Lamar Odom cruised into the lane on a fast break, put the ball behind his back and then bounced a finger roll off the back rim. Unfazed, he jumped to jam home the rebound. The sequence sent Lakers teammates into giggling fits while New Orleans coach Monty Williams disgustedly called a timeout. "It's funny that a play like that happens in New Orleans," Odom said.

Honda CR-Z Memorial Award Edition

Getting an award is quite an honor, but getting the title of Japanese Car of the Year is apparently something that warrants a little more than a simple thank you. The Honda CR-Z’s success on the Japanese market has led it to this prestigious award, and has led Honda to unveil a special edition to celebrate the event. Appropriately named the Memorial Award Edition, this special edition will only be available in Japan in a limited run of 1000 units. Honda sure seems excited about this title, huh?

The CR-Z Memorial Award Edition will be offered exclusively in Pearl Deep Sapphire Blue exterior paint with Dark Pewter Gray 16" wheels in a five double-spoke design. Onlookers will know exactly what this car is all about thanks to a sticker affixed on the driver’s side quarter glass that lists all of its options.

For the interior, the new CR-Z Memorial Award Edition adds a medium gray finish, sporty aluminum pedals, and a standard navigation system. Other than that, you get the standard 1.5-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder engine with 122 HP and 123 lb.-ft. of torque.

The price for the special CR-Z Memorial Award Edition is JPY 2,794,000 (or about $34,200 at the current exchange rates). So basically, customers interested in the Award model will get to spend almost twice the amount of the standard CR-Z for less upgrades than we can count on one hand. Doesn’t seem smart, does it?

Raymond Felton Playing Big, Loving Life With Knicks in NYC

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Raymond Felton hasn't exactly embraced the big city lifestyle yet -- his favorite lunch stop is still the Waffle House -- but he has fallen in love with his New York Knicks.

He may have grown up in the small town of Marion, S.C., played his college ball in Chapel Hill, N.C, then spent the first five years of his NBA career in small-market Charlotte, but there is no going back now.

After two months on the job, Felton is ready to turn his two-year contract into 12.

"I think now, I've found my home. I've found it. I'd love to spend the rest of my career in New York,'' Felton told FanHouse Wednesday after a light workout. "When this contract ends, hopefully we'll work out another one.''

While all the attention and most of the accolades for the rise of the Knicks have fallen on center Amar'e Stoudemire, it is the other free agent addition -- the mostly overlooked one -- who has been almost as key and a much bigger surprise.

Coming to New York to play for coach Mike D'Antoni has transformed Felton from an average-at-best point guard into one of the best in the league, a potential All-Star and a leader on one of the league's most pleasant surprises.

Xenatec Maybach Cruiserio coupe enters production with Saudi investment

Xenatec Maybach Crusiero coupe
Xenatec Maybach Cruiserio coupe - Click above for image gallery

Want to get your hands on a Maybach coupe? You've got two options. First would be to commission a replica of the Exelero concept car on the chassis of a Dodge Viper. That'll set you back €550,000, or about $730k at today's conversion rates. Your other choice is to have Xenatec convert a Maybach 57 S limo into a coupe for €675,000 ($894k).

We brought you initial news of the project back in May, followed by details in October. For a quick refresher, the German coachbuilder brought in Fredrik Burchhardt, designer of the original Exelero, to pen the modified shape for the coupe. The result keeps most of the saloon's mechanicals in place - including the 600+ horsepower twin-turbo V12 - only with modified bodywork, cabin and (of course) two longer doors instead of four.

Seen until now only in sketches, the Xenatec Maybach coupe has been (awkwardly) dubbed the Cruiserio, and it has just made its debut at Daimler headquarters in Stuttgart. The project is now being underwritten by a €70 million ($93M) investment from AutoKingdom of Saudi Arabia. Over the course of three years, Xenatec and AutoKingdom ambitiously anticipate building 100 examples, and say they've already got enough orders to keep them busy for the next year or so. Can't wait that long? The first example is up for sale out of Riyadh, with a price tag of just under a cool million.

A case of seriousinjuryaphobia

Matt McHale is the founder of the ESPN TrueHoop Network blog By The Horns. You can alsofollow him at Basketbawful. Follow him anywhere else and he'll file a restraining order.

