Matt Howard takes talents to Greece
Still, it's good to hear Howard -- one of the more humble and impressive players in the sport -- was able to turn his success at the collegiate level into some sort of pro career. Turns out, that career will be in Greece, where Howard signed a contract with club Olympiacos this week.
In fact, I'd argue that a European career might just be Howard's destiny. Was there a more prototypical old school Euro-style American basketball star in the country last season? Howard is not particularly quick or athletic, but he shoots the ball well from the perimeter and uses angles to his advantage against defenders in the post. Throw in that nasty facial hair Howard rocked during the 2010 NCAA tournament, not to mention his admirable lack of concern for things like "style" or "non-saggy socks that look like they've been washed at least once a season," and he almost feels like a throwback to the first wave of quirky Euros that invaded the NBA in the late 1980s and early 1990s. If you saw Howard in a foreign tournament, pivoting in the lane while the wispy 'stache blows free in the wind, you'd have no idea the dude was American, right? It's a perfect fit.

Audio specialist, Sennheiser, may have lost some ground with the release of the highly popular Monster Beat headphones, but rest assured, when it comes to top flight quality, you can’t do any better than these guys.
And now that they’re collaborating with BMW Group DesignworksUSA, they’ve got something that should pique the interests of auto and audiophiles all over the world. Their latest work is the S1 Digital Pilot headphones, which was recently unveiled at AirVenture 2011 in Oshkosh.
The headphones comes with an inner metal band made of spring steel that makes it suitable for just about any kind of head shape it gets put in. Likewise, it also comes with two thick soft pads that allow it to be pressed firmly without making contact to the sensitive parts of the ear. These ear cups also take the shape of the sweep of a wing, hence the aviation theme of the whole product. The S1 Digital Pilot also has an ergonomic feature that allows people wearing glasses to fit the headphones comfortably without having to adjust their glasses all the time.
More details on the Sennheiser S1 Digital Pilot Headphones by BMW after the jump.

Report: Audi settles Chrysler Eminem ad infringement argument [w/video]
Audi and Chrysler looked ready to tussle over the German automaker's European commercial for the 2012 Audi A6 Avant. The commercial spot in question had many accusing it of being a bit too close to the Chrysler "Imported from Detroit" campaign that kicked off with Eminem selling the world on Detroit and the automaker's new 200 sedan. What could've been a negative battle has, in fact, become quite a positive for the city of Detroit.
The two automakers won't reveal specific terms of their settlement, but both state that the end result was reached amicably. As a result of their agreement, Audi is going to spend some cash on projects that work directly towards the revitalization of the Motor City.

The El Toro Marine Base in Irvine, CA has become somewhat of a quasi West Coast testing ground for the automotive industry in the past several years. Currently, it's perhaps best known for being the site of the Top Gear USA test track, but we've attended media events, learned how to drift, and watched a variety of manufacturers test out their wares on the military compound's abandoned runways.
Most recently, Ford turned the strips of tarmac into a replica of the X Games 17 RallyCross course and brought out two-time WRC champ Marcus Grönholm and Moto-X-legend-turned-rally-driver Brian Deegan for a practice session ahead of this weekend's main event. Lucky for us, they also asked us to tag along with the enticing offer of a shotgun seat in a 575-horsepower all-wheel drive Fiesta racecar. Count us in.

