24 is a bad number for Yao and Rockets

HOUSTON -- The math isn’t working for the Houston Rockets. Instead of finding components that add up to victories, they are divided into two styles: up-tempo perimeter and halfcourt low-post. Then there are the fractions. The Rockets are taking advantage of Yao Ming for perhaps a quarter of the time he’s available to play, which is only a half a game.

The result is an 0-3 record.

“We have a lot of problems still,” Yao said after the Rockets lost to the Nuggets, 107-94, on Saturday night. “Defense, offense, everything. Hopefully we can do over training camp again.”

That wry sense of humor even in dark moments is the one thing that hasn’t changed about Yao. After coming back from foot surgery that kept him out the entire 2009-10 season he is slower than his previous incarnation. Smaller opponents routinely get to rebounds before he can. The Rockets’ medical staff has placed him under 24-minutes-per-game restrictions. And his teammates no longer view him as a primary option.

That explains how reserve Chase Budinger could wind up with nearly as many field goal attempts (nine) in 18 minutes as Yao (10) in 22 . It’s one of the reasons the Nuggets outscored the Rockets 35-25 in the fourth quarter. And it’s a critical issue the Rockets must resolve.

Right now they’re better as a perimeter-oriented team, taking advantage of quick point guard Aaron Brooks and prolific shooting guard Kevin Martin. But name a perimeter-oriented team that’s won a championship. This perimeter-oriented Rockets team hasn’t even won a game so far.

The Rockets did win 42 without a single minute from Yao last season, and Brooks flourished, averaging 19.6 points per game en route to winning the Most Improved Player award. Yao sounded a little guilty when he said, “They played without me one year, they played great. They played a totally different style.”

It still didn’t get them to the playoffs. And keep in mind, for all of the Rockets’ surprising ability to push the Lakers to seven games after Yao went down in the 2009 playoffs, the only road game they won in that series came with Yao on the court. If we are to take the Rockets seriously, they need to get serious about Yao.

“We sort of forgot about him in the second half,” Shane Battier said. “We need to understand how we need to work him when he is in the game.”

Eight of Yao’s 14 points came in the first half. The Rockets can go three or four possessions without hitting him in the low post. Sometimes when they do pass to him the intention is right but the method’s wrong. Rockets coach Rick Adelman doesn’t want them slowly dumping the ball in to him when he’s stationary. It allows the defense to set up around him. He wants the ball moving from one side of the court to the other, then finding Yao in motion.

It’s not that easy for the team to switch mindsets and go from launching quick, almost indefensible shots, to setting up for Yao. And it’s hard for his teammates to adjust to his presence with his playing time limited.

Yao said his foot has been “no problem” and that his routine of stretching and riding a stationary bicycle when he isn’t in the game allows him to stay loose and adjust quickly when he returns.

“It’s more difficult for coach, not for me,” Yao said.

How to divide those precious 24 minutes?

Adelman started him Saturday and played him the first 6:09. Yao played for a seven-minute stretch in the second quarter, than sat out at the beginning of the third, entering after 4 minutes. Adelman chose to keep him out for the first 7 minutes of the fourth quarter, gambling that the Rockets wouldn’t fall too far behind without him or his return wouldn’t be too disruptive. He lost.

You can tell Adelman’s already frustrated by constant questions about the minute-managing.

“I don’t have an answer for Yao’s minutes,” he said, cutting in before a reporter finished asking. “They tell me how many minutes he has to play. ...it’s only been two games. I’m trying to figure it out.

“I was trying to stay close and put him in at the end of the game. One thing, our guys, they’ve got to get used to the fact that he’s in the game and try to go to him and see what kind of presence he’d make at the other end.”

The Lakers’ Pau Gasol couldn’t help but notice the presence of the 7-foot-6 Yao on opening night.

“It’s not a guy like that in the entire world,” Gasol said.

He’s someone opponents have to account for, but the Rockets make it easier if he’s not playing and/or they’re not using him.

“I think playing only 24 minutes a game, he’s probably not going to be the first priority,” Denver coach George Karl said. “Maybe the third priority, something like that. They play with great speed. Their quickness and speed, they try to get it into every possession if they can. The Yao factor slows that down a little. I think Luis Scola’s a great secondary guy. He’s good with Yao, he’s good with Martin and Brooks.”

As if on cue, Scola had 28 points and 10 rebounds Saturday. So the Rockets do have him to serve as a bridge between their styles. But Brooks and Martin have the ball in their hands the most, and it’s still uncertain how they’ll adjust to having the big man back.

