Sim Bhullar, a top-100 recruit from Canada who is 7-foot-4, has decommitted from Xavier and plans to enroll at New Mexico State instead because he wasn't able to immediately qualify to play, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "The whole time I was going to go to Xavier, I was really looking forward to it. The last few days I found out that I didn't qualify and I would have to pay regular tuition price this year," Bhullar said. "My family wasn’t ready to pay that much. We were looking for other options that would be cheaper."
Bhullar estimated that he would have had to pay about $42,000 for one year at XU. It's about $25,000 a year for an out-of-state resident to enroll at New Mexico State, per the school’s web site.
Bhullar said he will attend New Mexico State as a regular student this fall and plans to play ball the following year.
Bhullar is a big addition for New Mexico State in more ways than one. He averaged 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds playing against older competition on at international stage this summer while with the Canadian team in the FIBA Under-19 World Championships. And thinking globally, Bhullar being of Indian descent has already garnered him and his 7-foot-2 brother Tanveer plenty of notoriety.
New Mexico State could provide Bhullar a certain level of comfort. The Aggies currently have five Canadians on their roster, including three from his native Toronto thanks to the connections of associate head coach Paul Weir. Also, the school currently has another international recruit -- Remi Barry from France -- a coveted forward who didn't qualify and is hoping to play this season after enrolling last year.
Bhullar's arrival -- even if it's a delayed one -- helps solidify the Aggies' standing in the WAC. He's a project that appears to be one worth waiting for.