Heart condition ends Toledo recruit's career
So it must have been incredibly bittersweet for Kowalczyk to learn that one of his top recruits will never play a minute for the Rockets but hopefully at least be able to live a long and productive life.
According to the Toledo Blade, after a routine physical exam raised questions, Moss was eventually diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart condition known to cause sudden death in young athletes.
"As I told Justin's mother, we can look at this as good news that our tremendous sports medicine team at the University of Toledo caught this, and Justin no longer will be put in extreme danger," Kowalczyk said. "I'd also like to thank our medical staff for their diligence and for answering all of the questions Justin and his family had on this life-threatening disease."
Moss won't be prohibited from performing everyday activities, but anything more than that could put him at significant risk. He'll also remain on scholarship at UT and be afforded the opportunity to earn his college degree.
"We left there with the message that Justin can lead a very normal, healthy life -- outside of competitive, high-intensity exercise. That was his takeaway," Jones said. "He's a great kid, and that's why I feel so bad for him. But I also feel great because we prevented something tragic."
As a college career was ended before it began, a life might have been saved. It's sad while also cause for a sigh of relief. Toledo will miss Moss, especially considering it was already down three scholarships due to Academic Progress Rate penalties, but much more importantly, the school was able to protect one of its student-athletes.
The timing of it isn't fair. Moss won't get to experience the joy of stepping onto the court for his first game at Toledo. Kowalczyk, in his second season with the Rockets, is missing yet another piece of the puzzle coming off a four-win campaign.
Moss might never play again, but he's blessed to have learned he wouldn't be able to before something really went wrong.

Rumormill: Unconfirmed next-generation Ford and GM truck powertrain details swirl
Filed under: Truck, Technology, Ford, GM, Rumormill
TheDetroitBureau.com is reporting a few juicy rumors about the future of full-size pickups from both General Motors and Ford. According to details supplied by shadowy sources, Ford is currently hard at task on the development of a range of new V6 engines. The powerplants are said to be under development in a range of sizes, including 2.6-, 2.7- and 3.0-liter displacements. The engines are being crafted under the codename "Nano" with a single dual-stage turbo making up for the cut in displacement. The largest of the trio is said to have a target of 300-315 horsepower, which is effectively what the current naturally-aspirated 3.0-liter V6 churns out. TDB maintains that the new V6 lumps may also work their way into the Mustang line at some point as well.
The report indicates that GM, meanwhile, is hard at work on a forced-induction V6 of its very own to fight Ford's EcoBoost surge. Additionally, the company's heavy-duty trucks will be the only models available with the big-boy 6.2-liter V8, while both light- and heavy-duty pickups will be available with the company's 6.0-liter V8. Finally, the tried-and-true 5.3-liter V8 will soldier on for the next-generation as well.

Nolan Smith ejected from AAU event
In reality, Smith was doing his best Norman Dale impression. And guess what? It worked.
CBS's Jeff Goodman spoke with Smith, who was coaching AAU outfit D.C. Assault at a tournament in Phoenix on Wednesday night, and got him to discuss his tactics. According to Smith, D.C. Assault was struggling, the refs were making questionable calls, and the former Duke star decided that he needed to inspire a little "fire" in his kids. To wit:
"It felt good," the usually mild-mannered Smith said just minutes after the game. "Coaching and playing is totally different. I was frustrated with the team not playing hard and not playing with energy. I knew my team would respond in the right way." [...] "We were down 19 when I did it," Smith said. "And we came back and lost by 2."
It's official: I have a mental image of Smith as Hickory High coach Norman Dale. I can just see it. Smith tells the ref to throw him out, the ref says, "well, I guess you've got your reasons," as Smith turns back to the bench and hands his leather notebook to terrified assistant coach Kyle Singler. (Singler wasn't there, but don't ruin this for me; I am greatly enjoying this mental image.) The only thing missing is Singler telling the players to "not get caught watching the paint dry" as he leads them to a miraculous comeback victory. Truly inspirational stuff.

Report: VW blasts new CAFE standards, alleges bias towards truck makers
Filed under: Government/Legal, Volkswagen
Automakers are officially choosing sides on the new proposed Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, and while nearly every company has come out with statements of support, Volkswagen has chosen to head the camp opposed to the plan. The German company has released an official statement on President Barack Obama's 54.5 mpg corporate average by 2025, saying that VW doesn't endorse the move. Why? Apparently the people's automaker feels that the regulations unfairly target passenger cars while giving large trucks special treatment.According to VW, passenger vehicles face a five percent annual increase in fuel economy, while light trucks merely have to attain 3.5 percent annual increases. While it's true that Volkswagen doesn't produce anything that could compete with the Ford F-150, the company's stable is stocked with a few vehicles that will fall under the light truck designation, including the Routan minivan and Touareg SUV. Additionally, Volkswagen says that the proposal pushes automakers to manufacture more large and inefficient models.
Volkswagen finds itself in thin company when it comes to its stance. So far, nearly every other automaker has come out in support of the move, including Ford, Chrysler, General Motors, Hyundai and Toyota among others. Hit the jump for VW's official statement.

