
"I don't give a ..." were the real first four words, she said,
The last one, with the "f," she left silent. She's too fancy.

It's a silly old piece of tape,
Scribbled with childish intentions,
But it's also an attitude, a lifestyle and a warning
To those who'd consider further contract extensions.
