Defense wins championships

The math here makes my head hurt a little (even though it's simple, really -- I'm just that dumb) but basically an analysis of a half-century's worth of title-winners shows that being a little better on defense increases your chance of winning rings more than a similar improvement on offense.

That make sense?

The implication is that when it comes to winning titles, defense may in fact be a little more helpful than offense.

On the one hand, this amazes me. How could the stats care whether I stop you getting an extra bucket, or score an extra one myself? Isn't a two-point lead a two-point lead no matter how we got there?

On the other hand ... there are trends in how things happen, and they're worth knowing about. And Neil Paine's research linked above shows that the trend is that teams that are better on defense win titles more often.

My first guess as to why would be that offense is more volatile than defense, because it's based on shooting, which is an iffy proposition for even the best shooters in the world. What that means to me is that if your team's main thing is being able to score like crazy, and that's how you intend to win, you will still have games -- every team does -- where the ball does not go in the hoop as much as normal. Those games will be losses for you against good opponents. And no doubt they sometimes occur in the playoffs, when every game counts so much. Normal variations in shooting could doom your title chances once in a while.

On the other hand, if your team plays great defense (something based more on effort and less on luck, in my theory) then perhaps you can do what you're best at just about every game, which means you ought to have a chance to win even on those inevitable nights when you can't hit a shot.

I wonder if the evidence supports the notion that elite teams have more volatile results on offense than on defense.

In any case, what I also have seen evidence of before is that to win a title, you have to be among the very best on offense or defense, and at least above average at the other. It's rough-to-impossible to be average at either end of the floor and still win a title. So while defense may be a particular advantage to teams with title ambitions, it sure doesn't get the job done all by itself, despite the title of this post.

Unraveling the Clippers' executive name game

For a while now, many of us covering the Los Angeles Clippers have been referring to Neil Olshey as the general manager of the team.

So imagine my surprise when I learned, earlier this week, that he was the assistant general manager.

Here's how it happened.

"General manager" is a term that we probably use too loosely. Every NBA organization has someone who is referred to in that general way, but when you look at that person's business card, it often says "president of basketball operations," "senior vice president, basketball operations" or something similar.

Knowing Olshey was essentially the Clippers' GM, (he has been performing the traditional functions of a top executive since the Clippers severed ties with Mike Dunleavy in March) but realizing I didn't know his exact title, I consulted the team's official directory.

And do you know what it said?

It turns out that Olshey is designated on the ledger as "Assistant General Manager."

There are a lot of twists on the title general manager -- but assistant general manager is not one of them. That's a far different position. Top decision-makers do not have titles with the word "assistant" in them. Not to mention, assistant general managers, as a group, earn far smaller salaries than general managers do. People who plan and execute a team's draft and free agent strategy, and sit at the podium introducing new players ... those are not assistant general managers. And Olshey does all that stuff for the Clippers.

So what gives? Was this some kind of typo on the team website? Or have the Clippers been operating without a general manager since March? Perhaps the web directory hadn't been updated?

That seemed a little doubtful. Below Olshey's name you'll see head coach Vinny Del Negro followed by the Clippers' updated assistant coaching staff -- all those hires are far more recent than Dunleavy's departure.

Were the Clippers looking to hire someone to be the GM? Was this an open position? What was going on?

And how should we refer to Olshey when writing about the Clippers? Assistant general manager? Acting general manager? The Decider?

I searched through the team's official press releases from the summer, but that process didn't yield much clarity. For instance, the announcement of Randy Foye's signing refers to Olshey only as "Neil Olshey of the Los Angeles Clippers."

Strange.

I reached out to the team, too. After some evasion, they eventually said that the Clippers weren't looking for a top executive and that Olshey has been carrying out all the duties of a general manager.

What they did not explain was why he was still officially being called an assistant general manager more than five months after he assumed the role of top decision-maker. Why effectively give Olshey the job without officially giving him the title? The mind wanders to different possibilities. Did the team expect Olshey to take on the new duties at his old salary, and he balked at taking the new title without a raise? Might the Clippers -- whose lawyers are still duking it out with Dunleavy -- be skittish about paying two different people a GM's salary? Could there be some other legalistic oddity?

It was a big question with little in the way of answers.

But whatever the holdup was in consummating Olshey's role at the top of the Clippers' basketball operations organizational chart, it's apparently over. Olshey is, as of today, officially called the Clippers' Vice President of Basketball Operations, and thus the Clippers have ended one of the NBA's more peculiar little mysteries.