All hail mighty Science! For ithas brought us many delights and wonders, such assix-pack ab implants, computers made out of recycled cardboardand aWearable Instrument Shirtthat can transforman average air guitaristinto anAir Guitar Hero.

However, Science does more than cater to ourfanciful whims. It alsoidentifies the thingsthat scare us. And based on a quick Google search, pretty much everything scares us. Anthophobia is the fear of flowers. People with Consecotaleophobia are afraid of chopsticks. Those suffering fromLutraphobia are terrified of otters. Seriously.

Oddly enough, Science hasfailed todefine a term for one of humankind's greatest and most paralyzingphobias: The fear that your favorite team's star player will suffer or may have alreadysuffereda debilitating injury.

Well, if there was such a phobia,Celtics fans are feeling it right now. In fact, they've probably been feeling it all season.

It's no secret that the return to health (and subsequent rejuvenation) of Kevin Garnett has been thespecial ingredientin Boston's magic sauce this season. KG's Player Efficiency Rating is back up in the 20s, his rebounding percentages are the highest they've been since his Minnesota days, and his Defensive Rating of 92.8 leads the league(Dwight Howard is second at 93.1 and Joakim Noah is third at 96.8).

Then there's this little statistical factoid from ESPN Stats and Information: "Data from the Elias Sports Bureau shows that the Celtics typically outscore opponents by 14.9 points-per-48 minutes when Garnett has been on the floor this season, and outscored by 3.6 points when he has been out of the game. The difference (18.5 points-per-game better) ranks third among NBA players, trailing only Nowitzki and Steve Nash."

Long story short: Garnett is absolutelycritical to the Celtics' ultimate success.

Of course, this has been the case ever since KG arrived in Boston, which is why Garnett's surgically repaired knee isa hot topic forCeltics fans everywhere. As much as they may have thrilled to some of the sweet alley-oop dunkshe's thrown down this season, I'm bettingthoughts like "OhmygodIhopehedoesn'tblowouthisknee!" have crossed a mind or two. Or thousands.

Then KGsuffered a leg injuryduring an uncontested dunk. Limped down the court. Crumpled to the floor in pain. And suddenly that nameless dread had becomereality.

Jeff Clark of CelticsBlogiskeeping a stiff upper lip.Although it's worth noting that his post title of "Don't Panic!" contains the word "Yet" in parentheses.

Anyway, Clark writes:
It is easy (very easy) to draw a line of comparison from this injury to the ones that plagued Kevin Garnett the last couple of years. Seeing him crumple to the floor without any noticeable contact with anyone else is downright terrifying. And it doesn't hurt that the team has played poorly (with or without KG) since Christmas - continuing a dreary trend. So are there any reasons for optimism? Call me an eternal optimist or blind faith follower, but I think so.

First of all, not all injuries are created equal. The early word is that it is not the knee and not a fracture as we originally worried. It is a calf muscle injury, which still has to be taken seriously (and we await the results of the MRI) but hopefully, hopefully isn't as bad.

Secondly, perhaps we can take that same history that gives us the creeps and take heart from it as well. A couple of years back when we lost Garnett (even though we didn't know we had lost him for the year yet) the rest of the team stepped up and played very well down the stretch. Don't forget we were up 3 games to 2 on the Magic that year. In addition, the team essentially took last winter off before rallying together for a run to the finals.

If the Celtics can weather this latest storm maybe they can get some guys healthy again. Rondo is close, West could be next, and Perkins is itching to get back on the court - who knows, maybe Jermaine O'Neal will make an appearance too ...what's that you say, he's playing already? Missed that. Anyway, whenever Garnett comes back, he'll hopefully have enough support to ease back into the rotation (well, KG doesn't do anything half speed, but you know what I mean).

I have to give Jeff credit. He's somehow emittingrays of sunshine despite the fact that over half of his team's 12-manroster has been or is currently injured (Kendrick Perkins, Rajon Rondo, Shaq, Jermaine O'Neal, Delonte West, Semih Erden and now Garnett). I'm sure it helps that the Celtics are 24-6.

But depending on KG's MRI results -- Doc Rivers says we'll know more later today --seriousinjuryphobia may end up defining the rest of the Celtics' season.

Garnett injures leg in Celtics' loss (AP)

Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce (34) drives on Detroit Pistons guard Ben Gordon (7) and forward Chris Wilcox (9) in the second half of an NBA basketball game in Auburn Hills, Mich., Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010. Detroit won 104-92.