“I don’t know,” Brooks said. “I really don’t know. I don’t know. I can’t call it. I don’t know if there’s a problem or what’s going on right now. I don’t know.”

Doesn’t sound like the coach has any solutions either at the moment.

“One thing I’ve been struggling with, who’s going to be on the court when he’s on the court?” Adelman said. “We’re almost to the point where we’ve got to have certain people on the court with him to take advantage him. We’re a work in progress right now.”

The simple math has turned into complex calculus. The schedule won’t wait for them to figure it out.

Tony Stewart Says Repaved Daytona Will Feature Even Closer Racing

The repaved Daytona International Speedway might as well be a brand-new track, two-time Sprint Cup champ Tony Stewart said Thursday.

Although the project is still only about 75 percent complete, Stewart had a chance to run a production car through turns three and four before a ceremonial appearance at the 2.5-mile speedway Thursday to help paint the new start-finish line.

"I got to rip through three and four and it's not the same race track, I can promise you," Stewart said before taking a roller in hand and joining track president Joie Chitwood III to paint the first few black-and-white squares of the start-finish line. "This place is going to have a totally new look to the drivers and the teams. We're going to fill every square inch of the race track because the surface is so even now."

"tt's going to have a ton of grip," he said. "Before, you had to really work on your handling" because it was so bumpy. "Now, handling is not going to be as crucial. You're going to have more cars in a tighter pack, as wide as they can get, and literally you'll be able to use every inch of the track. And guys will be comfortable doing it, knowing how smooth this surface is now.

"It's going to allow us to go places we've not been able to go and run a lot closer width-wise."

Miami Heat Fans, Players Revel in Opening Night Festivities

MIAMI --

The Scene Outside

It's late October and thousands upon thousands of Miami fans are descending upon the town's hottest sports event. People are tailgating behind their parked cars as multiple scalpers and buyers do business. Yet this is all taking place in downtown Miami and not at Sun Life Stadium where that other prominent team does its business at this time of the year.

With a planned protest near the arena by the city's policemen and firefighters that had threatened to snarl traffic in the area fizzling out and a tipoff time a half hour later than usual, most fans with a ticket were at their seats long before the Heat's new player introduction began. Doors to the arena had opened two hours prior to game time with increased staff handling the gates, leading to a much improved and expedited process for entry. The palpable sense of collective energy from the fans hadn't been felt since the days of Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade pairing up for the franchise's first title back in 2006.

Paul's surge gets 2-0 Hornets by Nuggets (AP)

New Orleans Hornets guard Marco Belinelli (8), of Bologna, Italy, drives past Denver Nuggets center Nene (31), of Brazil, in the second half of an NBA basketball game in New Orleans, Friday, Oct. 29, 2010. The Hornets won 101-95.

Just as the Denver Nuggets began to seize the momentum, Hornets coach Monty Williams turned to his bench and told Chris Paul to check back in. That might have been the single best move New Orleans' still unbeaten rookie coach made all game. Paul scored 10 of his 18 points inside the final nine minutes and assisted on three key baskets during a decisive 13-2 run that sent the Hornets to a 101-95...

Magic Eager and Confident to Face Miami

Dwight Howard and Jameer NelsonORLANDO, Fla. -- Magic coach Stan Van Gundy can say it until his face turns blue -- like he tried to Thursday night -- but Friday's night's matchup against the Miami Heat is not just one of 82 games on the schedule.

It's not for any other team in the league this season. And it's especially not for the Magic, whose in-state proximity, whose personal distaste for the team president, and whose growing resentment continues to build, making the matchup a classic in October.

"We can make a statement (Friday),'' Magic center Dwight Howard said after his team crushed the Washington Wizards in their season opener Thursday. "They (Heat) have to match up against us.''

While the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers are rightfully bothered by being overshadowed by the Heat and their trio of stars, no one in the league has taken the praise/hate/attention in Miami as personal as the Magic, a good team mostly forgotten.

"We better get used to it,'' sighed Magic forward Rashard Lewis. "It's all anyone talks about. If ESPN is not talking about Miami, you think there's something wrong with ESPN. It just adds fuel to the fire for us.''

