Paris: Peugeot 208 Type R5 rally car looks fast sitting still
Filed under: Motorsports, Europe, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Peugeot, Off-Road, Racing
Last week, we were able to bring you all of the details regarding Peugeot's new 208 Type R5 rally car, but there was only a shadowy teaser image with which to illustrate the pre-production rally titan.
Thankfully, with our meticulous shooters combing the floor, we now have a good long look at the Peugeot 208 R5, which the French automaker confirms will race next year in series like the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, European Rally Championship and the National Championships.
The 208 R5 is, of course, just as racy as we'd hoped, with a wheels-at-the-absolute-corners stance, huge white shoes wearing hometown Michelin rubber, a sizable rear wing and sporty graphics as far as the eye can see. Don't get used to seeing it in quite so gleaming a shade of white, however, as this one little guy is destined to get dirty, fast.

Video: Red Bull releases re-edit of F1 car in Lincoln Tunnel with only engine sounds
Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Racing
Just like any vacation, Red Bull Racing had plenty of fun last month when it did a little sightseeing in New York City and New Jersey. First, the team stopped and got a photo op with the New York skyline while playing The Star-Spangled Banner and then it took to the streets of New Jersey driving along the proposed route of the 2014 Grand Prix of America (you know, if it actually happens). Every good trip must come to an end though, so the team heads to the Lincoln Tunnel for the final video of Red Bull's trip, which is just as fun to watch as it is to listen to.
Red Bull Racing teased us with this video last month, but now we finally get to see its RB7 Formula One racer tearing through the tunnel connecting New Jersey and Manhattan. The 1.5-mile long tubes usually see daily traffic of well over 100,000 vehicles, and we're sure there's never been such a powerful car (or so little traffic) commuting underneath the Hudson River. The best part is that the car's engine provides the only soundtrack.
Check out the video below to see and hear what it's like to let a Formula One car loose in the Lincoln Tunnel.

The brief was simple: test Icon's new Raiden all-condition, all-weather motorcycle gear by putting two riders through all conditions and every kind of weather. The result is a 30-minute mini-movie called The Raiden Files that puts Ernie Vigil and The New Guy on a ride from Portland, Oregon to Dakar, Senegal with a few stops along the way.
There's a two-wheeled parkour through Portland, 1,000 GoPros, four-wheeled drones, Costa Rican rainforests and Brazilian deserts, and a whole lot more in the epic ride video posted below. It's good stuff, and if you need more Icon's Limiter magazine has it.

Paris: Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is world's first production plug-in hybrid CUV [w/video]
Filed under: Hybrid, Videos, Paris Motor Show, Crossover, Mitsubishi, Electric
Though Mitsubishi first showed us the form of its 2013 Outlander in Geneva a while back, the company saved its plug-in hybrid crossover for this week's Paris Motor Show soiree.
Mitsubishi is quite proud to offer what it says is the world's first production PHEV utility vehicle, a new model that makes use of established technologies within the company. Learnings from the company's i-MiEV electric car have worked there way into a vehicle that can travel up to 55 kilometers (34 miles) on lithium-ion battery power. Two electric motors independently power the front and rear wheels of the Outlander, while the gasoline-powered engine can be used as a generator for the motors, or to power the vehicle directly. The target combined fuel economy for the Outlander PHEV is 61 km/liter, or roughly 143 miles per gallon.
The Outlander PHEV will be introduced in the Japanese market in the first part of 2013, with European and North American markets to follow on. There is no word about an on-sale date, but while you're pondering the possibilities, check out an official video by scrolling down and peruse our high-res image gallery.

Paris: 2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata still brings a smile to our faces
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Paris Motor Show, Mazda
Believe it or not, despite the fact that Mazda first unveiled its refreshed 2013 MX-5 Miata in July of this year, the 2012 Paris Motor Show in late September is the first time we've run across the iconic sports car in the metal. And so we wasted no time in filling our DSLRs with a full spate of images.
As you can see, while we eagerly await the still-not-that-close next-generation Miata, the current MX-5's well-known smiley visage has been toned down for 2013, and that's most definitely a good thing in our books. Besides that, Mazda claims to have "[enhanced] throttle response and brake return." Sounds like a nice addition to what is already a winning package.
We suggest combing through the upgrades in our high-res image gallery above. And if you like what you see, Mazda officials tell Autoblog that your local dealer should be getting their 2013 MX-5 stock right about... now.

