Video: Angry merging motorist gets clever revenge
Filed under: Etc., Safety, Videos, Humor, Russia
And in today's episode of Road Ragin' Russians we have this, one big Toyota and one little Toyota trying to occupy the same space in line. Since we know that isn't possible without the word "quantum" being involved, one of them has to give, and surprisingly, it's the big Toyota.
Yet when the Prado SUV pulls out to take another spot up the road, in most countries, that would be the end of it. Not in Russia, where this SUV driver took revenge on the little guy with a literal dirty trick.
While we don't condone road rage of any kind, it's hard not to be at least mildly impressed with the creativity employed by the SUV driver in the dashcam video below. After all, he was observant enough to notice that the sedan had its windows open...

Report: Falcon future unsure as Ford expected to cease AU manufacturing in 2016
Filed under: Sedan, Plants/Manufacturing, Ford, Australia
Ford hasn't said anything about it, but those who predict and those who do business with Ford in Australia expect The Blue Oval to cease production there as of 2016. The primary reason cited is the arrival of Euro 5 emissions standards on November 1, 2016, which are too stringent for the company's bread-and-butter Falcon sedan and Territory crossover to pass. It's been said that it would cost Ford millions to reengineer and retool, but sales of the Falcon sedan have been down for so long now that Ford announced earlier this month that 440 people would be let go from its two plants there.
In fact, Ford has slowly pulled back its local Aussie position for years, closing its Geelong engine plant in 2010 at a cost of 600 jobs, as the value of the Australian dollar, cautious consumers and tarriff reductions in the overall market have made imports tougher competition and depressed margins. It is the Falcon's troubles that are especially painful, though, causing a four-week plant idling in August and a planned production cut of 25 percent in November.
In view of Ford's moves and the company's silence on its plans, suppliers have been rewriting their business plans for a future without Ford Australia, letting go of workers and going into receivership. Ford's departure would mean the loss of 3,000 jobs directly, with more to come in the supply chain and incidental industries. Also lost should this come to be: the legendary rivalry between the Falcon and General Motors' Holden Commodore, not to mention that between Ford Performance Vehicles (the FPV GT from 2008 is pictured above) and Holden Special Vehicles.
The front- and all-wheel-drive Ford Taurus range is expected to replace the rear-wheel drive Falcon, and as as-yet-unnamed crossover would fill in for the Territory. Ford has had a manufacturing base Down Under since 1925 - leaving the country would mean only General Motors and Toyota would remain as domestic producers.

Who knew exhaust manifolds make great iPhone docks?
Filed under: Motorsports, Technology, Toys/Games, Design/Style
The era of engine-as-art has been over for quite some time, done in by computers, both the ones controlling our cars as well as those used to design them. But if popping the hood today reveals only a giant slab of ugly black plastic - or worse, a tangled mess of wiring and piping that looks like it was assembled by kindergarteners rather than engineers - thankfully there are still plenty of artistes outside the auto industry who appreciate and celebrate the beauty of internal combustion.
We're talking about people like Matteo Panini and Mirco Pecorari, Modenese partners in iXoost, a company that's building beautiful audio systems out of Formula One exhaust manifolds. Their iPhone/iPod docking system comes in 8-, 10-, and 12-cylinder models, and features 420 watts of power driving either six or nine separate speakers. An iXoost will set you back between €5,000-€8,000 (roughly $6,100-$9.800), which is a lot for a docking system, but chump change in the audiophile world. We'd be happy if it sounds even half as good as it looks.

Auctions: Plymouth XNR concept parks on the auction block [w/video]
Filed under: Convertible, Videos, Chrysler, Specialty, AB-Post
The 1960 Plymouth XNR will cross the block next month at the RM Auction in Monterey, Calif.
The one-of-a-kind sports car was penned by Chrysler design guru Virgil Exner, who always hoped Chrysler would include a roadster in its lineup. The XNR featured a powerful six-cylinder engine that pumped out 250 horses and gave the XNR a top of speed of 150 mph.
Ultimately, the project never got the green light, and the XNR was shipped back to Carrozzeria Ghia in Italy, where it was built.
From there, the car's story gets more interesting. A series of owners bought it in the '60s, and it wound up in the Shah of Iran's garage. It was sold again before it disappeared. In the early 1980s, car collector Karim Edde discovered the XNR in Beirut, Lebanon, hidden away in an underground garage. He bought the car and shuffled it around safe houses as the civil war erupted around him.
Twenty years later, Edde had the XNR fully restored. Since it's a concept, there were no spare parts and whatever could not be repaired was fabricated. RM Auctions has not suggested a price the XNR will go for, but we hope its next owner continues the car's legacy.
You can watch Chrysler engineers test the XNR at the company's proving grounds in the video below.