Kevin Garnett threw down an emphatic dunk, then grimaced before he even landed. With that, Boston's smooth run through this NBA season came to an end. Garnett left in the first quarter with a leg injury, and the Celtics looked ragged without him in a 104-92 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

Top Gear ignites religious rage over burkas worn during Christmas special

Looks like the Top Gear trio is causing trouble again. A few months after Jeremy Clarkson was blamed for a few idiots over in the UK flipping a Reliant over on its side shortly after seeing Clarkson do it on Top Gear, the crew is back in the headlines for yet another fouled up attempt at hilarity.

Apparently a few fans of the show are up in arms about the men donning burkas on their Christmas special. Burkas are a piece of clothing worn by Muslim women that cover them completely from head to toe, with the exception of their eyes. The men wore the burkas during their Christmas special as a "disguise" so that they could travel through the city without being "recognized."

The Twitter lines simply lighted up after the scene with many people taking offense to the choice of attire. One viewer said, "This is probably the worst top gear special. Y the f*** r they wearing burkas!!?" Another added, "Top gear ? the burka joke wasn?t funny."

Still some fans came to the UK show’s defense by saying, "Why are so many people offended. It’s just a piece a clothing. The Burka is not in the Quaran at all. If people are so offended, why don’t they switch over the TV?"

In all honesty, we don’t think Top Gear intended to offend anyone. This was just their way of "blending in" so that no one would recognize them. It’s the equivalent to the men throwing on some kilts if they decided to do a show in Scotland or a cowboy hat to drive through the state of Texas. Of course, it probably wouldn’t have been so bad had Clarkson not made a comment about seeing a Muslim woman sporting a G-string under her gown a few months ago.

'Bag: On Baylor and Enes Kanter, continued

Each Wednesday, your humble college basketball hoops blogger (er, me) will respond to your questions, comments and nonsensical rants in this here Hoopsbag. To submit a query, visit this page by clicking the link under my name in the upper righthand corner of the blog. You can also e-mail me or send me your entries via Twitter. Per the usual, let's begin in video form.

Tim from Lexington, Ky., writes: Mr. Brennan, it's obvious you are biased against Kentucky. Fact: Enes Kanter wants to be a college student, the family has offered to pay back the money that is in question. Fact: Enes knows he will make money in the NBA for sure, but he wants the college experience and has done everything he could do to make sure he would be eligible. On the flip side, Cam Newton's father knowingly shopped him around to the highest bidder and now he gets to play in the national championship. Enes should be able to play too! ESPN hates UK and that is pretty obvious. Please stop hating UK because we are the elite program!

Eamonn Brennan: I wish there was a better way to communicate how much I am groaning right now. Groan. GROAN. See? Text doesn't do it justice. Because I am seriously getting my groan on over here.

This e-mail is a fantastic example of nearly every single e-mail I get from Kentucky fans about Enes Kanter, and there are lots of these e-mails. "You hate Kentucky! Enes Kanter wants to be a college student! Cam Newton's dad is evil! Why does ESPN hate Kentucky? Is it because we're so awesome?!? LOL GO BIG BLUE!!!"

Sigh. Let's try and sort this out:

1. I'm not sure why so many college hoops-related e-mailers (and not just the Kentucky fans, though they seem to do this more often than usual) assume that writers at national sites are biased for or against various programs. I won't speak for everyone writing about college hoops everywhere, of course, but we're really not. I don't know how many times this needs to be repeated. I don't care whether Enes Kanter players for Kentucky or not. If the NCAA allows him to do so, great. In fact, in a perfect world, I wish Kanter would get eligible, because he is reportedly a very good basketball player, and I really like watching really good basketball players play college basketball.

Other than that, I have no skin in the Kanter standoff. I like Kentucky's program. I think John Calipari is a very smart guy, an undeniably skilled coach and a master recruiter. I am not rooting for any outcomes, Kanter-related or otherwise, in regards to Kentucky basketball. Please stop thinking otherwise. You're making yourself angry for no good reason. Just chill out, you know?