Paris: 2013 Kia Pro_cee'd three-door proceeds to impress [w/video]
Filed under: Budget, Europe, Videos, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Kia
Sexy as MPVs are, the new Carens wasn't the only world premiere happening on the Kia stand at today's Paris Motor Show. Here, we see the new three-door Pro_cee'd hatchback - a sharp-looking car that shares many of its underpinnings with the Hyundai i30 three-door that also took the stage at the Paris expo.
Aside from the three-door body style, the Pro_cee'd doesn't differ too much from the five-door Cee'd that bowed in Geneva earlier this year. That means buyers will be treated to a host of powertrain options, in both gasoline and diesel variants, ranging from 89 to 133 horsepower, mated to six-speed manual, automatic and even one dual-clutch transmission.
But Kia is hoping the Pro_cee'd will win over buyers who want something stylish above all. Peter Schreyer, Kia's Chief Design Officer, stated that "You know from a single glance that this is a car you want to drive, not just own." If you're of like mind, have a glance below for the full details and a quick video.

Paris: Renault Clio is the bold new face of France's diamond brand
Filed under: Europe, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Renault, Design/Style
Check out the new Renault Clio, which has just been revealed at the Paris Motor Show. If you like what you see, then chances you are going to like future Renault models. Along with introducing the fourth-generation Clio, Renault also says that this new styling will be the new face of the French automaker's future products.
Once classified as a supermini, the Clio has since grown into a B-segment contender similar to the closely related Nissan Versa. The centerpiece of the new design features a large Renault logo that stands out against a black background in the grille. Like the previous Clio, the new model will be available in both five-door hatchback and estate/station wagon variants, but for now, it doesn't appear a three-door model will make it into the mix.
Make no mistake, the Clio is one of the most important reveals of the entire Paris show. And Renault is treating it as such, with plans to launch it with "no fewer than five" new engines. On top of that, the big Clio hardware news is the addition of stop/start technology and a dual-clutch transmission available on the option list. Renault says that its 90-horsepower 1.5-liter dCi engine will attain fuel consumption figures close to a hybrid-electric vehicle, making it the first car in the B-segment to do so.
On the technology front, the Clio introduces Renault's new R-Link multimedia system that will eventually spread to the rest of the Renault lineup. R-Link not only includes features like TomTom navigation and traffic, but it also allows drivers to operate Coyote Series alerts (a European social-media-like service warning of road hazards) and the R-Link Store to find and use automotive apps.
Be sure to flip through our live photos of the Clio hatchback, and if you have time, Renault's mile-long press release is posted below.

Paris: Venturi America is still awesome, still not coming to the U.S. [w/videos]
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Europe, Paris Motor Show, UAW/Unions, Electric, Off-Road, MISC
It's been two years since we first met the Venturi America on this very Paris Motor Show floor, and we're still in love with the idea of an electric car that is as capable on the street as it is on the trail. Venturi Automobiles says it is only making 100 of these door-less electric enduro cars, but despite its name, none of them are to be sold in the U.S.
Venturi calls the America a "high-riding sports car," and on paper, we're willing to agree on both counts based on the car's looks and its specs. The styling of the America is what we might imagine a collaboration between Smart and Jeep, with the two-passenger car looking every bit the part of a modern street-legal dune buggy, right down to its ample ground clearance and open cockpit design. In terms of its performance, the Venturi-developed electric powertrain is said to produce 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which is pretty great for a 3,100-pound car. There are also three driver-selectable modes (Cruising, Sport and Super Sport), so the car's dynamic settings allow the driver to choose between maximum driving range and maximum performance. Powered by a 53 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, the America has a driving a range of around 186 miles (presumably in Cruising mode) with a top speed of 124 miles per hour.
Since we're likely never to see a Venture in America on our shores, you'll want to check out our image gallery and videos of the live reveal and an advertisement featurette below. If nothing else, the latter will give you the chance to brush up on your French.