Wolves Suspect Blazers Withheld Knowledge of Martell Webster's Injury

Martell WebsterThe Timberwolves traded for Martell Webster back during the Great Small Forward Rush of 2010. Jest aside, Minnesota was awful on the wings and in the backcourt last season. (And also at center and, according to some, at coach and general manager.) It made sense that Wolves GM David Kahn would seek to improve his top-line talent and depth in the backcourt, and Portland made the young veteran Webster, a sharp shooter and solid defender, available in exchange for a mid-first round pick.

That is how the Blazers came to acquire Luke Babbitt and how Webster became the de facto starting small forward of the Wolves.

Only Webster isn't playing. He had surgery Monday to correct a back injury, and he'll miss the first six weeks of the season. When was his back injured? Well, that's a question that has the Timberwolves concerned and quite possibly angry.

Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports via an anonymous source that the Wolves have asked the NBA to investigate whether the Blazers traded Webster knowing that he had an injury that would require surgery. TrueHoop's Henry Abbott essentially confirmed the news in a discourse with an unnamed Wolves official. Abbott goes on to both point out that this is exactly what physical examinations are all about and that at least one unnamed NBA executive is laughing about the latest Wolves folly.

Allen Iverson Officially Agrees to Play in Turkey

Allen IversonAllen Iverson has officially agreed to a two-year, $4 million contract with Besiktas, a professional team in Turkey. Rumors of negotiations have existed for weeks, but Iverson's management confirmed a deal was in place with a release Thursday.

Iverson and Besiktas officials will hold a news conference Friday in New York.

"He's ecstatic," Iverson's manager, Gary Moore, told the Associated Press by phone. "He's very excited, very happy the people in Turkey want him, the people in Turkey appreciate what he brings to the game, and he can't wait to get over there."

Iverson, 35, heads overseas after spending 14 season in the NBA. The No. 1 overall pick in 1996 was a four-time scoring champ, winning the MVP award in 2001 and climbing to 17th on the league's all-time scoring list.

However, after bouncing between four teams in the last two years, he seems to have worn out his NBA welcome, failing to draw a single contract offer or even a training camp invitation this fall.

Aaron Goodwin Plans Action Against Arn Tellem for Poaching Al Horford

Poaching has long been a part of the agent industry, with some considering the practice of stealing clients a necessary evil to survive in the business and others deeming it deplorable.

But three months after agent Keith Glass won his courtroom bout with agent Andy Miller in a landmark decision, the case is serving as a segue into a contentious faceoff between two industry heavyweights and might spark change at the institutional level as well.

Aaron Goodwin
Aaron Goodwin, 2009
Agent Aaron Goodwin told FanHouse that he plans to file a formal complaint against top agent Arn Tellem with the NBA Players Association in the coming weeks because of how his colleague came to represent Atlanta Hawks forward Al Horford. Horford was represented by Goodwin from the time he was picked third overall out of Florida in 2007 until late June, when he changed agents days before he was eligible to begin discussing a possible extension. The union will rule on whether the case goes to arbitration.

Adding to the mix that Goodwin finds mysterious, the agent who is listed as Horford's representative by the union is B.J. Armstrong, the former player who works for Tellem and has decidedly less experience than Goodwin in dealing with such negotiations. Tellem, however, is nothing short of a top dog in their dog-eat-dog world -- listed by Hoopshype.com as the top grossing agent in the game with 38 players in all (nine All-Stars) and a combined salary total of $181,526,949 among his players.

Dikembe Mutombo: Carmelo Anthony Should Remain With Nuggets

Dikembe Mutombo Carmelo AnthonyDENVER -- Dikembe Mutombo said it wouldn't be appropriate to tell Carmelo Anthony he should stay in Denver since he now works for the NBA office.

That's OK. Mutombo will just tell the media.

"I don't think himself, (Anthony is) really ready to give his kingdom and to move to somebody else's kingdom,'' Mutombo said.

The longtime NBA center who played for the Nuggets from 1991-96 and concluded his 18-year career in 2009, was in Denver for a ceremonial first tip before the Nuggets' Wednesday night opener against Utah. Mutombo is now an NBA global ambassador and special assistant to commissioner David Stern.

Most of the talk about the Nuggets these days is whether Anthony, who has yet to sign a $64.47 million contract extension offer and who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent next summer, will end up being traded. There is fear from the Nuggets about losing Anthony after the season for nothing.

Well, Mutombo can speak from experience. After becoming a free agent in 1996, he bolted from Denver for Atlanta, leaving the Nuggets with nothing.