2. Even if I was ruthlessly biased against Kentucky, and even if the whole world was out to get Big Blue Nation because it is "the elite program," or something, you, Tim, would not be qualified to say so. You are a Kentucky fan. You are, by definition, biased. There's nothing wrong with that, of course; passionate fans make college hoops great. But your Big Blue-tinted glasses make it impossible for you to judge bias. It's like people on extreme sides of the political spectrum arguing that moderate mainstream views are either liberal or conservative. You don't get to decide.

3. ESPN is not a living thing. It is incapable of expressing hate.

4. If you understand anything, understand this: It doesn't matter whether or not Enes Kanter and his family want to pay back the money he received in Turkey. This isn't a few-thousand-dollars-in-high-school situation. This is an argument over whether Kanter was paid as a professional. If he was, then his NCAA eligibility is kaput. It's really that simple.

And, per the NCAA's release Wednesday, and from everything we know about the case thus far, it's safe to say the NCAA sees a distinction between Kanter's case and Cam Newton's. Kanter received money. Newton did not. For all the various and unsavory details surrounding each case (especially Newton's; Kanter's family has done nothing wrong), that's what's going to matter. You can argue this until you're blue(er) in the face, and you'd certainly have reason to do so. But if that's the way the NCAA sees things, that's the way Kanter's eligibility case is going to go. End of story.

Did we get all that? Great. Because despite what the Hoopsbag inbox's unbalanced yield, there are like 344 other college basketball teams to talk about. So let's do that now.

Last week, after discussing Duke's debatable nonconference scheduling strategy -- in which Duke plays most of its road games at neutral court sites -- I asked Duke fans for their feelings on the matter. If you're a Dukie, does this bother you? Do you wish your team challenged itself more frequently in November and December? Or are you basically cool with this? The responses were pretty interesting:

Tom from Austin, Texas, writes: Regarding Duke and scheduling out-of-conference road games: Duke plays as many OOC road games as most of the other big-boys. Only, Duke's road games are rarely in the opposing team's road venue because when Duke comes to town the opposing team wants to get to the biggest arena available for a very important reason ... money. You can discount these games as "neutral-site games," but that is just disingenuous.

Plus, what is the real value of playing true OOC Road games anyway? Is there even a correlation between throwing your team in to the fire early and winning in March? If so, I'd love to see the study. I sincerely doubt the results would benefit the opposing viewpoint.

John from Chicago writes: As a Duke fan, I think it's very smart. In place of true road games, Duke plays NCAA tournament "simulator" games. Butler in New Jersey, Marquette/Kansas State in Kansas City, Oregon in Portland, etc. All at big arenas, and often times clustered very close together. There's also a full slate of true road games in the ACC, each of which is the opposing team's Game of the Year. So why not use your pre-ACC schedule to get ready for the NCAA environment? Makes a lot of sense to me, especially for the younger players.

Ben D. from Cambridge, Mass., writes: As a lifelong Duke fan, I just wanted to take a stab at answering your open question to Duke fans in the last mailbag. Of course as a basketball fan I would love to see Duke schedule an extremely tough schedule every year, because even if they lose, those games are fun to watch. But as a Duke fan I am happy with the way they do it now. Admittedly, it doesn't make as much sense to me to schedule difficult road games like Tom Izzo and Michigan State, and I trust Coach K. Coach K has taken teams all the way plenty of times before, and his non-conference scheduling definitely plays a large role in how his teams develop over the course of the year, and thus ultimately how his teams end up playing and who they become when tournament time rolls around. If Coach K thinks a "lame" non-conference schedule is best, then I believe him!

Butter from Durham, N.C., writes: From the perspective of a Duke guy, I think Coach K knows a little bit more about how to prepare his team and maintain his program than the average fan with an ax to grind against Duke. He probably views neutral-site games in huge venues in heavily-populated areas as more beneficial than going to smaller on-campus arenas, because of the exposure that he can sell to recruits and because most tournament games are played in large venues. But I do understand the complaints: Duke haters don't have a lot to go on right now.

Phil in Atlanta, Ga., writes: As a Duke fan, I love K's strategy because he schedules to prepare for the specific season. His nonconference games vary between competitive low majors and mid majors that play certain styles. He wants to play against some zone, some princeton style offenses and in the regional venues he wants the players to see. When the tourney visits Greensboro, he schedules a game there. He hits Madison Square Garden every year for recruiting, etc. It's smart and strategic. The only people to rip for scheduling are those who do it badly and then lose out on making the dance. If a coach's strategy doesn't work out but he doesn't complain about it then hey, it didn't work out. It doesn't work out for all but one team every year.