First Cup: Friday

Mark Kiszla of The Denver Post: "The task of receiving anywhere near market value for Carmelo Anthony in trade only figures to be more difficult with a growing perception the 6-foot-8 Denver forward is more interested in winning an Oscar than an NBA title. As a league executive told me: Anthony used to bleed basketball. But if you opened him up now and looked inside, what could be found closest to the player's heart? A love of the game? Or the desire to be a Hollywood star? As teams from New Jersey to Los Angeles respond to not-so- subtle hints from the Nuggets that the trade market for Anthony is open for bidding, it's time to ask where the cracks in the relationship between Denver and its star scorer began. Signs point to last summer, when Anthony switched representation for his business interests to Creative Artists Agency, whose more famous clients have included Derek Jeter and Julia Roberts. It should be noted that LaLa Vazquez, a former MTV personality and Anthony's wife, also joined CAA as part of the deal."
Howard Beck of The New York Times: "Landry Fields signed his rookie contract Thursday, completing a Knicks roster that is younger, deeper and more talented than any recent edition. It comes, however, with one minor asterisk. Kelenna Azubuike, who was expected to compete for a starting job, may start training camp on the sideline, because of lingering concerns over his surgically repaired left knee. With Fields signed, the Knicks’ roster is essentially set. They have 14 players with guaranteed contracts and no immediate plans to fill the final vacancy. (Center Jerome Jordan, another second-round pick, will begin his career in Serbia. The Knicks retain his rights.) A handful of players will be brought to camp on partial guarantees and perhaps compete for the 15th spot. ... The lineup will be rebuilt around the star forward Amar’e Stoudemire and point guard Raymond Felton, the Knicks’ biggest free-agent signings this summer. Gallinari, a rising star, will probably start at small forward. Everything else will be up for grabs when the Knicks open training camp Sept. 25 at their training center in Greenburgh."
Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel: "No LeBron James, no Dwyane Wade, no Kobe Bryant. But does that mean the U.S. national team has no chance in the 2010 FIBA World Championship? Head coach Mike Krzyzewski is back for another go-round with the national team after leading it to an Olympic gold medal and restoring some lost luster to USA Basketball during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. And even though this group has been dubbed a 'B' team, it still may have enough talent to give the U.S. its first world championship since 1994. Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant has emerged as the leader of a young U.S. team, and Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose has seized the starting point guard role and given indications he could be a huge factor for the team during the 2012 London Olympics. In fact, Rose's strong play led Boston guard Rajon Rondo to make a last-minute withdrawal from the squad before the final cut was made earlier this week."
Bob Cooney of the Philadelphia Daily News: "Chris Collins, who will enter his 10th season on Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski's staff, is part of the coaching group overseeing the collegiate players practicing against Iguodala and his U.S. teammates, who just happen to be coached by Krzyzewski. While Collins' main responsibility is to oversee his team's defensive play, he can't help but keep a close eye on someone who will be playing for his dad, Doug, this NBA season. 'Oh, my dad has been getting in touch with me every day asking how Andre's doing,' Collins said. 'He'll either call me, e-mail or text me. That's the way he is. He is on top of everything and very attentive to detail.' That trait is one of the reasons, if not the main reason, why the Sixers decided to hire Collins as their coach in May after firing Eddie Jordan, who led the team to a 27-55 record in his only season. Though Doug Collins just turned 59, his son doesn't see that as a red flag. 'He is just loaded with energy, and even more so when it comes to basketball,' Chris said. 'It was the right time for him to get back into coaching. He has always loved coaching. He and I have such a close relationship and he's been so helpful to me in my career. His knowledge of the game is incredibly high. His ability to relate to players is terrific, and he can teach the game as well as anyone.' "
Gary Peterson of The Oakland Tribune: "Stephen Curry's world view isn't complete. But it's coming along. 'What do you call the people here?' he asked by phone from Istanbul. 'Turkins? That's not right.' No, and we wouldn't suggest calling them Turkeys, either. 'Wait -- Turks,' he said. 'Yeah, Turks. They like us here. Except when we play Turkey.' Curry, the Warriors' soon-to-be second-year guard, has spent the summer with Team USA, which meets Croatia on Saturday in its opening game of the FIBA World Championship. Curry is the first Warriors player to make the U.S. national team since Chris Mullin in 1992. It has made for a hectic summer. Workouts began in Las Vegas last month, then moved to New York. Team USA landed in Madrid for games Saturday and Sunday, victories over Lithuania and Spain. It routed Greece in Athens on Wednesday. 'We're in a pretty good position,' Curry said. 'We're playing well. We've been able to go through some different situations. Now we can come in Saturday and keep our momentum going.' "