Report: Hamilton in, Schumacher out at Mercedes F1 in $100M deal
Filed under: Motorsports, Performance, Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Mercedes-Benz, Earnings/Financials, McLaren
In 1995, a 10-year-old Lewis Hamilton walked up to McLaren team principal Ron Dennis and declared "I want to race for you one day." That fateful moment began a relationship between Hamilton, Dennis, and McLaren which culminated in the 2008 Formula One Championship. A relationship that, at least professionally, has come to an end.
Word from the UK's Telegraph is that Hamilton has left McLaren for the Mercedes-Benz factory team in a three-year deal that could be worth as much as $100 million. The departure of the 27-year-old driver from McLaren marks one of the biggest driver transfers in motorsport in recent memory. Though the German F1 team has won only a single race since returning to the sport in 2010, Hamilton and Mercedes both appear to be betting heavily on the turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engine specifications for 2014.
The move has major ramifications for both teams. At McLaren, team principal Martin Whitmarsh said they had "no plan B" for their lead driver, however, it has already announced Mexican driver Sergio Perez as Hamilton's replacement in 2013.
The more controversial fallout is that Hamilton now replaces Michael Schumacher for next season. The seven-time World Champion first retired from Ferrari at the end of the 2006 season, returning to the sport in 2010 with Mercedes, where he has struggled. In reaction to the announcement, Schumi said that he would concentrate on the remaining races this season, and that he wished Hamilton well.
Hamilton's recent history with McLaren has been highlighted by salary disputes and comments on team tactics. Telegraph writer Tom Cary openly ponders the influence of XIX Entertainment - The London-based firm represents Hamilton, and stands to make more money from the new contract. As for Schumacher, there is no word on his plans after the current Formula 1 season.

Paris: We've obsessively covered Day 1 of the 2012 Paris Motor Show
Like every auto show that asks us to leave the continent we call home, the 2012 Paris Motor Show has proven itself to be larger in size and scope than we could've ever imagined. But we've been doing this for a while now and know our job well, which is to cover the news and debuts live from the show floor and bring those words and images back to those we left behind.
Day 1 has ended, and you can find a complete wrap-up of the vehicles we've covered so far below. There's a lot more coming tomorrow, but if there's a particular vehicle you want to see or know more about, let us know in Comments and we'll try to track it down.

Paris: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive offers guilt-free, zero-emission supercar fun... for $537K
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Technology, Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz, Electric
The folks at Mercedes-Benz must have a guilty conscience when it comes to the SLS AMG supercar. Why else would the German automaker follow up the snarling V8-powered debut of the modern gullwing with the SLS AMG E-Cell, and now the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive? While the retina-searing E-Cell was a merely prototype, the vehicle you see here is a production version, and can be yours for a cool half a million bucks.
Mercedes-Benz says this electrified gullwing is the most powerful vehicle in the AMG stable. With four electric motors - one at each wheel - producing a combined 740 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque, the SLS Electric Drive can rocket to 62 miles per hour in just 3.9 seconds. For reference, the conventionally powered SLS AMG GT puts out 583 hp, but can do the 0-60 sprint in 3.6 seconds.
The all-electric SLS employs a KERS system that was developed with help from the Mercedes-AMG Formula One team. A specially designed wall box charging unit has been designed that allows a customer's home to possess the same three-hour quick charge capabilities as a public station. Without the wall box, the EV supercar charges in about 20 hours.
If you can afford the €416,500 ($537,930) entry fee, throwing down the extra dough for a wall box should not be an issue. Mercedes-Benz calls the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive "the most exclusive and dynamic way to drive an electric car." With the blue chrome finish, we would also add "eye-catching," to that description. See for yourself in the accompanying gallery.

Paris: McLaren P1 is the nearly real supercar of our drive-to-race dreams
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Europe, Paris Motor Show, Design/Style, Racing, McLaren
Destined to be one of the splashier events of the 2012 Paris Motor Show, the unveiling of McLaren's newest supercar, and successor to the intimidating F1 legend, went off beautifully today. Despite being a design exercise, the P1 concept here in Paris clearly paves the path forward for McLaren, with the company's stated goal being to produce a car that is superlative both on the road and on the track.
While the stunningly orange-and-black P1 concept is not the final product, recently exposed schematic drawings from McLaren reveal that this design is probably very close to what the company is planning to put on the road in a few years. In fact, our own man-on-the-ground, Matt Davis, reported yesterday that the P1 is "97-percent final."
A close inspection of our gallery images of the P1 reveal, using human beings for scale, that the P1 is a delicately sized sports car. We're told that the new Mac will have the smallest frontal area of any car in the segment, while still delivering something like 1,300 pounds of downforce at 125 miles per hour.
Additionally, but none too surprising, the P1 will make use of all of McLaren's hardest won racing technology. The midengined car is built around a carbon fiber monocoque that also incorporates a safety cage within the roof structure - a concept that McLaren calls "Monocage." This structure also works to deliver heaps of fresh air to the engine via a roof snorkel, which is pretty rad. All of the car's body panels are made from carbon fiber, as well, to keep the P1 as light as possible.
It almost goes without saying, but we're just aching to get our hands on a test-ready version of the P1, sometime around when the car goes on sale at the end of 2013. Stay tuned.
