Drew Gordon to undergo knee surgery

New Mexico forward Drew Gordon is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, but isn't expected to miss any games since the UCLA transfer won't be eligible to play until December, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

"We're hoping it will be no more than a four-week deal, and only a week or two where he's not doing anything," said UNM coach Steve Alford. "It's not easy for him, but somehow he's got to stay focused and learn while he's on the sideline.

"And staying focused is not Drew's greatest gift," Alford said with a laugh, turning to Gordon.

While the Mountain West Conference's preseason newcomer of the year is expected to recover relatively quickly and only miss practice time, the injury is something to pay attention to. Gordon had surgery on the meniscus during his senior year of high school and also partially tore the patellar tendon in the same knee last year.

The 6-foot-9 junior is expected to have a major impact on the Lobos' frontcourt once he becomes eligible in December. Last season, he averaged 11.2 points and 5.2 rebounds for UCLA before parting ways with the team.