Reports: Nissan to repair 2.14 million vehicles in its 3rd biggest recall ever

Nissan LogoThe line at the door for the recall party is getting longer. Nissan has just showed up and it needs to bring in 2.14 million vehicles around the world, making it the automaker's third largest recall of all-time. The issue lies with a faulty ignition relay that could cause the engine to stall or fail to restart. The fix is reported to take less than 25 minutes, and involves swapping out the faulty ignition relay for a new one.

This recall affects vehicles built around the world, from August 2003 to July 2006. Japan serves up the bulk of the recalled vehicles, with 835,000 units needing to come back in. The U.S. and Canada are not far behind, recalling 762,000 cars between them. The vehicles include a wide gamut of Nissan product, from subcompacts like the Micra and Cube up to larger cars and trucks such as the Titan and Infiniti QX.

Nissan joins an ever expanding list of automakers reporting recent recalls. BMW recently took the first step in admitting they have a problem, by recalling N54-equipped vehicles. Chrysler and Volvo vehicles have had power steering issues. Some Ram trucks went out with incorrectly labeled weight and seating stickers. Honda and Toyota used a parts supplier who was dealing in faulty brake master cylinders. The list goes on and on.

2010 Aston Martin One-77 not sold out despite increased interest

If you just got a big year end bonus at that high-end job, head over to your local Aston Martin dealer and order yourself a One-77. According to the Dutch Autoblog, 22 examples of the gorgeously styled, uber-fast, and sensationally expensive machine are still for sale. One would have thought that this vehicle would have sold out by now, but it seems that only 55 of the 77 are spoken for.

While some might think that this is an issue for the company, Aston isn’t worried since the official production version of the One-77 hasn’t even been produced yet. That?s right, 55 vehicles were sold and the car hasn?t even been built. Of course, the fact that the production of this supercar has dragged out for so long may be the reason why some of those contracts have yet to be signed.

Next month, those customers that do have a solid contract for the supercar will get to drive the One-77 for the first time. We don?t doubt that everybody who drives this 750 horsepower machine will fall in love, which may be a good marketing tool to finally get rid of the remaining models.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Sees a Glimmer of Racing Sunlight

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- The legions of fans of Junior Nation rose as one on lap 285 of the Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway Sunday, waving the little green flags passed out by the race sponsor and screaming their lungs out against the din of the more than three dozen race cars circling the half-mile track here.

Their man, Dale Earnhardt Jr., had clawed his way to the front and taken the lead from Jeff Gordon during a green flag run at the midpoint of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

And he led 90 of the next 93 laps -- more than his total for the entire year before Sunday's race. Coming into Martinsville -- where Earnhardt has never won -- he had led a total of 71 laps in five races.

But after more than doubling his laps led total Sunday, Earnhardt was only partially satisfied. He faded during the long green flag run over the final 98 laps and finished seventh.

"Well, this isn't quite good enough," Earnhardt said. "We have to run way better than this. I can come in here and get a top-10 unless we have a major, major issue in the setup."

Matthew Knight Arena's logo tells a story

Matthew Knight Arena is named after Nike chairman Phil Knight's late son who died in a scuba diving accident at age 34, and the arena's new logo was done in memory of Matt's "curious spirit" as well.

When Oregon begins playing games there in January, the Nike-designed logo will be located not only on the arena's website, but also at center court.

From the news release:
The design visually represents Oregon's modern graphic language, a Japanese torii gate, while also embodying Matthew Knight’s toothy grin. A torii is a traditional Japanese gate which symbolizes an entrance to a sacred place. While building the Nike brand, Phil Knight traveled many times to Japan during Matthew's childhood.

Used in conjunction with the University’s world-renowned logo, it is the smile of Matthew Knight that cradles the "O".

As a result, the logo will represent something much greater than just an identifier for a physical structure -- it will help tell a story of an arena with a soul.

LeBron's Heat Bound to Come Up Empty

Winning basketball games doesn't dominate LeBron James's every waking moment.

That's healthy, it means he's more like us than he's given credit for. Few people are consumed by being the absolute best at what they do. Most of us who scream at athletes for not caring enough cut corners at work, aren't good at their jobs, create their own versions of LeBron's stupid decision special every year. (By the way, LeBron's new Nike ad is excellent and shows that he cares much more about his image than his summer decision-making let on. Someone astute enough to make this ad, however, should have never been dumb enough to go through with "The Decision" special in the first place).

