Report: Cadillac may be working on not one, not two, but several new flagship models

Cadillac Ciel concept - in motion - front three-quarter view

Following the rollout of the 2013 ATS and XTS, Cadillac is not content to rest on its crest-and-laurels. According to a report by TheDetroitBureau.com, the two models are merely the first volley in a larger onslaught of new models.

Though Cadillac doesn't aim to take on the German competitors "car-for-car," it's looking to aggressively expand its lineup. According to Cadillac marketing executive Don Butler, "These are fun, happy times at Cadillac... we're expanding and elevating the brand."

According to Butler, the ATS will be followed by "ten new models in the next three years." In addition to a replacement for the Escalade SUV and the CTS range moving up the ladder to better compete with the BMW 5 Series, word is there will be a compact crossover on the way to slot under the SRX. The new CUV would take on the likes of the X1 and Audi Q3. So while Cadillac says it doesn't intend to compete with the Germans directly, it certainly won't walk away from a fight in certain key market segments.

As expected, in the rollout of models will be a Cadillac version of the Chevrolet Volt, dubbed the ELR. It will be joined by perhaps more than one 'flagship' model. The redesigned Escalade will represent one of those flagships, while some version of the Cadillac Ciel concept is said to be headed for production - albeit a toned-down production reality from the stunning concept you see above. This production Ciel - we're betting on a flagship sedan - will share the Omega platform with a large sedan slotted above the XTS.

The first of these vehicles could be in production as soon as 2014.

Report: BMW replacing 'is' with M Performance models

BMW 135is

Since the end of the Detroit Auto Show this year we've been getting more details on the coming line of M Performance vehicles from BMW. Taking their spots between the standard line and the true M vehicles, examples like the 2012 BMW X6 M50d and M550d xDrive (neither of which will come here) get tweaks developed by the M division under the hood, in the cabin and around the exterior, mated to traditional items like torque converter automatic transmissions instead of dual-clutch gearboxes.

Their arrival here is planned for the 2014 Detroit Auto Show starting with the M235i coupe (the coupe and convertible versions of what we know now as the 135is, pictured), and when that happens a report in Car and Driver says M Performance models will replace the "is" trim as the next-generation BMWs are being introduced. That would mean cars like the 335is become the M335i sedan and M435i coupe and convertible. Initial M flavors right now are expected to include the Z4, 1, 2, 3 and 4 Series.

The original announcement from BMW claimed that the M Performance vehicles would receive "exclusive engines," but the C/D report suggests that might not be the case. The mag also says that we'll see the M335i or M435i as soon as next year.

Video: Luxury Singapore high-rise offers elevated en suite parking

Filed under:

In-apartment parking

Big-city parking can be a challenge, but a high-rise in Singapore offers an innovative solution to the problem. The Hamilton Scotts apartment building features unique "En Suite Sky Garages" that use an elevator to deliver cars right into homeowners' premium living spaces.

Instead of the car living in an underground garage as is common in most high-rises, these apartments make owners' cars a focal point, parking them behind a glass wall off the living room, as seen above. To park, residents pull into a designated spot and then use a biometric thumb scan to send the car to the appropriate apartment.

The building's website says that it offers 54 three-bedroom, 3.5-bath apartments and two "uber luxurious penthouses." While the the site doesn't show pricing for the units, CarScoop says that the apartments list for $7.5 million while the four-car penthouse suites command $24 million.

Would you trust an automated elevator to valet your Lamborghini? Check out the video below to see how it happens.