Official: Plug-in hybrid Ford F-Series Super Duty trucks coming in 2013
Filed under: Hybrid, Truck, Technology, Work, Ford, Diesel
Working in collaboration with Ford, Azure's plug-in hybrid technology will debut on the F-550 Super Duty chassis cab in early 2013. This agreement also allows for Azure to perform plug-in hybrid powertrain conversions on all available configurations of Ford's F-350 and F-450 trucks. Azure says that roughly two-thirds of its plug-in hybrid system will be applicable for all Super Duty configurations, with approximately one-third needing to be powertrain-specific (i.e. gasoline or diesel).
Additionally, the Azure-Ford agreement includes a so-called "ship-thru" provision that will allow Azure to sell its converted vehicles through qualified Ford Commercial Truck dealerships in North America. In 2009, Azure struck up a similar deal with Ford for the Transit Connect Electric.

Trust and perception rule the legacy
On the surface, that looks completely asinine. He was already a star in the NBA. My reasoning was that his legacy and perception had vaulted into territories he hadn’t really ever approached before. During the regular season, I argued with fans in the Daily Dime Live many nights and tried to convince a significant number of chatters that Dirk was not overrated and was actually quite clutch. It seemed insane to me that people could look at Dirk throughout his career and consider him a choke artist.
People viewed a couple of missed free throws in the 2006 Finals as the all-encompassing nature of what he is and always has been, despite a lot of evidence that said otherwise.
The reason I had him pegged as the breakout star of last season was that he went from a guy who was arguably in the top 50 players of all time to being considered a top 20 player of all time by a lot of pundits and fans. By the end of the playoffs, Dirk was no longer a question. He was simply the presumed dagger to every ending.
Maybe part of that was a large portion of people seemingly rooting for Dirk to take down the Miami Heat. Maybe it was his insane play coinciding with the success of his team that was surging his legacy and reputation to new heights. Whatever the reason was, Dirk was now an unquestioned NBA legend. The claims that he wasn’t clutch were universally preposterous after the Mavs swept the Lakers. When he dismantled the Thunder, he was now being sold as a truly unstoppable force.
The funny thing about his run in the playoffs is he’s had better numbers and been more efficient before. While it seems like he never missed during the 2011 title run, he actually had much higher true shooting percentages and effective field goal percentages the previous two playoffs. He had only his seventh highest career playoff PER in 2011. The difference this time was his team’s success.
Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel had an article a couple days ago discussing the concept of choking. In it, he talked to former NBA player Alonzo Mourning and college football analyst Spencer Tillman about it.
“I think it happens to everybody,” says former Heat great Alonzo Mourning, now a team community-relations executive. “We, as professional athletes, when we’re put in that situation, the public, the team, everybody watching expects you to respond at that moment because you’re a highly paid athlete.”Rob Mahoney from NBC Sports’ Pro Basketball Talk elaborated on this point further:
But these are human beings, not machines, so more often than anyone would care to admit our sporting contests are decided by who blinks first.