With every waking moment, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant were consumed with winning. LeBron James isn't consumed by winning because basketball is just an extension of his brand. LeBron needs to win a championship because that's the only way he can become a sports billionaire, not because without a championship he feels unfulfilled.
The Other Side

No wonder a South Florida bar is offering free drinks the first time the Heat lose a game this year. Miami is drunk with anticipation. The rest of the NBA merely wants to throw up.
-- David Whitley on why the Miami Heat will win the NBA Championship

At times basketball has seemed like an afterthought to LeBron. And that was while he lived in Cleveland. Now that he's in Miami, a city that can distract even the most focused athletes -- check out the South Beach arrest roster if you doubt me -- LeBron is bound to lose focus, skirt the small details. It's too easy to forget about losses on South Beach. If you already recognize that basketball isn't that important in the grand scheme of things, that your life is going pretty well, Miami is not the city that reinforces the grit needed to dominate for 82 games.

Denny Hamlin Gets Serious as Chase Crunch Arrives

Making eye contact with reporters, speaking in a strong voice, gesturing for emphasis, Denny Hamlin all but declared the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship was his to lose in the hour after he won the final regular season race Sept. 11 at his home track in Richmond, Va.

His body language seemed to challenge anyone to believe differently. And five races into the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup, Hamlin is every bit on track to back up the words.

He felt he could win or contend on every single of the 10 Chase tracks and, in the past, it might have seemed more bravado than measured confidence from the NASCAR "young gun."

But this is a different Hamlin. The 2010 Hamlin model says the proper championship mindset has at last matched his considerable talent. And he is doing everything he needs to do to give four-time defending series champ Jimmie Johnson a real run for a fifth.

Johnson holds a 41-point edge over second place Hamlin entering Sunday's race at the half-mile Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, where the Tums Fast Relief 500 is being billed as mano y mano -- a heavyweight fight of sorts between Hamlin and Johnson, who have combined to win every race there in the last four years.

"People would think so, I would think so,'' Hamlin said of comparing the race to a title fight. "I feel like if it is mano y mano, we've been in a lot of green-white-checkers where we've been on the front row together, so it should be interesting.''

Izzo gives outline for Lucious suspension

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo has kept mostly mum on the topic of Korie Lucious.

Lucious was arrested in late August for driving while intoxicated. Lucious blew a .09, one-hundredth of a point above Michigan's legal limit, but because he had yet to turn 21, it didn't matter how much or how little Lucious went over the limit. Many presumed Izzo would suspend Lucious for an undetermined stretch, but Izzo hadn't moved on the matter publicly since September.

It appears, according to The Grand Rapids Press, a suspension is still the plan:
Lucious, who was charged with drunken driving in August, will miss at least two games, Izzo said. As few as one of those games could be a regular-season game, Izzo said. Basically, Lucious could be suspended from two to four games. At least one of the games will be an exhibition and one in the regular season.

The games under consideration are exhibitions Nov. 2 against Saginaw Valley State and Nov. 8 against Nebraska-Omaha and the first two regular-season games, Nov. 12 against Eastern Michigan and Nov. 16 against South Carolina.

The punishment will have some practicality mixed in; some of Izzo's decision will be based on the relative health of other Michigan State players, but the coach also said he is trying to make sure the "penalty [fits] the crime, too."

Anyway, there you go, Michigan State fans. Lucious will miss anywhere from two to four games, none of them will be particularly challenging games, and the Spartans guard should be back in time for the Maui Invitational.

Citroen prepares Golf R competitor

Citroen’s future plans includes more DS versions, including a DS Roadster based on Citroen Survolt concept. Today we have details on a new DS model that will compete with model like Audi S3, the Volkswagen Golf R and the Ford Focus ST.

The new model will be called DS4 Racing (or Sport) and is descried as a "hybridized DS4 model." This new model will combine a 1.6 liter turbocharged engine with 200 HP and with a 95 HP electric motor on the rear axle. The result for this all-wheel drive sport model is a total output of 295 HP. This new hybrid system is similar to the PSA Group’s diesel HYbrid4 set-up or perhaps it will de derived from the new front-wheel drive hybrid system PSA Group is developing with BMW.

The new DS4 Racing is expected to make its world debut sometime in 2013, after the standard DS4 will go on sale in 2011.

Kasey Kahne Released From Richard Petty Motorsports

After what became a contemptuous relationship between NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kasey Kahne and his Richard Petty Motorsports team, the entities have parted ways.

RPM announced late Wednesday it was immediately releasing Kahne, whose contract was done at the end of the season.

