VCU even outshooting Steve Kerr

The Virginia Commonwealth Rams are hot in every possible sense of the term. They're hot on the court, where, when we last saw then, they were tuning up Purdue's stolid defense to the tune of 1.48 points per possession. They're hot off the court, where the once-ridiculed selection barnstormed its way to a Sweet 16 berth and became one of the true stories of the tournament. Their coach, Shaka Smart, can't go 10 minutes without mention as one of the nation's "hottest" coaching prospects.

Frankly, they're even hot in practice. How hot? Hot enough to outshoot one of the greats. That shooter? TBS analyst and former NBA sharpshooter Steve Kerr, who just so happens to be the most accurate 3-point shooter in the history of the NBA, and who just so happened to stop by VCU's practice Thursday. Kerr was challenged by Smart to a practice-ending 3-point shooting competition with VCU guard Joey Rodriguez, and, well, like I said, the Rams are just that hot. From the Sporting News' Ryan Fagan:

Rams coach Shaka Smart likes to end practice on a lighter note, so when he saw TBS analyst Steve Kerr on the sidelines watching VCU’s shootaround Thursday at the Alamodome, he couldn’t resist bringing the former NBA sharpshooter onto the court. It was time for a 3-point contest, Kerr against Rodriguez.

"I thought for sure Steve would win because he’s the best shooter I’ve ever seen," Smart said. "But Joey stepped in there and knocked them in."

"That was cool," Rodriguez said after, the smile creasing both sides of his face. "I’m sure if he had a couple more warm-up shots he would have killed me. It was cool shooting against someone like that. And you could kind of see at the end he wanted to win. He’s a great shooter, probably the best clutch shooter of all time, one of them at least."

In the immortal words of The Big Lebowski: Sometimes you eat the bar and sometimes the bar eats you. Four days after torching one of the nation's top defenses en route to one of the most impressive weekends in the NCAA tournament -- a stretch that made VCU the first team to win three NCAA tournament games in seven days -- Rodriguez and the Rams can now count the most accurate 3-point shooter in NBA history among their defeated foes.

In other words, the Rams aren't just eating the bar. They're devouring it. What a week.