Mark Woods for the Detroit Free Press: "While continuing his rehabilitation from off-season ankle surgery, Ben Gordon made a whistle-stop visit across the Atlantic on Thursday to pledge his allegiance to Great Britain, vowing to play for the national team next summer. Gordon, 27, was born in London. 'I moved to New York when I was 10 months old,' he said. 'I would visit every summer when I was younger to visit my dad. But when I started to play competitively, I stopped coming, because summer's the time when you get better.' Gordon reconnected with his extended family two years ago on a journey back to the British capital. His father, Howard, has since moved to Africa, but there was a new set of relatives to meet who had only previously seen him, late at night, on the infrequent TV screenings of the NBA in a country where basketball is not a major sport -- and where he could walk down most streets unrecognized. 'I don't feel very British,' he said in Liverpool, where the Great Britain team beat Bosnia on Thursday night to qualify for next summer's European Championships. "But there are a lot of great memories. Of different chocolates and the food. I remember eating fish and chips out of newspaper. I love British chocolate. It's the best chocolate."
James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo: "NBA star Luol Deng treated Merseyside fans to a sporting masterclass as he helped Great Britain book their place at next summer’s European Championships on a dramatic night at the Echo Arena. The Chicago Bulls forward showed why he commands a salary of $12 million a year with a breathtaking haul of 38 points to end Bosnia’s stubborn resistance. Britain trailed with just 18 seconds to play but in a thrilling finish the outstanding Pops Mensah-Bonsu forced over-time and in the extra period Deng’s class shone through. Qualifying for the Europeans boosts Britain’s hopes of being handed a spot at the 2012 Olympics in London. 'I just wanted to come out tonight and be aggressive,' Deng said. 'I felt like I wasn’t getting any calls and I wanted the ref to notice. In the end I managed to get into a rhythm. The support we got here was great and we really appreciate it. Now I’m excited about playing for Britain in the finals next year. I love playing for GB and it was tough watching the Europeans last year when I was injured.' "
Nick Collins of the Telegraph: "A total of 288 players -- whose average height is about 6ft 6in -- are set to arrive in Istanbul for the opening ceremony of the international tournament today. But the sport's governing body, FIBA, said hotels in the capital had been forced to extreme lengths to accommodate the athletes for the tournament, marketed as 'a giant get-together.' The favourites for the title, the USA, are staying at the Four Seasons hotel while most teams including Iran -- who will face America in a group match on September 1 -- have taken rooms at the Marriott. Both hotels have reportedly ordered a number of extra long beds to accommodate their guests, with the Marriott ordering in more than 100 beds measuring 7 ft. Patrick Baumann, Secretary-General of FIBA, said: 'Giants of the sport need giant beds to sleep in peacefully. We'll do everything possible to ensure the best players in the world are given every comfort to help them reach peak performance.' A hotel manager added: 'These are very big boys to accommodate, and we have put in new beds and bed extensions to assist as much as we can in making their stay comfortable.' "
Paul Coro of The Arizona Republic: "Three months after a conference-finals run and a month before training camp, Steve Nash returned to find the Suns' house rearranged and a need for him to apply some feng shui concepts again. At 36, Nash has the onus to be great and galvanizing with five new Suns, a wing-loaded rotation and a dearth of size. 'I expect that from myself anyway,' Nash said after a workout. 'Whoever we march out there, I expect to lead the team and play at an extremely high level. I would expect that no matter who we had. I'll just embrace the challenge of plugging in new pieces, trying to make it work and make everyone feel good about what we're doing.' The changes began with Nash losing his third general manager since 2006. In June, Steve Kerr left to return to a TNT commentator job and more family time after failed contract talks changed his hope to return as Suns GM. 'I was sad to see him go,' said Nash, who visited Kerr this summer. 'He did a phenomenal job for us. I miss him already.' "
John McMullen of the Sports Network: "A statue honouring Scottie Pippen? My, how our hero worship has fallen. Before you start firing off the hate mail, understand I, like most NBA observers, loved Pippen's game. He was the consummate 'Robin' to the ultimate 'Batman' in Michael Jordan. He was the best 'Iceman,' M.J.'s 'Maverick' could ever ask for. But let's be honest, at the end of the day, Pippen was a sidekick. A sidekick that will be forever be displayed permanently in the United Center when the Bulls unveil a bronze statue of Pippen toward the end of the 2010-11 season. It's not Pippen's fault. In fact, the honour is probably more indicative of just how mediocre the Bulls were before and after the Jordan-era. It's not like everyone was clamoring for that Bob Love statue."
Kevin Ding of The Orange County Register: "Derek Fisher will fill in Friday as the host of 'Jim Rome is Burning' at 1:30 p.m. Pacific on ESPN ... and buddy Kobe Bryant will show up in the studio as a guest for Fisher to interview. Fisher said Bryant was a huge reason Fisher re-signed with the Lakers this offseason, so perhaps they’ll discuss that and the Lakers’ free-agent acquisitions. Or they’ll just chit-chat and entertain themselves and viewers. Brandon Jennings will also be a guest."

