- Great highlight reel of Kobe Bryant's triumphant Drew League performance. If you ever wondered what Bryant's offense would look like without the structure of the NBA game, the answer appears to be, at this point, a lot of posting up.
- R.C. Buford kept a journal while touring the Middle East on behalf of PeacePlayers International. Inspiring stuff, especially the part where Buford teams with Israeli hoops legend Limor Mizrahi, Chad Ford and Sam Presti to form a team that lost to one of the program's squads of teenage girls.
- The people from the Sloan Sports Conference would very much like you to note their new website. Also, those interested in submitting research papers ... get cracking! One page abstracts are due to Jay C. Verrill, at researchpapers@sloansportsconference.com, by 5 p.m. ET on Friday September 16.
- Decisively NSFW, but funnier than you'd think: Blake Griffin on The Champs podcast, with, among others, Neal Brennan, the comedian who was integral to the Chapelle Show. Among the interesting tidbits here: Remember when Blake Griffin assassinated the Knicks with dunks? In that same game, he also annihilated them, he says, with flatulence, while lining up for free throws. He promptly blamed the smell on someone else.
- Watch Klay Thompson shoot. It's better than watching him play D.
- In a North Carolina pro-am tournament's key play, Raymond Felton embarrasses Nolan Smith, set to be his teammate in Portland.
- Do good-looking athletes make more money?
- Classy. The Lakers cut a bunch of staffers, and Lakers including Kobe Bryant and Luke Walton have pitched in to alleviate some of their financial pain.
- A little while ago, Leandro Barbosa's brother Artur told me Leandro might opt out of his Raptors contract to play in Brazil. Leandro didn't opt out, but hey, thanks to lockout magic, he can play in Brazil anyway, where the economy is strong and Flamengo club is making a big push for publicity.
- Rob Peterson imagines Stan Van Gundy with a big mouth. Rob Peterson, a real dreamer.
- Portland loves basketball. 2,500 people rallied for long-retired former third-best player on a famously disappointing team Arvydas Sabonis in a lockout. And I am way late to this, but Jonathan Abrams' Sabonis story is fantastic, and includes Bill Walton saying he let down Sabonis and the game of basketball by not getting up from the broadcast table and punching Rasheed Wallace on the nose.
- What is the Chinese media making of that Georgetown-Bayi Rockets brawl? Not much.
- What Hunter S. Thompson liked for breakfast. Can't really figure out how to relate that to the NBA, but go with it.
- One little comment has everyone wondering about Tim Duncan's longevity.
- 5-on-5 tackles the tough issues in Sacramento, and the action spills over into the parking lot.
- DeMarcus Cousins predicts lots of NBA players will go overseas.