“There are certain pressure points where the sense of responsibility rises,” Mourning says. “Anxiety increases and people, for lack of a better word, get nervous. People tighten up. You do things that you would not do when you’re at a comfort level.”
That’s not just a sports phenomenon either.
“All choking is,” says CBS college football analyst Spencer Tillman, “is when external situations impact what has traditionally been routine and normal for you.”
More accurately, “choking,” is whatever the public consensus decides that it should be, which usually serves to confirm a widely held belief of a player or is sparked and sustained by a single and brilliant irrefutable play.
Hit a game-winning shot in a big playoff game, and your reputation is made. Miss a crucial free throw with the game on the line, and that same rep is sunk…so long as the adoring public is willing to let the visions of clutch greatness go. The memory of the basketball fan collective is astoundingly selective, and whatever evidence is deemed admissible is twisted and spun in a way that simultaneously creates a clutch rsum and amends the very fluid definition of the term itself. Then come the arguments based on such a malleable foundation, a discussion that pretends to be based on a shared notion but only remains bound by the most abstract of concepts.
“Clutch,” is whatever we want it to be.
The reason people argue that Kobe is clutch isn’t because of the numbers or necessarily an overwhelming set of consistent evidence. It’s because they trust him with the ball in his hands when the Lakers need a big shot. They can claim that the evidence is taken out of context or that Henry Abbott has a vendetta against Kobe (which is an absolutely hilarious notion). But really the only thing that matters when discussing who is and isn’t clutch is whether or not you trust them.
Kobe Bryant has made enough shots and won enough games with the result in question to make fans generally comfortable with him getting the next clutch shot. Carmelo Anthony is pretty much in that circle of trust as well. Paul Pierce is very much in that realm. Ray Allen might be the mayor of this place of trust.
LeBron James is not someone who has earned that universal trust with his play. For a lot of basketball fans before the 2011 playoffs, Dirk hadn’t won a title and “choked away” his shot at one in 2006. People who measure greatness by jewelry earned didn’t exactly trust him.
The perception of the individual fan discussing whether or not someone is clutch or not clutch, overrated or underrated, underpaid or overpaid is really the only thing that matters in such discussions. It’s nearly impossible to look at the entire body of evidence when debating these topics because two fans can look at the exact same play and see it two completely different ways.
Sports are always such a personal, internal catalyst for how we feel about the things we see. We look for an animalistic satisfaction in the way things happen on the field. We want to see overpowering moments of success. We want to see domination. But we also want to see someone come down to the final shot and come through during the most pressure-packed moments. We want to feel the drama of what’s happening, trust that our guy will come through when it counts the most, and feel that validation of knowing he would succeed.
Before this season, mostly Mavericks fans felt comfortable with Dirk holding their fate in his hands. It wasn’t a completely shared perception around the basketball annals of fans’ minds. After the latest 21 of his career 124 playoff games, Dirk has turned that impression around.
The next true breakout star in the NBA probably won’t be a young player who begins a legacy before our very eyes. It might just be someone who changes the universal perception of an existing one.

Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano Matte Red Stallone by Mansory

Back in 2008, German tuning extraordinaire, Mansory, took to the Geneva Motor Show with a spectacular package for the Ferrari 599 Fiorano called the Stallone. This package came baring 720 HP and a number of weight saving upgrades for spectacular performance. At the time, anyone would have been crazy to suggest to Mansory that the Stallone was not complete, but after three years and a couple of debuts, one guy thinks he knows just what the Ferrari needs to finish its look.
The brains behind the Stallone makeover is a TeamSpeed forum member and car enthusiast who feels that a matte red paint job, an updated interior, and possibly an extra engine/software upgrade or two would complete the package. At his request, Mansory prepared this one-off edition Stallone and the result is the beautiful machine seen in these pictures.
For the transformation, the forum member took inspiration from the 599XX and the 599 GTO, both revealed after the original Stallone package. The new Stallone’s interior, covered in Alcantara, was taken from the GTO, while the special shark wings on both sides of the car came from the 599XX. Next to these additions, the Matte Red Stallone also received a new rear with an integrated diffuser and new side skirts.
Mechanically speaking, Mansory tweaked the V12 engine by adding a new exhaust system, improved cats, and a remap of the ECU. These additions were then combined with a lowered suspension. All we need to hear now is the final output.

- K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune "There are no collective bargaining talks currently scheduled in a lockout that will be four weeks old on Friday. Most league observers assume that, unlike the NFL, the NBA will miss games. Some owners have told Commissioner David Stern their teams will lose less money sitting out an entire season than operating under current financial conditions. That's why, even before Monday's NFL agreement, the NBA's labor issues always were more dire. Simplistically, the NFL's issues were mostly centered on how to fairly split a $9 billion pie. By several accounts, all teams but the Lions and Dolphins turned profits last season. Conversely, the NBA claims 22 of its 30 franchises are losing money, with losses totaling $300 million. Throw in other sticking points, such as the owners' desire for a hard salary cap and the limiting of contract guarantees, and there is a massive bridge to be crossed between the NBA and the players' union. The NFL union decertified and filed an antitrust suit to use the courts in an attempt to lift the lockout and get owners to negotiate in good faith. That hasn't happened yet in the NBA, although several prominent agents explored that topic with union boss Billy Hunter in a meeting late last week. Typically, negotiations never get serious until a deadline for canceling games looms. The NBA is months away from that — and miles away from an agreement."
- Charles F. Gardner of the of Journal Sentinel: "Brandon Jennings isn't thinking about going to Europe to play basketball, at least not yet. Jennings has been working out in Baltimore since the lockout started, and the 21-year-old Milwaukee Bucks point guard has hardly slowed down his training pace. He has added boxing and mixed martial arts to his regimen while working on his basketball skills with former Duke guard Jason Williams. While no progress has been made in nearly a month since the start of the owners' lockout, Jennings is not worrying about it. 'I feel if it does drag out, any player would consider going overseas,"'Jennings said. 'Right now, I'm just working hard to get better and better.' Jennings played in Italy as a 19-year-old, turning pro after finishing high school. When he returned for the 2009 NBA draft, the Bucks selected him No.?10 overall, and he immediately became the team's point guard and started all 89 games (including playoffs) during his rookie season."
- Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press: "Fans have a right to question president of basketball operations Joe Dumars because they are the consumers, those who had to endure Dumars' previous two hires, Michael Curry and John Kuester. Skepticism is understandable. ... There was another candidate who could have created a buzz -- Pistons great Bill Laimbeer. No doubt hiring him would have created excitement and sold a few tickets. ... But that line of thinking is shortsighted. Experience counts for something, and Laimbeer has none as a head coach in the NBA. There are no guarantees with Frank, who by most accounts is a good coach. It's fair to wonder whether he will be able to navigate the land mines that have blown up in past coaches' faces. But at this juncture in franchise history, the Pistons have to make the move with the highest likelihood of success, and Frank offers that. Laimbeer, despite considerable success in the WNBA, is still trying to establish himself in the NBA after two seasons as an assistant with the Timberwolves. The Pistons couldn't take a chance on him."
- Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune: "I'm hearing Rick Adelman didn't come to town on Saturday to interview with David Kahn and Glen Taylor as planned, but instead talked by phone with Kahn at some length about the job. Translated, that probably means he has some interest in the job, but just how much -- or what factors he is weighing -- is the big question. Whatever interest he has surprises many around the league who figure he'll only come back to coach a veteran team or expected him to take a breather from basketball for awhile during a summer when he has a couple of big family weddings to attend. I've tried reaching him several times, but without any success. If he indeed is sincerely interested, I'd expect he'd still come to town at some point to meet with Taylor. I don't believe Taylor was part of the discussion between Kahn and Adelman that I've been told took place over the weekend."
- Bob Finnan of The News-Herald: "NBA teams are beginning to lay off employees during the lockout that has now lasted close to a month. The Cavaliers, however, have not experienced any layoffs yet, a source said. The NBA league office recently laid off 114 employees, although they said it wasn't because of the lockout. Observers say the work stoppage could cause the NBA to miss games. The start of the regular season is around Nov. 1."
- Mike Wells of The Indianapolis Star: "I was all in favor of the Pacers getting Mayo at the deadline last year. He would have instantly been the Pacers’ go-to player because of his ability to get to the basket. I still think Mayo would make the Pacers a better team but I’m not sure if he’s as high on their priority list (power forward) as he was back in February for a few reasons. Paul George closed the season strong and he’s an offseason of lifting weights away from being even better. George Hill can play both guard positions. Lance Stephenson, who, at the rate he’s going, could work his way into the rotation next season, can play both guard spots, too. There’s also Danny Granger, Dahntay Jones and Brandon Rush on the wing. I’d be shocked if the Pacers didn’t try to trade at least one of their wings once free agency starts. J-Mac won’t be in the mix of any trades because he’s an unrestricted free agent."
- Brian T. Smith of The Salt Lake Tribune: "Center Kyrylo Fesenko is reportedly close to signing a contract with professional Ukrainian team Dnipro. But Fesenko's agent, Stu Lash, said Monday that he is unaware of the deal. On the surface, the move would make sense for Fesenko. The 24-year-old is a native of the Ukraine, will compete in the 2011 EuroBasket tournament for his home country and still has personal ties to the region. Fesenko was recently linked to Spanish club Baskonia, though, and he has been pursued by other international teams in the past. Fesenko is also expected to receive attention from NBA teams once the lockout ends and free agency begins. The 7-foot-1, 280-pound Fesenko averaged 2 points, 2 rebounds and 8.6 minutes last season in 53 games for the Jazz. He is no longer under contract with Utah, and will become an unrestricted free agent once the 2011-12 season starts."
- Craig Stouffer of the Washington Examiner: "It’s the offseason. It’s an exhibition game. It’s in the Phililppines. What better place for JaVale McGee to prove that he is one of the lockout’s biggest stars. A little dunk/block/plank combination will do the trick: McGee finished off his second trip to Asia since the season ended with another memorable plank in the Hong Kong airport (even if the description overheard at the end of this video is worth noting). The entertainment factor is off the charts. But is there any chance that planking in the middle of a game shows that even when McGee is playing basketball – that is his profession, by the way – his focus seems to be somewhere else?"
- Kerry Eggers of The Portland Tribune: "Bill Schonely goes into the hospital Tuesday to have a new defibrillator inserted into his chest. 'Keeps me ticking,' says the Trail Blazers broadcasting legend, 82, whose current apparatus has lasted for seven years. 'If I have any problems with my electrical system, it lets us know.' Prayers be with you, Schonz."
- David Damron of the Orlando Sentinel: "The Orlando Magic agreed in 2007 to build five community gyms to help seal a public-financing deal for the new $480 million arena, and today, its team-themed facilities burst with youth leagues, day campers, workout warriors and Zumba lovers. However, these new gyms are also going to cost taxpayers twice as much to run as the county originally estimated, a review of budget records shows. Instead of breaking even, the five facilities are expected to generate a $1.25 million annual deficit to operate, once user fees are balanced against staffing and other costs. After-school and summer programs at other facilities would continue to be capped or shrink to offset most of the steeper operating costs at the Magic gyms. 'The community was told these were going to be a bonus and not take away anything,' Commissioner Ted Edwards said. 'The residents didn't get what they were promised.' The projected deficits are coming into focus this summer as county leaders craft a spending plan for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1. That blueprint, which will face a final vote this fall, basically holds the parks and recreation budget steady, with funding slated to slip from $15.1 million to $14.7 million."