Brad Andrews from Plainview, Texas, writes: Can you tell me why everyone is talking about the women's UConn basketball team and their 89-game win streak but no one is talking about Wayland Baptist University 131-game win streak? I understand they are not Division 1, however that is a phenomanal win streak. Also they are the winningest womens college program in the country in any division. Can we get a mention on ESPN?

Brennan: That is indeed an impressive win streak. But since it happened in the mid-1950s, decades before the NCAA started sponsoring women's basketball, it's probably not a fair comparison. Anyway, here's your mention.

Kyle W. from Raleigh, N.C., writes: What will it take to get respect for Washington State? The Cougs are 10-2 with their only losses in close games to Butler and K-State. They also pounded Gonzaga and Baylor and Klay Thompson is averaging 22.3 PPG. What more could they possibly need?

Brennan: I don't disagree with any of what you're saying. If Washington State isn't getting "respect," it's probably primarily due to the fact that the Cougars started the season pretty far off the radar. More respect will come with more wins, which always bring more exposure. Easy enough, right?

Cavs Release Jawad Williams, Hold Audition for Roster Spot

Antoine WrightThe Cleveland Cavaliers released under-performing Jawad Williams on Monday, but they may not leave his roster spot open for long. The Cavaliers are expected soon to host NBA D-League standouts Kyle Weaver, Othyus Jeffers, Patrick Ewing Jr. and Marcus Landry along with Antoine Wright and Alonzo Gee for a workout, according to league sources.

Wright (pictured) and Gee have played in the NBA this season with the Sacramento Kings and Washington Wizards, respectively, but are currently free agents. Ewing Jr., the son of Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing, is the only player the Cavaliers are thought to be considering without previous regular-season NBA experience.

The Cavaliers, who also assigned rookie Samardo Samuels to NBA D-League affiliate Erie BayHawks earlier in the day, are apparently looking for the best available small forward regardless of specialty as all six players bring a different array of skills to the court. The Cavaliers aren't expected to immediately sign one of these players, but they should have a good idea of who they might be targeting after Monday evening's workout.

Shaq Signing Pays Off Big for Celtics

When the Boston Celtics finally made the decision last summer to add over-the-hill center Shaquille O'Neal to their delicately-balanced chemistry -- and to a roster already filled with big egos -- even they wondered privately if it could possibly work.

Adding his larger-than-life personality yet rapidly-fading skills to a team that already had been to the NBA Finals in two of the previous three years carried a huge risk, delivering a potential recipe for disaster.

It has turned out to be the best thing they ever did.

It's why the Celtics (23-5) go into Tuesday night's game at Indiana still comfortably leading the Eastern Conference, despite seeing their 14-game winning streak snapped on Christmas Day in Orlando. It was no coincidence that the streak ended when O'Neal had his worst game of the year.

Yes, he has been that key.

Steve Francis Leaves Chinese Team

Remember Steve Francis?

Well anyway, if not, that's OK. After what happened the last few weeks, he won't want anyone to remember him, especially in China.

The story goes like this:

After his NBA career and level of play spiraled downward, Francis signed with the Beijing Shougang Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Association on Dec. 14. Francis, who played with the NBA's Rockets, Knicks and Magic, a previous three-time All-Star, couldn't last more than two weeks abroad.

A day after Christmas, Francis and the Ducks have apparently decided to part ways, according to NiuBBall. The report said that the breakup was mutual.

The former NBA first-teamer signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with the Ducks. But apparently "Stevie Franchise" acted like a jerk.

He butted heads with Ducks head coach Min Lulei over his lack of playing time. Francis skipped a Saturday practice and then left the bench at halftime of Sunday's game and did not return.

Wizards Suspend Andray Blatche, JaVale McGee Following Altercation

Filed under:

The Washington Wizards suspended forward Andray Blatche and center JaVale McGee for one game each on Saturday for conduct detrimental to the team.

The suspensions stem from a Thursday night incident in which the two teammates reportedly came to blows at a Washington, D.C. club. The Washington Post reported that several witnesses saw Blatche and McGee shouting obscenities at each other outside of the Shadow Room in Northwest Washington, and two league sources told the Post that the two also exchanged punches inside the club.

"After further investigation into an incident on Thursday night, we concluded that Andray and JaVale conducted themselves in an unprofessional manner," Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said.

As a result of the suspensions, Blatche and McGee, the Wizards' starting power forward and center, respectively, will miss the team's Sunday game against the San Antonio Spurs.

Marquette guard leaves over playing time

All the way back at Big 12 media day, the assembled masses asked Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self what he thought of the apparently increasing number of players who transfer early in their college careers because of dissatisfaction with playing time. I'm paraphrasing here, but Self blamed modern society at large -- kids these days with their spoiled attitudes and short attention spans, basically -- and how that attitude spills over into a basketball culture where coaches, fans and recruiters relentlessly coddle top players.

Whether that's true or not -- and it's hard to believe this generation of teenagers is more spoiled now than they were in the past, though if I see another 10-year-old texting on his iPhone I'm going to lose my mind -- is an argument for another day. Anecdotally, at least, the Marquette Golden Eagles are feeling this trend acutely. For the second straight season, Marquette coach Buzz Williams has seen a freshman angry about playing time transfer before his team even made it to Big East play.

Last year, it was Jeronne Maymon. This year, it's guard Reggie Smith, who has started at point guard in five of the eight games in which he's played this season but has seen the majority of his minutes handed to fellow guard Junior Cadougan. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Smith failed to head back to Marquette on Christmas night, then missed a doctor's appointment and a scheduled practice with the Golden Eagles. Those absences led to a meeting with Smith and his stepfather, who informed Williams that the freshman was upset with his playing time and was seeking a transfer.

So does Williams agree with Self? Is this trend -- in so far as it's a trend -- hurting Marquette and college hoops at large? Actually, Williams seems OK with it:
"It's not concerning to me," said Williams when asked if he was concerned mid-season transfers were becoming a trend. "Forty percent of the freshmen across the country are transferring. I hate that J-May left, I hate that Reggie left. I love both those kids, I love their families.

"But both of them, in essence, wanted a larger role quicker, and I think it's difficult to transition from high school to high-major and have a distinct, concentrated role that everybody completely understands."

The transfer won't cripple Marquette by any means. Smith was averaging a mere 1.4 points per game, he wasn't shooting the ball particularly well, and Marquette still has the players Williams has preferred for the majority of the season. But it does hurt Marquette's depth, and it does cause problems for any coach. After you spend so much time recruiting and landing a player, seeing him leave this early in his career has to hurt.

Blazers beat Jazz to end road skid at 4 (AP)

The good news for the Utah Jazz is they get another shot at Portland on Thursday. The bad news is the Trail Blazers still have LaMarcus Aldridge. The 6-foot-11 Aldridge, who creates a big matchup problem for the Jazz, scored 26 points on Monday as Portland halted a four-game road losing streak with a 96-91 victory.

Mickael Pietrus 'Happy' to Be With Suns

LOS ANGELES -- Sure, Mickael Pietrus says he liked being traded to Phoenix. That's easy to say after scoring 25 points in just his second Suns game, right?

But the forward said that before Sunday's 108-103 loss to the Clippers at the Staples Center. Even though Pietrus went from an upper-seed kind of playoff team in Orlando to one that might struggle just to make the postseason, he believed it was a good move.

"I'm very happy,'' Pietrus said. "I'm in a good situation with great teammates, a great coach (Alvin Gentry), and I really enjoy it.''

Pietrus had cause then to enjoy the trade even more after shooting 9-of-14, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, against the Clippers. It was his biggest scoring game since putting up 27 on Jan. 27, 2009 against Indiana.

"Not when you have guys like Steve Nash and Grant Hill, they make things easier for you,'' Pietrus said afterward on whether he was surprised to have a big game so soon after being acquired Dec. 18. "I used to play for Don Nelson (with Golden State) so I basically know the system.''

How Heat, Magic, Knicks, Thunder won

Our video review team took a closer look at the Miami Heat's 96-80 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Here's what they found to be the statistical keys to the game:

• The Heat had success running the pick and roll against the Lakers, scoring almost a third of their points off that play without committing a turnover. The player setting the screen was the key to that succcess. The screeners were a combined 6-for-9 from the field, headed by 3-for-4 from Chris Bosh.