Masai Ujiri through David Thorpe's eyes

Toronto Raptors assistant general manager Masai Ujiri is poised to become the next general manager of the Denver Nuggets. When that becomes official, Ujiri will be the first African-born general manager in NBA history, and there will be no shortage of praise for one of the best-liked people in the NBA.

But who is Masai Ujiri?

Among those best equipped to answer that question is David Thorpe, who told me over the phone about his history with Ujiri:

In 2000, [Nigerian NBA player] Olumide Oyedeji was a rookie for the Sonics. I had worked him out for a day or two and his agents asked me if I'd watch him play and give them some analysis. I went to the Shaw Summer League in Boston, and at one of the first games this guy with a British accent and "Kid 'n Play" fade came up to me and introduced himself. That was Masai. He said he was Nigerian. He said he was here with some Nigerian friends and took me to introduce them, and he said that Olumide had told him how much help I had been to [Oyedeji], and Masai and his friends just wanted to say thanks. It was a very nice gesture. I gave him my e-mail address and never thought about it again.

In I want to say March a year and a half later, he e-mailed me. I had a hard time even remembering who it was. He was in England wrapping up his pro career -- he played in Belgium and later in England -- and was eager to do something else in basketball. He had gone to high school in Seattle, and junior college, and then North Dakota State. His mother is a doctor and his dad is a hospital administrator, and he grew up in both Nigeria and England. But he wanted a job in the states. We talked about things he might be able to do, whether coaching, or scouting.

It sounded like he had a good feel for where the good international players were playing. From Africa, and all over Europe. He knew all kinds of players, it seemed, who could help U.S. high school or college programs. I wasn't even thinking about the pros at that point.

I told him it was a few weeks until the Final Four in Atlanta. I wasn't sure I had room for him to stay with me, but if he could get there I would meet him there and introduce him to everyone I could. He said it was no problem, he could stay with friends. I gave him my cell phone number and we agreed to meet on some street corner.

When he walked up he had a shaved head, he looked pretty different, but he has a great charming smile that I recognized right away. We went to dinner with [Florida State coaches] Leonard Hamilton and Stan Jones. Within minutes he and Leonard Hamilton were good friends. We met all kinds of people all weekend. You know how people talk about videos spreading virally on the Internet? Masai spread virally that weekend. By the time Sunday rolled around, he had meetings set up with all kinds of coaches. People I had never met. Everyone wanted him to help them find good players at every level.

That summer he visited me in Florida. He stayed at our house much of the time. He had no cell phone, no computer, but I gave him my cell whenever he needed it, and my local library had Internet access and Masai spent time there as well.

I was working out players like Udonis Haslem, who was preparing for his rookie year, as well as Kevin Martin, who was a rising sophomore. Masai watched most of our workouts each morning, and played pickup with them every afternoon, and I just tried to immerse him into as much American basketball culture as I could.

Many of his players came to the U.S. Benjamin Eze -- they call him "the helicopter" -- is a high-level European player. Uche Nsonwu-Amadi played at Wyoming. They came to train with me because of Masai.

They rented an apartment right by my house. That summer Uche got one workout, with the Magic, who are nearby, so he could drive. I wanted Masai to go with him to the workout, and he did. When he came back, he said that he had hung out with Doc Rivers and John Gabriel, and they got along well.