Aric Almirola will drive the No. 9 Budweiser Ford this weekend in Martinsville, Va. and the team is still trying to finalize a driver lineup for the rest of the year. Kahne has not commented.

Frustrations seemed to boil over Saturday night at the Charlotte Motor Speedway when Kahne's Ford experienced brake problems for the third time in recent weeks. Instead of sticking around while the team repaired the car, Kahne left the track. After the crew repaired the car, driver J.J. Yeley took over driving duties and the team said only that Kahne left because he was ill.

Early the next morning, Kahne ran in his Kasey Kahne Foundation Charity 5-Kilometer run and finished in 22 minutes -- still insisting that he had been ill the night before.

Heat Lose Mike Miller Indefinitely to Thumb Injury

Mike MillerThe Miami Heat could be without Mike Miller for several weeks after the swingman suffered a fluke injury to his shooting hand. Miller's right hand became tangled in a teammate's jersey during practice Wednesday, causing injury to his thumb.

"It was just a drill," coach Erik Spoelstra told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "He got it caught in a jersey with some contact, on a post-up."

An exact diagnosis has not been revealed, but he was scheduled to visit a specialist and undergo an MRI on Thursday.

The Miami Heat have been no stranger to injury this preseason -- most notably, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James tweaking their hamstrings. But James has already returned to the lineup, and Wade was just cleared to resume full contact drills.

Washington seeks new sponsor for arena

The awkward name that is Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion is no more after the expiration of a 10-year corporate partnership that gave BofA naming rights expired, according to the Seattle Times.

The end of the $9.1 million naming deal means the arena will go from being Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion to Edmundson Pavilion (or, fondly, Hec Ed) to ... something else.

Here's what athletic director Scott Woodward told the paper:
Woodward said the economic downturn contributed to the demise of the business relationship between Bank of America and UW.

Woodward acknowledged it would have been ideal to have had a corporate partner in place to replace Bank of America, but said "we were in no hurry to make any rash decisions.

"Our department is run well fiscally and we're prepared for contingencies," Woodward said. "The most important thing is to do it right and to pick a great corporate partner."

Whatever the place has been called, Washington has always had one of the best home-court advantages because of the Dawg Pack making all that noise.

And while the eventual new name of the arena might not seem ideal to fans given the corporate tie-in with an historic building, capacity crowds will come so long as the team keeps winning (and President Obama comes to speak).

In any case, it's the revenue raised from selling off naming rights that speaks loudest.

    Brook Lopez: Amazing Comic-Man

Nets center Brook Lopez took a look at ESPN The Magazine’s NBA preview cover and had no comment on three of the league’s biggest stars, nor the easily recognizable comic-book icons each of them held. Any sports fan could have recognized LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant, and pop culture observers would notice the presence of Captain America’s shield, the hammer of Thor and Iron Man’s metallic glove. What struck Lopez was something identifiable only to a true comic connoisseur, the distinctive drawing style that prompted Lopez to say at first glance: “Quesada.”

That would be Joe Quesada, the Marvel Comics chief creative officer and editor in chief, one of many Marvel artists who helped create comic-book images for every NBA team in this special collaboration. To Lopez he’s just as big a star as any of the players in the NBA.

Lopez is a huge (literally) comic book fan. He heads to a store in Manhattan every Wednesday to pick up the latest issues and last year made a trip to the New York Comic-Con convention, where he had a chance to meet some of his favorite comic artists.

“I’m actually a DC [Comics] guy, but I know all of these guys,” Lopez said.

Credit: Gerald Parel for ESPN The Magazine

The first image I showed him was the rendering of Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov as Galactus, and Lopez approved. He also liked Bobcats owner Michael Jordan as Nick Fury.

Those are two characters I wouldn’t have recognized on my own. But I wanted to see if he could guess the comic tie-in to the Raptors, who are so obscure that in the image even other Marvel characters such as The Thing and the Human Torch are puzzled by their presence. Lopez got it easily: “Alpha Flight.”

Credit: John Tyler Christopher for ESPN The Magazine

That was my best fastball (I had only learned of Alpha Flight’s identity in a briefing at ESPN headquarters the day before) and I couldn’t get it past him. Lopez had proven his worth as a legitimate comic maven, although I’m still trying to picture a 7-foot NBA player trying to navigate his way through Comic-Con.

“You have all those guys in costumes, it takes a little pressure off,” Lopez said.

And just so you know, there are limits to his devotion to comic books: “I haven’t worn a costume.”