Global Marketing Chief Joel Ewanick leaves GM
General Motors Global Marketing Chief Joel Ewanick is no longer with the company. A press release issued by GM states that Ewanick had "elected to resign immediately," while a report by Automotive News claims he was dismissed, with GM spokesman Greg Martin commenting, "He failed to meet the expectations the company has of an employee." With no further elaboration, it's impossible to say what circumstances led to Ewanick's abrupt departure, but his rather short two-year tenure at the company is at an end regardless. His interim replacement is Alan Bately, current vice president, U.S. Sales and Service.
Ewanick, 52, was hired by General Motors as U.S. Marketing Chief in May 2010 and named Global Marketing Chief, a new position, in December 2010. Previously he did a short stint as the head of marketing at Nissan North America, but was best known for his work before that at Hyundai Motor America.
Ewanick might be remembered most for the GM's decision to pull its advertising dollars from Facebook, citing the social network's ineffectiveness shortly before its initial public offering of stock. He also announced that GM would not be advertising in next year's Super Bowl and was the man in charge when Chevrolet unveiled its controversial "Chevy Runs Deep" campaign.
Other decisions made by Ewanick may have a more lasting, if less visible, effect on General Motors. For instance, Ewanick led a recent effort to consolidate GM's creative marketing and advertising agencies, a move that has been estimated to save the company $2 billion over five years. In the case of Chevrolet, the brand transferred all of its business from dozens of agencies around the world to one newly created joint venture called Commonwealth of Detroit that located itself in the city of Detroit, bringing with it new talent and 280 new jobs.

Report: France unveils green incentive to rescue auto industry
Filed under: Hybrid, Europe, Government/Legal, Plants/Manufacturing, Peugeot, Citroën, Electric
PSA Peugeot Citroën and the French goverment have been negotiating how to repair the company's business position without ruining the new government's promises to the electorate. At last count, Peugeot wants to send 14,000 workers home for good, close a factory in Aulnay, and trim some of its 25% overcapacity. The automaker desperately wants to sell more cars to help it stop losing €200 million ($246M U.S.) per month. The government has already nixed the most drastic plans, but it needs to keep Peugeot from drowning at the same time as doing so saves jobs, encourages domestic car sales, and balances a nasty state budget. In addition, any maneuver needs to keep the EU's competition watchdog from intervening.
Dow Jones reports that the solution involves increasing cash incentives for EV and hybrid purchases and raising taxes on "high emission vehicles." France already provides a €5,000 subsidy for EVs and €2,000 for hybrids, but those will see a €2,000 bump to €7,000 and €4,000, respectively. The CO2 output or engine displacement that would qualify a vehicle as "high emission" isn't stated. Supplemental and longer-term plans include asking the EU to examine a free-trade agreement with South Korea that France says has resulted in a glut of South Korean cars, and providing €600 million in lifelines to smaller, struggling automaker suppliers.
From our perspective, the measures look like more of the same largely-useless pussyfooting that has kept Europe staring at the economic apocalypse for more than two years. In a New York Times article about Europe's "day of reckoning," Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said, "I've never seen it this bad. All the unresolved issues that have been plaguing the industry for a number of years have all come forward."
Austerity measures on top of the general European economy are keeping buyers away, and we have no idea how another €2,000 on the hood is supposed to spur enough demand for EVs and hybrids to help Peugeot and Citroën. Even if they tripled their sales numbers, they'd still be niche vehicles.
The problem right now is that in 30 days Peugeot will be another €200 million in the hole, and neither the company nor the government can allow that to continue, else they'll both be taking even bigger lumps soon enough.

Spy Shots: Kia engineers lock themselves out of Quoris prototype... in the desert
Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedan, Kia, Luxury
Locking your keys in your car is never a fun experience. You have to call the auto club or tow service, wait for them to either bring you a new key or break into your car for you. It's something that happens to everyone at least once, and then you (try to) remember never to do it again.
A team of Kia engineers putting a Quoris luxury sedan prototype through its paces in the desert have just performed the lockout test - unintentionally. As you can see from these photos from the spy shooters at KGP Photography, once locked out of the car, the entire team went to work, trying to get back into the sedan by the most high-tech means possible: screwdriver, pry bar and wire hook.
According to our intrepid spy photographers, the engineers toiled with the locks of the future Korean flagship for some time before getting the car opened - and not without a bit of embarrassment.
If only the Quoris had some sort of telematics system like OnStar from General Motors or Blue Link from sister marque Hyundai, they could have just called in and had the doors unlocked remotely. Perhaps it'll be an option?

Report: Mazda piggybacks on Ford Escape recall with 215,000 Tribute models of its own
Filed under: Recalls, Safety, Crossover, Ford, Mazda
A day after Ford issued a recall of 485,000 Escape crossovers from its 2001-2004 model years, Mazda has reportedly issued its own for the 215,000 examples of its Tribute, the Escape's mechanical twin. While it's the same engine configuration being recalled, the 3.0-liter V6 with cruise control, there is a difference in the recalls: Mazda is recalling 2002-2006 and 2008 model year Tributes, three more years of production than the Escape (the Tribute wasn't made in 2007).
The problem is a lack of clearance between the engine cover and the cruise control cable, which can prevent the driver from letting off the throttle if the cruise control is on. The situation was caused by a repair for a different recall in 2005. Mazda says the engine cover is similar enough to warrant inclusion for all years of production it has cited. It isn't known yet if Ford will expand its own recall.

Spy Shots: Long-wheelbase Range Rover in the works?
Filed under: Spy Photos, SUV, Land Rover, Luxury
The current Land Rover Range Rover is equally capable of going up mountains, going down Munich's Maximilienstrasse and going across Kenya's Masaai Mara. The next Range Rover, which we've seen plenty of spy shots of, appears set to wade into territory completely new to it: a long-wheelbase version. A set of extra-lengthy rear doors have been spotted on one of the camouflaged prototypes navigating the English midlands, the expectation being that a longer Range Rover is being developed for markets like China that crave stretched models with ample leg room in the back seats. The bigger back end will negate some of that 600-to-800-pound weight loss we've been hearing about for the next big Land Rover, but most Chinese and Middle Eastern buyers won't care. It isn't known if the extended version will come to the States, but a recent report in Automotive News suggests that if it did come, it could fit a third row of seats and become a challenger to the Mercedes GL, which is currently the best-sellling full-sized luxury utility here. And for those who'd like even more gumption than the current Range has, an article in Car says a higher-capacity V8 is being looked at "for power-crazed countries where fuel prices matter less."

Official: Toyota builds 200 million vehicles after 77 years in business
Filed under: Car Buying, Plants/Manufacturing, Toyota
Two hundred million of anything is a lot, and the point here is that Toyota has built a lot of cars. The automaker announced this week that sometime in June its 200,000,000th vehicle rolled off the assembly line.
Toyota's feat took the company 76 years and 11 months. It has been in the car business since August 1935, but it wasn't until 1972 that Toyota managed to produce its first 10 million vehicles - some 36 years that were, of course, interrupted by World War II. In the past four decades, however, Toyota has grown at a tremendous rate, with its next 190 million vehicles taking just 40 years and five months. Toyota's Corolla has been its top seller, accounting for over 39 million units worldwide.
By comparison, when General Motors celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1983, it had already built over 235 million vehicles, according to General Motors: The First 75 Years of Transportation Products by the Editors of Automobile Quarterly Magazine.

ETC: Car and Driver dissects the physics of monster trucks
Filed under: Motorsports, Performance, Truck, Off-Road
It doesn't really matter what age you are, we can all agree that monster trucks are awesome. How can you argue with a 20-foot tall tube-frame harbinger of destruction, mowing down row after row derelict cars and trucks? Every "SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!," somewhere in America, a dirt-filled arena is hosting this spectacle of high-horsepower automotive carnage.
For the more mathematically inclined, monster trucks are a also feat of engineering, sending over 10,000 pounds hurtling through the air at 30+ mph. To this end, Car and Driver has put together a little breakdown of the physics behind these beasts. For instance, a monster truck needs 1,500 horsepower, developed from a supercharged, alcohol-fueled V8 to rocket into the air at a 45-degree angle at 40 miles per hour. The likes of Bigfoot and Gravedigger reach a peak altitude of 32.5 feet, moving through the air at 32 miles per hour.
When a monster truck makes its descent, things get interesting. A direct landing can come down with the force of 25,500 pounds. That's enough to turn a Crown Victoria or Oldsmobile 88 into a doormat.
Some other fun facts: two-thirds or roughly 7,000 pounds of a monster truck is unsprung weight. In the main, that means the wheels, axles and rubber. The tires themselves are about 66 inches tall.
C/D explains that with the four-wheel steering systems on these behemoths, these trucks can maintain spins in a nearly inverted turning radius. As their speed rises, the center of gravity pushes to the outer wheels, and the truck can topple over.
Hold on to your corn dogs.

Report: Maria de Villota home from hospital, Marussia to conclude accident caused by "mistakes"
Filed under: Motorsports, Europe, Safety, Racing
Spanish Formula One driver Maria de Villota has been released from the hospital following treatment for injuries sustained from a crash with a support truck during testing early last month. Doctors at La Paz University Hospital in Madrid found de Villota hadn't suffered any neurological damage in the Marussia MR-01 crash and will not require brain surgery. Even so, physicians will continue to monitor her injuries, and the driver is expected to undergo plastic surgery in the near future to address "the serious injuries to her face." Earlier reports indicate de Villota lost an eye in the impact and she spent 17 days in the hospital following the crash.
The BBC reports it's unclear whether or not the driver will return to Formula One. The FIA, which oversees the sport, does not grant international racing licenses for five years after a driver loses an eye. Physicians say that period of time is the minimum required for the brain to grow accustomed to the loss.
Marussia, meanwhile, has said it will announce the unfortunate collision was the result of a "chain of unfortunate circumstances and mistakes" that eventually caused her helmet to strike a loading ramp on the truck. Reports indicate de Villota may have struggled to find the clutch lever as she entered the temporary pits because the steering wheel was still turned outside of its standard position. In addition, German publication Auto Und Sport has indicated de Villota may have forgotten to push the neutral button.

Video: This is what a six-rotor Wankel looks and sounds like
Filed under: Performance, Technology, Videos, Australia
Ah, the Wankel. You magnificent, high-reving feat of unorthodox engineering. Your biggest champion, Mazda, may have left you - at least for the moment - but that doesn't mean some mad mechanics can't rally you and a few friends for a high-horsepower party.
The folks over at Pulse Performance Race Engineering of New Zealand have constructed an engine made from six, count 'em, six Wankel rotors. The mere fact that this engine starts and runs is a testament to the mechanical know-how of these guys. For comparison's sake, Mazda's own Le Mans-winning 787 prototype utilized a four-rotor Wankel. Another four-rotor was constructed by BMI Racing's "Mad Mike," whose engines are worked on by Pulse Performance.
Scroll below to see the video and hear it for yourself. The engine's sound is not what you would expect from a rotary, and if we're being honest we don't find it terribly pleasant to listen to, but it's still an awfully impressive feat of engineering. We're not sure what kind of vehicle this insane powerplant will grace (we're guessing a drag car), but whatever it is, it figures to be one-of-a-kind.

Teased: Kia shows off more of its next Forte
Filed under: Budget, Sedan, Hatchback, Kia, South Korea
So far in the rollout for the 2014 Kia Forte we've had two helpings of sketches, now we get an artfully obfuscated look at the car's actual sheetmetal. Posting photos of the five-door hatch on its South Korean Facebook page (our Forte is the K3 in Kia's home market), what we can say so far is that it's got an attractive backside.
This is the budget maker's challenger to that thick slice of the market that's home to the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus, and speaking of that last car, when we look at the image above we get definite hints of it, and that's not a bad thing. Kia's recent run indicates that the 2014 Forte should come with the kinds of detailing to keep it from being a long-shot competitor in that segment, but we won't know about that until we can see the entire thing.
The company hasn't said when it will be revealed, but since it will be released in markets outside the U.S. later this year, that should be soon.