• Bosh got a different sort of results in this contest. Typically, he'll make one basket per game from two feet and in. In this game, he made seven shots from that close, more than double his previous best (three) with the Heat. The key to that: five offensive rebounds on Saturday.

• Miami did an excellent job at limiting the Lakers in one-on-one situations. The Lakers entered averaging almost a point-per-play for each time they ran an isolation play. They ran 14 on Saturday, matching the number they typically run in a game, but scored just eight points.

• The Lakers could not make a shot from near the basket against the Heat defense. They entered the game shooting 63 percent from the field from inside five feet, but were just 19-for-39 (49 percent) from that range Saturday.

The keys to a few of the other Christmas wins ...

• With a two-point lead and under 45 seconds remaining, the Orlando Magic turned to J.J. Redick in an isolation situation. Redick responded by hitting a step back jumper, the biggest shot in a come-from-behind win over the Boston Celtics.

How rare was this for Redick?

Entering the Celtics game, the Magic had run just six isolation plays for Redick all season. He was 0-for-4 from the field, with his prior successes (three points scored) all coming at the free throw line.

• The New York Knicks utilized Mike D'Antoni's "seven seconds or less" style of offense style very effectively in their win over the Chicago Bulls. The Knicks shot 64 percent from the field and were 7-for-12 from 3-point range on possessions lasting seven seconds or less.

The Knicks also prevented Derrick Rose from having a difference-maker sort of game on the offensive end. The Knicks blocked four of his shots in the first quarter and blocked six of his shots for the game (21.5 percent of his shots overall). Rose entered the game only having 7.1 percent of his field goal attempts blocked. The extra blocks helped contribute to a bad shooting day from in-close for Rose. He was 5-for-18 from 10 feet or closer.

• The formula for the the Oklahoma City Thunder to beat the Denver Nuggets was a simple, tried-and-true one: Get the ball to Kevin Durant.

LeBron James may have had the better day, with a triple-double against the Lakers, but Durant caught him in one regard. Durant scored 21 points in the third quarter, tied for the second-most points by anyone in any quarter for either the Thunder or Supersonics in the last 20 seasons (Ray Allen had 22 points in the fourth quarter on January 23, 2007 vs the Nuggets).

Durant's 44 points gave him 13 career games of 40 or more. His nine in the last two seasons match James and Kobe Bryant for most in the NBA.

Jay Leno examines the Bentley Mulsanne - Click above to watch video after the jump

Do you have a "Bentley Section" in your garage? You probably have an "Oil Stain Wing" and possibly a "Random Pile of Parts Vestibule" but we're willing to bet the majority of you don't have a whole portion of your garage dedicated to one specific marque. Among many things, that's what separates Jay Leno from the rest of us peons and he's also utilizing his Bentley Section to play host to a new member from the First Family of Crewe: the 2011 Bentley Mulsanne.

Leno looks the luxosedan over in the confines of his Big Dog Garage before hitting the surrounding Southern California streets, and the video is waiting for you just past the jump.

UT makes Facebook friends while recruiting

Christmas Eve marked the first day in which a Tennessee coach could engage in off-campus recruiting since the school announced self-imposed sanctions for NCAA violations Bruce Pearl and his assistants are accused of committing.

Pearl, associate head coach Tony Jones and assistant Steve Forbes remain unable to hit the recruiting trail, but the last day of Vols assistant coach Jason Shay's three-month suspension was Thursday.

While Shay hits the road and the other coaches are forced to stay on the sidelines, that certainly doesn't mean they can't use the powers of the Internet to reach recruits, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
In the absence of off-campus recruiting, Forbes and Pearl have been active communicating with players on Facebook.

"It's a good way to communicate with kids because a lot of them are on it every day," said Forbes, the primary recruiter for current UT players Scotty Hopson and Melvin Goins. "You can e-mail them on Facebook, but you can't post on their wall, and you can't (Facebook live) chat.

"We can also send them links to articles or videos."

I'm wondering if the NCAA has rules against excessive usage of the "like" button.

In any case, Pearl won't be able to engage in off-campus recruiting until Sept. 24, 2011, so recruits across the nation would be wise to be on the lookout for a famous Facebook friend hitting up their pages and sending them messages.

Curiously though, the link to Bruce Pearl's Facebook page is broken on the team's website. But so long as there are recruits out there to be had, Pearl will find a way to get in touch -- off-campus recruiting suspension or not.
