Toledo coach Tod Kowalczyk inherited troubles with the NCAA Academic Progress Rate, and after coaching the Rockets to a 4-28 record in his first season, he recently was informed the team is facing a reduction of three scholarships as a penalty. Cutting the number of available scholarships from 13 to 10 comes with consequences, and Kowalczyk said in a statement that one player would have to leave the program as a result of the crunch.
As a result, one of the men's basketball players will be transferring to another school. Redshirt freshman Hayden Humes, a 6-8 forward who averaged 5.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in 32 games last year, informed Kowalczyk last week that he will be leaving the UT program.
"Hayden is one of the finest young men I've had the privilege to coach," Kowalczyk said. "I wish he could stay, but I respect his decision to explore other options. I know he will be successful in his future endeavors."
Ouch.
Earlier this month, Kowalczyk also announced that guards Malcolm Griffin and J.T. Thomas would transfer, helping clear the way for the team's rebuilding process to continue. The Rockets are welcoming in a four-player recruiting class and four transfers including junior guards Dominique Buckley from Iowa State and Curtis Dennis from New Mexico are expected to become eligible next season.
The team won only one game in the MAC last season, so it'll need every bit of help and now have to overcome the APR hit.
"Losing three scholarships was not something we expected, but we will never use this as an excuse," Kowalczyk said in a statement. "We were hired to rectify this situation and restore the image of Rocket basketball. We will build a program that is successful in the classroom and on the court."
