Optical tracking data, and the power of being open

Just about every year at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, Sandy Weil is part of some of the most talked about research. Two years ago it was about the hot hand. A year ago it was about how not all blocked shots are created equally.

This year Weil's one of the first to really dig into optical tracking data, technology which shows where the different players are on the court, with powerful implications.

He found that open shots are way better than other shots. Video of his presentation just became available, so now you can watch for yourself:
