Rendered Speculation: Lamborghini Aventador loses its lid

At long last, we've seen the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. As any fan of the golden bull should know, when it comes to guessing the next variant of Lamborghini's biggest and baddest coupe all one need do is imagine the car with about two feet of roof gone missing. Katz: Five observations from the week
Five observations from the week that was: 1. Jimmer Fredette is the clear frontrunner for national player of the year. Duke's Nolan Smith and Ohio State's Jared Sullinger can certainly end the season with higher-profile performances, but Fredette made quite a statement over the weekend. He played as complete a game in a hostile environment as any of the aforementioned have personally played in this season. Fredette was targeted throughout the game by the passionate SDSU fans as well as the Aztec defense. Yet he played with four fouls, made 3s, scored 25 points and tied a season-high with nine assists in a convincing road win at San Diego State.
Fredette has handled himself at such a high level throughout the course of this season. He has been the focus for every opposing defense, yet has answered every opportunity and has put BYU in position to be a No. 1 seed. I'm not sure either or the aforementioned players or Connecticut's Kemba Walker (who doesn't need to have as thick a skin) could handle what Fredette has to deal with on the road. If he wins this honor, it would be a testament to a player who worked his tail off throughout his career to become a star.
2. Harvard blew a chance to win the Ivy League title outright this coming weekend when it lost at Yale on Saturday. But all is not lost. The Crimson can still make history, win the Ivy League for the first time and reach the NCAA tournament for only the second time. The other time was in 1946. If Harvard wins its next two games against Penn and Princeton, then at the very least there will be a one-game playoff on a neutral site during Champ Week. The two teams would have split the season series and have one other conference loss (Harvard to Yale and Princeton to Brown).
According to the Ivy League, contingency plans for a date and site for the playoff game are being made. The likely neutral site would be at Yale in New Haven, Conn., which would fall roughly in between the two schools. The Ivy League is toying with the idea of playing the game either Thursday, Friday or Saturday of Champ Week. Princeton plays Penn on Tuesday of that week, which may prevent the title game from being played earlier than Friday.
3. Xavier has quietly put together a remarkable story by rising to the top of the Atlantic 10 yet again. Chris Mack has done a phenomenal job with a limited roster due to injuries and eligibility. He has been saved to some degree by an outstanding point guard in Tu Holloway. Still, the Musketeers are a model of consistency in the league and continued to roll with a win in a hostile environment at Dayton on Sunday. Xavier is 13-1 in the A-10 with two games to play, 22-6 overall and a lock for the NCAAs. Closing out the season against Charlotte and at Saint Louis is a mere formality. The A-10 isn't as strong this season, especially from sixth place down to 14. But X wins the games it's supposed to and then some and continues to be the benchmark for this conference.
4. Assessing Florida State and Georgetown will be a tough chore for the selection committee. FSU doesn't have its best player in Chris Singleton (fractured right ankle) for the foreseeable future. The Seminoles beat Wake Forest and Miami, but lost at Maryland without Singleton. So how will the committee judge Florida State? The r�sum� likely will put the Noles in the field, but they should be seeded much lower based on the personnel that will play in the tournament. Meanwhile, Georgetown is without arguably its most important player in guard Chris Wright. He broke a bone in his non-shooting left hand and the Hoyas are convinced he will return by the NCAA tournament. But they lost at home against Syracuse without him and were horrendous against Cincinnati after he went down early in the game. Georgetown has one game remaining (at Cincinnati) and then it’s on to the Big East tournament. Going 0-2 before Selection Sunday would not be advisable.
5. The Big East tournament won't have bubble drama. Cincinnati's win over Georgetown and Marquette's win over Connecticut may have put both teams in the NCAA tournament. If that's the case, the conference tourney may not have any bubble drama when the quarterfinals start on Thursday. It will be a slugfest, but it may not even affect seeding that much for the Big Dance. What’s also interesting is that the Big East might not have an NIT team. The division from NCAA to no postseason is a clear line at 11. The bottom five teams haven't done much to command an invitation to a postseason tournament. So the Big East teams can go to New York to slug it out, but ultimately it won't matter much in the bracketing of the NCAA tournament.

Big Penalties for Broken Spoiler on Michael Waltrip's Winning Daytona Truck

When MIchael Waltrip crossed the finish line a winner in the Camping World truck series race at Daytona International Speedway Friday night with only half a spoiler to retard his progress, you knew NASCAR wouldn't stand for that, at least to a degree.
Despite the broken spoiler (above), it was an emotional, stirring victory for Waltrip, coming as it did 10 years to the day of his first Daytona 500 victory in 2001 in the race that took the life of his car owner and friend, Dale Earnhardt.
In the announcing booth after the truck race, Michael's brother, Darrell, confidently predicted that the victory would stand, but NASCAR would fine the team for the broken piece.
Darrell Waltrip's prediction was spot on, as NASCAR levied hefty penalties for the spoiler, which "did not meet specifications in post-race inspection," the sanctioning body announced Wednesday.
"As a result, crew chief Doug Howe has been fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. Owner Billy Ballew has been penalized with the loss of 25 championship owner points," NASCAR's statement said.

Bentley isn't the only company that's been busy on the ice lately. Mazda just wrapped up a four-hour race in Åre, Sweden, that brought 20 MX-5 roadsters out on the open ice for a little fender-to-fender action.
Teams faced temperatures that dipped as low as -24 degrees Fahrenheit and stiff competition from racers from around the world. Spiked tires were standard equipment for all of the vehicles, though it's worth noting that the talent behind the wheel wasn't professional by any stretch of the imagination. Mazda invited fans and automotive journalists from a total of 26 countries to participate in the event.
While early on it looked as if a team from Australia would take home the checkered flag, a late-race spin allowed a Russian team to pull ahead and complete the most laps around the three-mile circuit within the four-hour time frame. Daytona 500 Winner Trevor Bayne Living a Dream at 20

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Flashing his dimples, and looking even younger than his 20 years, Trevor Bayne grinned broadly, laughed and fidgeted as he conducted his first news conference as the youngest Daytona 500 winner in history.
One day after celebrating his 20th birthday Bayne drove the legendary No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford to victory Sunday in NASCAR's biggest race -- sharing the honor with the team's previous Daytona 500 winning drivers, A.J. Foyt, Cale Yarborough, Tiny Lund and David Pearson. Bayne wasn't even born when Pearson claimed the Wood Brothers' last Daytona 500 trophy in 1976.
Explaining how grateful he was for the opportunity, thankful for his good fortune and appreciative of his team's efforts, the good-looking, well-spoken Bayne sounded as mature and poised behind the microphone as he was behind the steering wheel in holding off three series champions and a handful of other veterans on the last two laps of Sunday's race.
The Knoxville, Tenn., native's biggest smile, however, seemed to come when he found out that his Twitter account expanded from 6,000 followers to 16,000 by the end of the race. And, he modestly conceded, he was going to need a friend to drive his Ford truck home. Seems that while most of Bayne's competitors flew in private jets to the race, he drove his Ford F150 pickup truck from Tennessee to Florida.

It's Tony Stewart Again at Daytona in Nationwide Photo Finish

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The venerable Daytona International Speedway may as well be classified a completely new venue for the Nationwide Series this season.
The victory lane celebration, however, remains much the same.
Tony Stewart pushed by Clint Bowyer in the final feet of Saturday's DRIVE4COPD 300 to win his sixth checkered flag of the season-opener in his last seven tries. The winning margin of .007 seconds was the third closest in series history.
"We just got a great run," Stewart said. "We had a good push from Landon Cassill there at the line."
Cassill, a young driver without a full-time ride this season, finished third to take the Nationwide Series' points lead.
The path to success again for Stewart had plenty of reasons to derail this time around.

Audi R8 V10 Biturbo by MTM
Just a few months ago, we caught wind of a prototype vehicle parked outside of tuning company MTM’s headquarters in Germany. This prototype carried the name Audi R8 V10 BiTurbo and was rumored to pack crazy amounts of power underneath its capable hood. Fast forward to the present and that prototype seems to have developed into a full-fledged tuning package and is headed to the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.
MTM chose to use the 5.0L V10 engine used on their Audi RS6 Clubsport for this model as well, but the RS6’s 730hp rating still falls short of what MTM accomplished with the R8 BiTurbo. The R8 V10 BiTurbo is now capable of 777 hp and 888 NM of torque. Yep, 777 HP. With these updates, the MTM R8 will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds, from 0 to 124 in 9.37 seconds, and will hit a top speed of 217 mph.
The engine wasn’t all that was changed though. To get that shiny, mirrored look on the sports car, MTM completely removed its paint and polished it up real nice which took over 700 working hours. An adjustable rear spoiler, a front lip, and MTM Bimoto 20 inch forged rims were also added, as well as some leather on the inside of the R8.
Now that MTM has dazzled everyone with their impressive work on the R8 V10 sports car, we think it’s time to let everyone know that, in order to get this finger-lickin’, suped up Audi, customers will have to dish out $550,000. Yeah, you can pick your jaws up off the floor now.
More details will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show.

Knicks get too cavalier in Cleveland again
The Knicks lost in Cleveland for the second time this year, but there were a few noteworthy accomplishments in the game.
Our friends at the Elias Sports Bureau tell us Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups became the 2nd and 3rd Knicks to score at least 20 points in each of their first two games with the Knicks. The other player to do so - Bill Cartwright in the 1979-80 season.
And with his 31-point, 11-rebound, 5-block game, Amar'e Stoudemire became the first Knick to post 30 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks in a game since Patrick Ewing did it March 2, 1999 in Miami
Anthony missed his last seven field goal attempts from 5+ feet on Friday night against the Cavaliers and scored just eight of his 27 points in the second half. Anthony is now 7-27 (25.9 percent) from that range as a Knick. He shot 39.3 percent with the Nuggets.
Cleveland is now 2-0 vs the Knicks this season, but 9-47 vs the rest of the league.
Elsewhere in the NBA:
After seven players missed part of the shootaround in Philadelphia, the Pistons played only six players in a 110-94 loss. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, they became the fourth team since the merger - and first since November 2009 - to play six or fewer players in a game.
With his 41-point explosion, Dwyane Wade posted his 2nd 40-point game in the last five games. It was also his 32nd 40-point game of his career. Since Wade entered the league in the 2003-2004 season, only Kobe Bryant (79) and LeBron James (45) have more.
Dwyane Wade was the focal point of the Miami Heat offense on Friday against the Washington Wizards. Wade either scored or assisted on 45 of Miami's 121 points (37.2 pct). With LeBron James and Chris Bosh making just 10 field goals, and Wizards guards Nick Young and John Wall combining for 62 points, Miami needed Wade's magic, as they were +10 with Wade in the game, and minus-2 without him.
Before hitting five of his last nine shots Friday over the final three quarters, Chris Bosh went through a stretch where he missed 20 of 21 shots from the field dating back to the previous game.
Friday marked Kevin Love's 200th career NBA game (and 45th straight double-double). Only three active players had more rebounds in their first 200 career games than has Love, who has 2,301: Shaquille O'Neal (2,590), Tim Duncan (2,399) and Dwight Howard (2,307).
Also, Kobe Bryant scored 24 points for the Los Angeles Lakers Friday night taking him over the 1,500-point mark for the 11th consecutive season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that’s the longest such streak by an NBA player since Karl Malone reached that milestone in each of 12 straight seasons (1986-87 to 1997-98).

Brad Keselowski Pushes Big Brother Brian Into Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Brian Keselowski was still sitting in his race car on Daytona International Speedway's pit road well after the checkered flag when his little brother Brad leaned in for a hug and a congratulatory word. It wasn't a victory, but the Brothers Keselowski provided the unquestionable feel-good story of Thursday's Daytona 500 qualifying races.
Driving a barely-sponsored, five-year-old race car, Brian Keselowski will make his debut in the Daytona 500 Sunday, thanks to the kindest shove he ever received from the little brother he used to wrestle as a kid.
After spinning early in Thursday's Gatorade Duel qualifier, Brad Keselowski, 27, fell to the rear of the field and had to drive his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge back up through the pack.
On his way, he dropped the famous Penske Racing "Blue Deuce" in behind Brian, 29, and literally pushed -- and willed -- his big brother's wayward No. 4 Dodge forward during the second half of the race. Brian finished fifth, Brad seventh, and for the first time in their lives, they will have the opportunity to compete against one another in NASCAR's Super Bowl.
"Oh, my God,'' an emotional Brian Keselowski said after climbing from his car. "He's got to be the best pusher here. ... I've watched him push others for the past three years and to push me into the Daytona 500 today. .. ''
"I'm gonna ask Roger (Penske) to help him out with a little better motor,'' Brad Keselowski joked afterward.

Trevor Bayne Becomes Youngest Winner in Daytona 500 History

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- For all the talk of a new track surface, a different style of racing and promises of the "wildest" Daytona 500 ever, Sunday's much-anticipated NASCAR season-opener still ended up like so many of those that have preceded it -- decided in the final laps.
Making his first-ever Daytona 500 start, 20-year-old rookie Trevor Bayne held off Carl Edwards, David Gilliland and Bobby Labonte to earn the venerable Wood Brothers Racing team its fifth Daytona 500 victory and first since NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee David Pearson's win in 1976.
"Am I dreaming? Is this real? I don't even know where to go,'' a stunned Bayne exclaimed to his team on the radio as he crossed the finish line and drove his No. 21 Motorcraft Ford to victory circle, where he was too young to even drink the traditional celebratory champagne.
The race lived up to its billing, easily setting records for caution flags (16) and lead changes (74 among 22 drivers), but in the end it was a a great show of poise heading to the checkered flag that made Bayne the youngest winner of NASCAR's most prestigious trophy - one day after he celebrated his 20th birthday.
A five-car accident at the front of the field with four laps remaining in the 200-lap regulation period set up the first of two green-white-checkered overtime periods and all but eliminated several of the strongest cars, including Ryan Newman, Regan Smith and Clint Bowyer, who exchanged the lead in the closing 15 laps.
Robby Gordon's spin on the first restart sent cars scrambling, and fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88 Chevrolet was collected in the melee, setting up the final two-lap shootout among Bayne and the veterans.

MIAMI -- With the trade of Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks, the Miami Heat's longstanding rivalry with them now has some serious star power. This year has marked a resurgence for the East, and the two old foes have benefited the most by adding two superstars each to their rosters since last season.LeBron James pointed out after their latest loss to the Boston Celtics that rivalries are made in the playoffs and not the regular season. With the Knicks no longer a perennial lottery team, both teams could be headed to another memorable playoff series that would be a must-see event. For now, James was cordial when asked about the blockbuster trade before the Heat dismantled the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night.
"I know he's happy about it. I'm glad that it's over with for himself and it's always good when a friend of yours can just focus on the game," said James. "I think it's great for the NBA. The fact that the Knicks are back, the Celtics have been back for the last few years and all the other teams are trying to compete. I think it's great."
With a revamped roster also featuring veteran Chauncey Billups at the helm of an offensive attack led by an impressive frontcourt of Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire, Heat guard Dwyane Wade sounded like he'd prefer to avoid the Knicks altogether in the first round of the playoffs by finishing in the top two in the East.

Citroen C6 Noir et Blanc
Citroen will bring the C6 Noir et Blanc concept car to the Geneva Motor Show this year. This model is a more luxurious version of the C6 limousine aimed for a more exclusive clientele. If the concept actually makes it to production, it will only be offered as a limited edition model.
The concept is finished in white with chromed elements for a sportier look. It also features elegant lines, a unique rear window, enough interior room for all of the passengers. The concept’s design was inspired by the Lignage prototype which was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show back in 1999.
The concept will be further distinguished by a head-up display, lane departure warning system, xenon directional headlamps, Hydractive suspension with electronically controlled springing and damping and a rear spoiler which automatically adjusts to speed and braking.
More details will be offered on March 3rd when the concept makes its debut in Geneva.

Peugeot planning crossover wagon as new flagship?

When an automaker wants a flagship halo model, what form does it usually take? A sportscar or a luxury sedan most of the time. But Peugeot is planning neither. For its new flagship, the French automaker is reportedly going with a crossover.
Based on the existing 508 SW (pictured above), the new top-of-the-line Peugeot would follow a similar formula to the Audi A6 Allroad Quattro. That would mean taller form, with raised ride height and a proportion of fresh bodywork to differentiate it from the rest of the 508 range, which itself replaced both the 407 and 607 sedans, leaving room for the range to grow up-market.
The as-yet unnamed model would likely, according to reports, employ the company's Hybrid4 diesel-electric through-the-road all-wheel-drive powertrain that mates a 163-horsepower 2.0-liter turbodiesel with a 37-hp electric motor.

Jeff Burton Wins Second Gatorade Duel for First Victory at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Jeff Burton, with help from teammate Clint Bowyer, swept to victory in the second Gatorade Duel Thursday at Daytona International Speedway.
It was the first Speedweeks victory ever for the veteran driver, 43, from South Boston, Va.
Bowyer was second, followed by Michael Waltrip, Kyle Busch and surprising, unsponsored Brian Keselowski, who got a big push from his little brother, Brad, to become the most unlikely top-five finisher in a Sprint Cup race in quite awhile. Full results are here.
In the first Gatorade Duel, Kurt Busch captured the checkered flag.
"It's a shame two cars can't fit in here (in victory lane)," Burton said. "With the way things are going (with the two-car draft), Clint and I decided we were just going to find each other early and it worked out for both of us. For us, it was a great start (to the season)."
Waltrip's finish put him in his 25th consecutive Daytona 500. Waltrip and Brian Keselowski were the two drivers who raced their way into the 500 by virtue of their finishes in the second Duel.
"They like to put a car together at MWR (Michael Waltrip Racing) for the old man," Waltrip said. "To race in the Daytona 500 is just such a great opportunity. I'm certainly proud we have a fast car. We're going to be up in the middle of all that mess."
Bowyer said, "I don't know if there will be another rule change. It was fun out there. Obviously, you always want to win, but I probably should have made my move a little earlier."
As Burton took the checkered flag, Trevor Bayne and Jeff Gordon lost control of their two-car draft and Bayne spun into David Ragan, sending them both spinning.

KTM X-Bow finally on sale in North America

Long ago, we told you that the KTM X-Bow was coming to the United States in street-legal form. Now, the magic moment is upon us - the Audi-powered, carbon fiber X-Bow is available now as a special construction vehicle kit car through British Racing Group, LLC.
The X-Bow is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged Audi four-cylinder with direct injection, good for 240 horsepower. While 240 hp isn't exactly astronomical by anyone's standards, the X-Bow's Formula 1-style carbon fiber monocoque chassis means it'll shoot to 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds. This lightweight chassis also helps the X-Bow pull 1.5g on a skidpad if you're running track tires. When you finally manage to terrify yourself and your passenger, as you inevitably will, huge Brembo brakes will bring you to a halt from 60 mph in just 99 feet.
To get the car legal for stateside use, KTM has to import the X-Bow as a kit car, which means supplying the Audi powerplant is up to you. To get your hands on one, contact British Racing Group, where you'll get an estimated purchase price proposal from one of the customer relations specialists.

2012 BMW 650i Convertible configurator comes online

The new-for-2012 BMW 650i Convertible is still bigger and heavier than most of the competition, but there are still a whole slew of notable new features about the updated car. Designers filed off some of the more audacious curves in favor of a bit more subtlety. Power from the 650i's twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 now sits at 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque - up 40 hp and a whopping 90 lb-ft from the last-gen 6 Series - and the six-speed gearbox has been replaced with a slick eight-speed unit. All good stuff, and judging by the fact that BMW has launched the online 650i Convertible configurator, it appears this big droptop is ready for prime time.
The price tag begins at $92,375 once $875 is added for destination and the dreaded $1,000 gas guzzler tax is applied. The price only goes up from there, with packages like Driver Assistance ($3,900) and premium sound ($1,800) bringing things over the $100,000 mark. Check off all the options and you're looking at a MSRP of $110,375, or enough money for a loaded 550i and a nicely optioned Mazda Miata.