Quick Spin: Suzuki Electric Vehicle Prototype [w/video]

Lounging Around In Suzuki's Race to Electrify Your Living RoomIn the Great Race to bring a full-fledged electric vehicle to market, Suzuki is refusing to fall behind. And with a minimal R&D budget and a tenuous relationship with its partners at Volkswagen, a rag-tag band of engineers are out to prove that Suzuki can hang with the big boys of the automotive universe. And here is their star.
Like every other EV under development, Suzuki's vehicle is a balance of compromises. But the engineers from its North American arm won't let comfort be trumped by silly modern niceties like a windshield. Or headlamps. Or airbags. Or any kind of weather protection. No, this is among the purest EV experiencse ever crafted by the hand of man. We've driven it. And you can too.

Report: Jeremy Clarkson to narrate Forza 4
Filed under: Toys/Games, Celebrities
Jeremy Clarkson is coming to an Xbox near you. The Top Gear presenter has reportedly joined forces with Turn 10 Studios to lend his voice and automotive knowledge to the company's upcoming Forza 4 video game. There's a portion of Forza 4 called AutoVista, which is an in-game showroom where players can examine cars in great detail. Clarkson provides commentary in this area of the game, giving players his voiced-over viewpoint on specific cars.
We can only hope and assume that the commentary will include some of Jezza's trademark catchphrases like "...in the world." Regardless, adding Clarkson only rounds out the amount of Top Gear goodies found in the new game, all of which should be enough to have at least a few Sony PS3 owners considering making the switch to Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Cat Mobley on his comeback bid, labor issues and medical marijuana
Mobley scored 37 points for Go H.A.M. (whose logo oddly resembles the Piggly Wiggly, if the pig had a basketball in its mouth). He beat defenders with his crossover, mercilessly posted up smaller defenders for easy buckets, drained rainbow 3s, hit ridiculous leaners, went right with a vicious drive and-1, pulled the chair out on his man to force a turnover, swatted the ball away on a one-on-one break, flew in to the basket area and followed a DeRozan miss, thread the needle in traffic to his big man, then iced the game with a big shot inside of two minutes.
The PA announcer at Washington Park's gym offers a running commentary of each game. As he said over the mic, "Get a professional to do the job!" On the far side of the gym, an old-timer squawked, "They took his ass out of the nursing home and look at this!"
We caught up with Mobley after the game to discuss his three-year quest to return to the NBA.
Mobley discussed his frustration with the New York Knicks, whom he feels unfairly precipitated his retirement, NBA labor issues and his newest cause: trying to open a marijuana dispensary in Providence, RI and educating the public on the issue.Mobley says medical marijuana is about compassion and health. He feels passionately that the biggest hurdle in framing the conversation is the stigma carried by marijuana, one he feels historically has racial overtones and is widely misunderstood.

Jimmer Fredette's success now helps UNLV
That much became obvious when Dave Rice, the former BYU associate head coach and offensive mastermind, took the job at his alma matter. And according to the Las Vegas Sun, Rice smartly hasn't been shy about linking himself to Fredette's legend.
And once he identifies the players he believes fit it best, Jimmer Fredette's success story is one that he can pitch that will grab the attention of the high school players he's currently recruiting. It's a relevant trick he'll likely be able to pull out of his bag for many years to come.
"Jimmer deserves the bulk of the credit for what he became, but the reality is he had a lot of help from our staff," he said. "And so I think the thing that really speaks volumes is that he came to us as a good player, but did not come to us as a finished product. So, I think the fact that I can actually speak with credibility in terms of our role in helping him develop and the freedom we gave him and what that did for him."
Already, Fredette's national player of the year status playing under Rice has paid dividends at UNLV.
When 2013 recruit Christian Wood committed to UNLV, he noted to the Las Vegas Sun that Rice had coached Fredette and that associate head coach Justin Hutson had coached Kawhi Leonard at San Diego State.
When Baltimore point guard Daquan Cook decided to commit to the Rebels, his AAU coach told the Baltimore Sun, "Coach Rice, we researched him, and he did really well with Jimmer Fredette."
And then there's Katin Reinhardt, the former USC commit who UNLV is after and is already getting headlines as the "Next Jimmer." It might not be out of the question because Reinhardt has already heard that kind of talk from Rice, according to the Las Vegas Sun.
"He compared me to Jimmer Fredette a lot," Reinhardt said, referring to Rice's former star pupil at BYU. "How he let him play is how he'll let me play. That freedom, being able to do that stuff, that's what I look at. Look where Jimmer got. He went to the NBA as a lottery pick. So if you could get that kind of coach to be behind you 100 percent, that's everything you could ask for."
Who would have thought that UNLV's nemesis that is The Jimmer would ever help the Rebels in some way? It was already a little awkward when the Maloofs declared Fredette a Sacramento King with signage at the Palms.
But now thanks to Rice's presence, Fredette is helping out UNLV. He even released a statement that the Rebels put out on the day Rice was hired.
"Coach Rice has such a great feel on the offensive end," Fredette said. "Working with him these past four seasons has given me great confidence as a player. I'm glad to see him get a chance to be a head coach. He deserves it."