We made a document on my computer called "Masai's Sphere of Influence" and basically it made the point that he knew people all over Europe, and could travel for the Magic as a scout without costing them much at all. He needed some airfare, some train tickets ... but he could stay with friends all over. He had friends everywhere.

And that's what he did. Starting in the fall of 2002, he was a Magic scout.

NBA scouts kind of do one of two things. They either go by themselves and work alone, or go where everybody else is and meet all the other scouts and basketball people. Masai did the latter. He met everybody. He became friends with everybody. After a couple of years, Denver came calling [and made him a scout]. Then he got a real job. No more staying with friends. That was the last time I ever helped him get a job. By the time Toronto wanted to hire him, he was far beyond needing my help.

He has always been a valuable guy in the eyes of NBA GMs because he knows how to find good players the rest of the league does not know about.

For instance, [Raptors draftee] Solomon Alabi came from the big man camp Masai holds every summer in Nigeria. He has also been a huge part of "Basketball Without Borders."

He always wanted to be a GM, and he always thought he'd be the second African-born GM, after [former Mavericks executive and current NBA Africa executive] Amadou Fall. This Denver job is one some other people have turned down or shied away from for various reasons. But Masai has always had that ambition.

One value he definitely brings is that he knows everybody and has no enemies. That's how deals get done in the NBA. He's not out late clowning around. He's very classy. He values character. And I'd bet that one of the biggest things he brings to the Nuggets right now comes in how the team relates to Carmelo Anthony. It's interesting that the two finalists for that job -- David Griffin and Masai -- are both from teams that just lost stars in free agency. Going through that is a great learning experience, with tremendous lessons for how to handle the biggest challenge facing the Nuggets in the year ahead. I'm sure Masai will have a very smart approach to convincing Carmelo to stay. He'll be really good at that.

Luol Deng goes home

"I've never been in a place where I've walked in the street and actually feel home, where I don't feel like a refugee." Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng says.

It's been two decades since Bull forward Luol Deng fled worn-torn southern Sudan, where he was born. Two million people have died, as the region was brutalized by government-sanctioned forces. In January, southern Sudan will vote on a referendum to secede from Sudan and become an independent nation.

Deng recently visited his native land for the first time in 20 years. The BBC documented Deng's trip, and produced a report you can watch on BBC World News America on Wednesday at 7p ET on BBC America. An audio slideshow of the journey can be seen here.

The Hubie Brown archive

The reference points of youth always hold a familiar appeal, and that's particularly true for sports fans. For instance, the starting lineups you recall most easily probably belong to the teams you followed most passionately as a kid. When I first discovered the NBA, Hubie Brown was the head coach of my hometown team, the Atlanta Hawks. The name "Hubie" is like catnip to a 7-year-old kid, and was bestowed upon a large stuffed gorilla who presided over the far corner of my bedroom.

At the time, I had no means to measure Brown's talents as a coach, or even appreciate that he led a team anchored by Dan Roundfield to a Central Division title on the strength of its gritty defense -- beating a far more talented Milwaukee Bucks team coached by Don Nelson. In the spring of 1981, when I read in the Atlanta Constitution that the Hawks had dismissed Brown, my father's explanation was my first understanding of what it meant for a person to be "fired."

I lost track of Brown for a few years, but was reintroduced in the late 1980s when CBS hired him as its lead NBA color commentator. Now as a teenager, I was eager to learn more about the pro game and Brown's insights fed that appetite well into the 1990s after he moved over to TNT.

Several months ago, I was culling YouTube for old broadcasts featuring Brown's commentary and stumbled across a treasure trove of instructional video clips. The segment below, "Setting Screens and Reading the Defense," is my favorite:

There are a hundred little things in this clip that make you smile -- the synth music, Brown's New Jersey cadence, the occasionally awkward cross-signals between Brown and his aides, Brown's insistence that "you have to have a philosophy" when you set a screen. There's plenty of unintentional comedy, but what's most entertaining about the clip is the amount of love Brown exudes for the game.

It's an affection that's present in his broadcasts, and one that can often be mistaken for minutiae. Whether it's an ABC Sunday matinee or an instructional video, Brown is engaged in a constant dialogue with the game. He'll pose a question ("You say why did he curl?"), then breeze into the answer ("He curled because the defender followed him."). Brown doesn't deliver a traditional story the way Vin Scully does, but he's sharing in a classical sense -- he's telling you secrets.
